Jess is everything Gabe wants. Gabe is everything Jess doesn’t know she needs. Some accidents were meant to be.
Gabe isn't a werewolf. He just plays one on TV. Jess isn't a guy magnet. She just writes teen romance. TV heartthrob Gabriel Wade has never met a party he couldn't rock, a problem he couldn't dodge, or a crowd he couldn't play. Homeschooled Jessica Thorne has never met a party she couldn't wallflower, a problem she couldn't stress over, or a crowd she couldn't escape. But they both know what it's like to lose someone . . . someone who's still here.
After a hotel escalator dumps Jess into Gabe's spotlight and he unknowingly hijacks her first kiss, he decides she'll be the perfect decoy for the paparazzi. If he can convince her to play his "girlfriend of the week." Except Jess wants nothing to do with TV's Hottest Hairball or his Hollywood ego. And by the time she figures out he isn't who she thought, it might be too late to say she needs him as much as he needs her. Even if he wants her for real.
More than just a romance, The Accidental Boyfriend is the story of what happens when two people from very different worlds are thrown together only to discover they’re both struggling to figure out who they are and how to navigate a loss they didn’t plan.
author | editor | writing coach | creator of imaginary people
Lori Freeland wrote her first story at age five. It wasn’t good. But it did leave her with the belief that everyone has a story to tell. A mood reader and YA author, she loves flavored coffee, happy endings, and is always in search of the perfect kiss. When she’s not curled up on the couch with her dog drinking too much coffee, she loves to mess with the lives of the imaginary people living inside her head.
The Accidental Boyfriend is a heartwarming YA romance that blends humour, vulnerability, and unexpected connection. From the moment Gabe and Jess collide—literally—I was hooked on their journey. Their chemistry felt so natural, and I couldn’t help but root for them the whole way through. ❤️
Jess’s anxiety was portrayed in such a realistic way, and I really appreciated how the author handled it with care. Gabe’s charm and hidden vulnerability made him the perfect balance to Jess’s quieter personality, and watching their connection grow was so cute! 💕 This book is more than just a love story – it’s about finding your own strength and letting people in, even when life doesn’t go to plan.
This book is perfect for anyone who enjoys YA contemporary romance with a little bit of heartache and a whole lot of swoon-worthy moments. 💖💖
the blurb literally said it was like better than the movies so it sold me. although this was a cute read, it didn't hit me the same way that BTTM did. the plot was kinda predictable to me. regardless, i still enjoyed the book and the characters. definitely pick this up if you're looking for a fast and cute rom-com read.
⤷ thank you to netgalley, the publisher and the author for providing me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I loved Jess and Gabe right away. I loved that they each had complexity that was supported by their backstories; they weren't just difficult for the sake of it. At some point, I worried that the likeable supporting characters wouldn't get their happy endings, but everyone got what they deserved. Such a satisfying ending!
Jess is an anxious, homeschooled romance writer. Gabe is a party-loving teen heartthrob. Their worlds collide (literally) when an escalator mishap lands Jess in Gabe’s spotlight—and he decides she’s the perfect fake girlfriend to throw off the paparazzi. She’s so not interested... until she is.
This book is all the things—cute, funny, and full of feels. The romance is slow-burn gold, Gabe is the golden retriever boy with a past, and Jess is the relatable, socially awkward queen we all love. There’s some serious family baggage and frustrating adults (seriously, Vi??), but the emotional depth keeps it from being just another fluffy read.
If you’re into fame x normal girl, grumpy x sunshine, and ugh, why do I actually like him?! vibes, this one’s for you.
Thanks NetGalley and Lori Freeland for that opportunity to read that book
This was a great YA read. Lori Freeland writes characters that are real and have depth. Her dialogue is witty and quick. I couldn’t put this book down. Stayed up until 3:45am to finish it, because I needed to know how each character fared. If you like emotion, humor, and romance, you’ll love this story.
YA, trauma-bond romance, rated PG-13 for underage drinking and sexually charged content
Jess is a 17-year-old debut author whose YA novel, based on her alcoholic mother's teen diary, has just been traditionally published. The diary describes the nightmare of living with a raging alcoholic parent, falling in love, and beginning a descent into intergenerational alcoholism. Jess has been homeschooled for the past two years, but she hopes to start college in a regular classroom within the year. Her father is a former Marine and bestselling, self-published, action-adventure author. He is so absorbed in his writing that he barely notices her.
