This is a book about Charles Dickens, the man who created Oliver Twist, A tale of two cities, Great Expectations, David Copperfield, and many other great works. Everyone loves reading his works, which is why Eudora Welty said,
“She read Dickens in the same spirit she would have eloped with him.”

Zbliżające się Święta Bożego Narodzenia jakoś natchnęły mnie do przesłuchania biografii Charlesa Dickensa. Jest to też jedna z ostatni pozycji z tej serii, która pozostała mi do przesłuchania.
Charles Dickens miał ciekawą biografię, był uważnym obserwatorem świata w któym żył, szczególnie ważne dla niego był relacje społeczne, sytuacja materialna oraz różnice między poszczególnymi grupami społecznymi.
Pochodził ze średnio zamożnej rodziny, jego ojciec jednak w pewnym momencie popadł w długi, nie mógł ich spłacić i w XIX wiecznej Wielkiej Brytanii za nie spłacanie długów trafiało się do więzienia. To mocno odbiło się na osobowości Charlesa Dickensa. Wyczuliło go na całe życie. Zainteresował się niesprawiedliwością społeczną, losem przeciętnych ludzi, którzy nie mieli się łatwo. O tym też pisał. W wielu książkach poruszał temat ubóstwa, bogactwa, różnic społecznych. Wiele razy w książkach pojawiały się motywy autobiograficzne. Jako dziecko musiał też podjąć się pracy fizycznej. Problematyka pracy dzieci też jest mocno wyeksponowana w jego dziełach.
Dickens sporo też podróżował. Jego książki dobrze sprzedawały się również za granicą.
To co mnie odstrasza aby sięgnąć po jakąś powieść Dickensa to ich obszerność. Ostatnimi czasy nie mam tyle siły aby sięgać po obszerne książki. Ale może jak się to zmieni, to na pewno sięgnę po Oliviera Twista lub inne znane dzieło Dickensa.

This was well written and clearly described the motivations,passions and life experiences of a truly unique writer. It provides a good background to his novels, explaining his intent and hope for each one. It was also fascinating to learn more about his personal life and various philanthropic efforts. Very much worth the money and an accomplished introduction for those wishing to know more about such an interesting man.

Nothing wrong with learning a bit more History in your busy daily life. I liked this, makes me want to read more of Dickens work. For I only think I have read one of his books, might have to read another sometime. :)

Han var ju faktiskt en ganska så omtänksam människa och brydde sig otroligt mycket om de problem som fanns i samhället under hans tid. Så pass mycket att han till och med använde sitt kändisskap för att tala med drottning Victoria om de saker han ville ändra på i samhället.

I have read almost every book by Charles Dickens, yet never read much about the author’s life. I like the concept of these books, that give you a readable, concise overview of a certain historical topic, in this case of Dickens’ life and legacy.