Two years ago, Jess’s mother hit bottom with her drinking. When Jess tried to stop her from deserting her husband and Jess, her mother angrily shoved her away. Jess fell down the stairs and ended up in the hospital. Her father filed for divorce, got custody, and told Jess he took out a restraining order. She hasn’t seen or heard from her mother since.
Jess is introverted, socially awkward, friendless, and plagued by anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. At a popular writer’s conference, where she is scheduled to appear to promote her novel, she is overwhelmed by the crowds and by the crushing guilt of not having written a single word toward the second book in her contract, which is due soon.
Gabe is an 18-year-old actor who has been in the business since childhood. His mother, a famous and beloved TV star, was recently diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s in her forties. It is crucial for her to receive residential care, which costs $160,000 a year. Gabe’s TV salary is essential, not only to pay for that, but also to finance his older sister’s college tuition. Devastated by the diagnosis, Gabe spiraled, publicly acting out while inebriated, and was fired from his show. Though his agent has been fielding movie offers for years, Gabe has so far refused all of them. His mother only worked in television and was adamantly against film, a view Gabe has unquestioningly inherited from her.
Gabe encounters Jess because he is staying at the same hotel where her conference is being held. In an impulsive move to dodge the paparazzi, he kisses her and begs her to pretend to be his girlfriend. Jess is equal parts attracted by gorgeous, charismatic Gabe and horrified by the pushy paps. Afterwards, Gabe is mortified when he learns that he has stolen her very first kiss.
This entire novel inevitably has a dark tone throughout, because this is unabashedly a family melodrama. As is expected for YA romance, the story ends with an HFN. Unfortunately, it is poorly motivated. Jess, as the daughter and granddaughter of alcoholics, is dealing with situational anxiety and depression. Gabe is also depressed and self-medicates with alcohol, setting himself up for the same destructive pattern as the alcoholics in Jess's family. Neither has had therapy, nor are there any plans for therapy. Yet the narrative suggests that because they both have similar trauma in the form of mutual “mommy issues,” their broken pieces will somehow fit together and make them whole. Not all trauma bonding is created equal. In a well-written, foxhole-buddies, romantic-suspense novel, danger reveals character, builds mutual respect, and earns trust. But when mutual, pre-existing emotional trauma is used as a substitute for healthy emotional connection, as in this book, it becomes a shortcut to intimacy that skips healing and promotes unstable attachment.
This kind of psychological fallacy, which appears far too often in the “wounded protagonist” romance trope, is disturbingly unrealistic. It promotes harmful magical thinking that, "All you need is love, love. Love is all you need." In real life, wounded people are far more likely to amplify each other’s dysfunction than to heal it.
I would label this story PG-13 for several reasons. There is underage drinking to the point of drunkenness by Gabe, both publicly and privately. He swears occasionally, though not profusely. The sexual scenes are written without detailed description, but there is a lot of physically charged kissing, including scenes where Jess and Gabe are grinding against each other. Jess sets a clear boundary by insisting that Gabe should not touch her anywhere a modest tankini would cover. But though there is no explicit discussion of the mechanics of genital arousal, it is obvious what is happening. Because of this, I would not recommend the book for readers under 16.
For what it is, a purposefully melodramatic tearjerker, this book may appeal to readers who enjoy this type of story, and most will probably rate it 4 stars. Because of my personal objections described above, I rate it 2 stars. In order to be fair, I am averaging the two and settling on 3.

I’m sorry, but I could not finish this. It seemed like a huge mix of popular tropes and it just wasn’t working out for me. The writing was also very bland, and I was having a lot of trouble imagining what the author was trying to tell me. I will not be rating it on Goodreads because I couldn’t get far enough for me to personally give it a proper rating. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book.
This was such a cute and sweet novel. Even though it started off slow, I couldn’t put the book down once it got more fast paced! I thought this book was beautifully written and loved the characters. This is definitely a young adult romance read, added with some humor to it! This book made me feel happy, lighthearted and hopeful.
The Accidental Boyfriend is a book about two teenagers, a girl named Jess and a guy named Gabe. Jess is a homeschooled girl, who is a romance book writer. Gabe is an actor on television and is well known. They are both completely opposite of one another. Even though they are very different, they find out they do have things in common. They meet accidentally and become a fake boyfriend and girlfriend. Does this book come with a happy ending or will they go their separate ways?
Thank you to NetGalley and to the author Lori Freeland for this digital book in exchange for my honest review. I rate this cute young adult romance book a 4 out of 5 stars!
This was an enjoyable book, one that I think Y.A. readers would really get into. Jess is a teenage girl suddenly thrust into the spotlight due to the publication of her novel. Gabe is a tv star, known for his role in a childhood series, and for his present acting as a werewolf in a teen drama. When they meet unexpectedly, and are forced by those in authority to “fake a relationship” for publicity purposes, these two young people discover that they have many secrets and problems in common. And they are desperate to keep them private, at any cost…
* I received a digital copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.*
This great YA read will grab you from the beginning. Each chapter leaves you wanting to read on like a Netflix series. As you travel through the lives of Gabe and Jess, you understand why they are drawn to each other. If you love romance, suspense, a flowing storyline, you will definitely want to immerse yourself in this drama.

First of all, many thanks to BookSirens for the ARC of this book and also many thanks to Lori Freeland for writing such a beautiful book.
The story follows Jess (17 years old) who is a teenage romance writer who is launching her first book and due to fate (anxiety and running away from unpleasant people) she ends up on a staircase kissing Gabe Wade (18 years old) actor of one of the most popular series that exists. A situation that is a bit complicated since Gabe is not supposed to be there, much less be photographed in that place, so it occurs to him that the best way to avoid explaining himself is to have a fake girlfriend.
I honestly didn't think I would like the story so much, especially because in the synopsis they imply that everything happens in a week, but there was a phrase that convinced me that I should read this book: “But they both know what it's like to lose someone. . . "Someone who's still here." A somewhat strong quote because many times we believe that the only way for someone to leave us is for them to die but there are other ways and this is happening to both Jess and Gabe two strangers who find comfort and understanding with each other. While Jess pursues the idea of happiness in a past that cannot return Gabe searches for peace within the future that he has to hide.
And more than the story of them as main characters, we see the fight of two teenagers who really have a baggage the size of the world on their shoulders and the way in which they have survived no longer works, time is running out and they have to face each decision, promise and above all the past to be able to move forward.
Something that I did not expect is that a coming of age would destroy me so much, I did not expect to cry for each story of each character, there are so many spoilers that I would like to mention, speak badly of certain characters that I ended up hating, some that I forgive and understood the decisions and the behavior of others.
Many thanks to Lori Freeland for destroying my heart during this book and mending it at the end of it. <3

But they both know what it's like to lose someone . . . someone who's still here.”.
Jess is a teen author with her debut romance novel selling fast, however writing her second, contracted, novel is proving to be very difficult after the direct inspiration for the first wont cut it for the second. Being thrust into the limelight of a book conference with very public panels and answering questions this is not Jess's happy place with her natural introversion.
Gabe is a teen heartthrob on a popular werewolf show where he is contractually obliged to be his character in public, including dating his costar, to publicise the program. Currently he's taking a break from filming and promoting to visit family and it isn't all going as smoothly as he'd like, he can't act his way through the whole thing. In fact he needs a reason to be in town to cover his tracks and protect his family.
Jess and Gabe's world's collide when Gabe bumps into Jess at the bottom of an escalator in front of his fans and an overzealous paparazzi reporter getting dangerously close to the secret Gabe is trying to keep. Gabe does what he does best, act. Gabe kisses Jess to distract the reporter and hopefully if he can use his charm to convince her to be his fake girlfriend to take the heat off him this trip.
Fake dating, young adult, coming of age mixed with complicated family life and clashing upbringings means this story is heartfelt, detailed and full of life's ups and downs.
I flew through this sweet YA romance :) I did not expect to get as emotional as I did reading this, but the author wrote the main characters so well that I truly felt and grieved with them over the trials they were facing & I fell in love with their love story as they fell for one another.
This is a dual pov story about famous childhood actor Gabriel Wade and debut teen author Jessica Gray. Jessica finds her estranged mom’s diary for when she was her age and turns it into a bestselling book. As her book gains more popularity she finds out more about her mom and what really happened between her and her dad.
Gabriel Wade is going through similar grief as he finds himself as the head of his household at 18 when his mom is diagnosed with early onset dementia. He tries to take on all of the family responsibility while keeping the story from the press. He runs into Jess before her big book debut and figures her book launch is the perfect excuse for him to be back home and not on set of his hit tv show.
They are there for one another when they feel like they have no one else and encourage each other through facing the hard realities of their everyday lives. I cheered for them, cried with them and fell in love with them. Truly a sweet & swoon-worthy story! Thanks NetGalley & BooksGoSocial for this story in exchange for an honest review :)
Young adult is one of my favorite genres and I've read a lot of them in my lifetime but I can tell you that this did not feel like one. The characters were written like they were supposed to be mature but everything that they said and did was extremely juvenile. Gabe honestly gave me the worst ick and I'm not saying Jess is any better but Gabe is just worse out of the two. He came across as very possessive and cringey constantly calling Jess "my girl" in his head and completely ignoring all of her boundaries she had set except for the no sex part. He felt very pushy and gross. Absolutely would not recommend this one and just to cement it home, I will leave you with a quote from the book that gave me absolute whiplash: 'I dont want to start a fight. Not when I came to work things out, but she looks like she's crossed the line from starving super model to concentration camp survivor. Except she has hair.'
Thank you to Netgalley and BooksGoSocial for this eARC.
SPOILERS AHEAD This was sadly a no for me, the premise seemed good and I wanted to like it but some factors really made this hard to like as a whole. The main issue to me was all of the problematic adults, Vi being the worst of all. She was so inattentive to Jess and was only focused on herself, she supplied the underage MMC with alcohol knowing he had issues with it before, the gross misconduct with her Jess's father and encouraging her to be a harlot when it clearly all makes her uncomfortable and she's 17. The fact that she had the nerve to be hurt with Jess finally called her out on some of the nonsense she's been doing I was outraged. Vi was unprofessional in every way and should never have been her agent or anywhere near a public relations job like that when she was also making comments on the MMC who's barley 18 and his body. Jess's father was also trash considering how absentee he was and again the gross situation with Vi which made no sense to what we glimpsed from his character. I hated them both and wish they were never involved in the book, it might've been a lot better without them and any scenes they had. on Gabe's end his situation wasn't much better with the adults around him, how can he be expected to make serious decisions with the power of attorney when A. he's barely an adult, and B. isn't given all the information from other adults because they're "protecting him" it's too conflicting. Adding on to that, his sister is also being completely unreasonable, and she's actually the older one but someone can't be trusted to make serious decisions so it falls on Gabe. I really didn't like her either with her ultimatums and pushing him to drink the bottles of alcohol Vi left for him (which he hadn't touched at all) also knowing he has an issue with it. The whole thing was just an endless car crash sorry to say, which is unfortunate because the main couple parts were actually good at times; though I'm over incredibly sheltered female leads where every little thing is scandalous to them. Thank you to Netgalley for giving me an opportunity to read this book, that in no way has influenced my views and opinions on this book whatsoever.
The Accidental Boyfriend was a heartwarming YA contemporary romance.
Jess, a teenage author just about to release her debut novel falls into the arms (literally) of the one and only Gabriel who stars in the successful show The Pack (think teen wolf).
I love a meet cute and this did not disappoint. I loved the way the author brought the depth of these characters to not make them come across as just being difficult for the sake of it.
When I started reading, I expected a heartwarming romance—but what I got was so much more, and I absolutely loved it. While the story was somewhat predictable, it remained cozy and engaging throughout. The author did a terrific job of conveying emotions; I felt every single one so vividly. This book made me laugh, cry, and even feel angry (a bit too angry), which only made me love it more.
What truly sealed the deal for me was the portrayal of Jess' anxiety and Gabe's insecurities. Their struggles felt incredibly real, making them all the more relatable. Another thing I appreciated was that, despite the many conflicts, nothing felt clichéd or annoying. Another thing I liked was how the story handled multiple conflicts without feeling clichéd or overwhelming. Instead, it made the characters’ struggles feel even more real.
So, if you're a fan of opposites-attract and forced-proximity romances where he falls first and hard, this should totally be in your TBR.
Thanks NetGalley and Lori Freeland for giving me a copy of this book to read.
I binged this book. Love the main characters and the writing. Most of the adults were terrible humans, but a few of them improved, so kudos to them.
My only real quibble with this one was I felt so much secondhand embarrassment for the heroine. I had to put my reader down multiple times and collect myself for her. Poor thing. I'm glad she gets her HEA.
Hmmm. I consider myself an avid reader of YA. And this wasn't really it for me.
The timeline of the events were so confusing so me. Writing was confusing for me. Sometimes I have no idea who we were talking about. Things were resolved so quickly sometimes.
I didn't love Gabe as a character, like he was really shallow. Generally most of the characters are pretty one dimensional. And their romance was just so whirl wind. It was hard to buy into it. And I say I'm an avid reader of YA because I know they arent super serious and generally shallow, but I just couldn't get behind this book.
The second half of the book was really hard for me to read. Just tough to get through. But finished it anyway.
I didn't understand what was the real stakes or conflict of the book.
Overall, wasn't a super fun book to read. But it is relatively easy to read. So if you're looking for something light, this is it.
Thanks netgallery for the ARC. Review and thoughts are my own.
I received an advanced review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This read like a 2010s teenage celebrity relationship drama in a teen magazine, and not the good kind. I tried so hard to resonate with the characters but in the end I failed to like any one of them, particularly Gabe and Vi.
If this wasn't an ARC, I definitely would've dnfed after the non-consensual kiss Gabe unceremoniously planted on Jess's lips in the beginning. I get that it was the baseline of the story but lack of consent is not romantic.
Jess and Gabe were quite immature as a couple [and individuals]. I get that they're young - and technically they are kids - but Jess's severe lack of awareness or knowledge about certain stuff was astounding. I doubt whether their relationship makes it past age 25.
The adults in their life were quite toxic. Though I don't think every character in a book should be flawless - if that were the case then every book would be the same - but I am of the opinion that Vi should've been booted out of Jess's life. She was very toxic towards Jess and came off as self-absorbed and it's baffling that Jess's dad didn't think much of it.
These are entirely my opinions of the book and I wouldn't want to stop someone else from reading it. If you want to give it a shot, go for it.
A big thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book.
I DNFed at 8%. I tried really hard to keep reading but I could tell from the beginning that this was not for me. I’m usually pretty good at knowing at the beginning of a book if I will end up liking it. This one unfortunately did not catch my attention. Something about it made me feel like I was gonna be cringing at the romance then eating it up. I am a hopeless romantic, so it doesn’t take a lot to win me over. I won’t give up on this book and maybe pick it up in the future.
Thank you to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for this e-ARC.
The premise of this story immediately caught my interest. However, it did not deliver.
One of my main criticisms for this book is Gabriel. I found him to be borderline creepy and predatory in his interactions with Jess. He constantly ignored her boundaries and made advances on her time and time again, which clearly made her uncomfortable. I did not find him charming in the slightest.
There was also the issue of adults freely and knowingly providing underage children alcohol. I found this incredibly bizarre, unethical, and unrealistic.
There were also some issues with the writing, which I found quite distracting.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I received this arc from NetGalley and Publisher BooksGoSocial, The Accidental Boyfriend. Gabriel Wade is a child actor prodigy, his current role playing a werewolf on a tv sitcom. Jessica Thorne is an up and coming teen author, whose first book is days away from debuting. So, how exactly do these two end up in a fake dating contract? Lori Freeland writes a beautifully tragic story of the lives of these two strangers who have more in common than they think, and their journey to find themselves and love. This book will be give you all the feels. I laughed, cried, and fell in love with the characters and their stories. Beautifully written.
I really enjoyed The Accidental Boyfriend. It was fun and I couldn’t stop reading it . The details brought me back to my dating days . I don’t want to say too much about the story so I don’t give it away . Great job to the Author Lori and can’t wait to read your next book . Thank you
All Jessica Thorne wanted was a moment to collect her thoughts before the conference. Instead, she’s lip-locking with a (handsome) stranger and being ambushed by curious onlookers. After the intoxicating sensation of his lips wears off, Jess is instantly irritated by his arrogance. The guy, Gabriel Wade, is a famous Hollywood actor known for being a ladies’ man. He asks a bizarre request of Jess: be his pretend girlfriend for a week. What? Jess has never even kissed a boy (until five minutes ago), and now some Hollywood player wants to parade her around for all to see. No way! The introverted teen author already has enough on her plate—like dodging deadlines for her upcoming book and dealing with a raging case of imposter syndrome.
But there’s something about him.
Gabe needs to create a diversion to stave off the hungry paparazzi. No one can know the real reason he is in town. When he spots quirky, adorable Jess, he knows he’s found the perfect decoy—if only she’ll agree. The hello-kitty-loving, bookish beauty is unlike any girl he’s ever met—she’s unimpressed by his fame, immune to his charms, and not afraid to put him in his place. (And he finds it irresistible!)
Could Gabriel Wade be falling for his pretend girlfriend for real?
Unlike its ambiguous title, everything about this coming-of-age novel was purposefully curated—from the witty banter between characters and the absorbing storyline to the familiar feelings that channeled my inner teen and tugged at my heartstrings. Lori Freeland knew what she was doing when she crafted “The Accidental Boyfriend.” Uproariously funny rom-com meets sweet teenage romance, young adult readers will be swooning over Jess and Gabe’s complicated, pretend-turned-real relationship.
It wasn’t just intense flirting and sarcastic quips; the young adult book explored heavier themes like family dysfunction. Despite their completely different lifestyles, Jess and Gabe could agree on one thing—you can’t choose your family, nor can you erase their shameful secrets and sordid pasts. Building a wall is sometimes easier than letting people in. Shattered by her mother’s drinking and her father’s perpetual rejection, Jess protected her heart by withdrawing from the world. After grappling with his once-famous mom’s reality, Gabe tried to protect his family by hiding behind his fake Hollywood persona because it was easier than being himself. Somehow, both characters knew what the other needed and showed readers that vulnerability isn’t a weakness; sometimes, it is precisely what is necessary to evolve and overcome adversity.
In this coming-of-age novel, readers will be quickly reeled in by the giggle-inducing antics and the burgeoning romance between Gabe and Jess. Their unconventional premise added another layer of intrigue, and teen readers will find the characters’ familial plight relatable. Moreover, Lori Freeland has done an excellent job of creating flawed but lovable protagonists, and I could easily see “The Accidental Boyfriend” being adapted for the big screen.
“The Accidental Boyfriend” by Lori Freeland brings a new angle to the fake dating story, crafting a tale that keeps you hooked. The story presents POVs of Jess and Gabe as they navigate their complex lives, fall in love and get better at navigating their compex lives.
There is a lot of weight on each young protagonist’s shoulders. They are young and have had tumultuous childhoods, so they are not the best at handling situations. They accidentally come into each other’s lives and help each other with things they are missing in their own lives: love, Time, and Attention. While Jess and Gabe handle their own lives, both analyze each other’s emotions. They find comfort in each other, and it’s endearing to read.
The skillful writing supports the fantastic plot. A lot of secrets are built into the POVs, and the plot builds curiosity for the following pages of this book. Along with the depths of the characters, there are twists and turns in the plot. Writing male and female POVs with seamless transitions by one person is not easy. The perspectives are well written, so Kudos to the author. The characters hold secrets and motivations, which are portrayed well in the writing. There are multiple side characters in the story, each with their own reasons for their complex emotions. The writing could’ve easily been a miss, and it wasn’t.
Readers also get another layer of the story through snippets of books and shows at the beginning of each chapter. Just as Jess’s first book formed, readers can also see how Jess’s second book formed.
While the book excels in storytelling, there are minor areas for improvement. The grammar could’ve been written better. Additionally, POVs helped understand the protagonists better, but complete character understanding and development were lacking for the side characters. There are too many side characters for this book to have been able to explore each one better. A less awkward cover would’ve also been preferred. A picture of their kiss would be better instead of just standing at uncomfortable angles.
Overall, this book tells the story of a familiar trope reimagined with a fresh plot through the POVs of two protagonists. The well-written story with complex characters keeps you hooked and eager for the upcoming pages.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
--Edit to add-- I ended up finishing the book because I have to know how the adults horribly mess up these young people. Felt like there was alot that squeezed in there. The excuse from Donna the judgmental bitch was the weakest. Vi not being professional in so many front was also not ok. Though, I'm glad Jess' tantrum made her see what is what, and uncover the truth that she is wanted. That was very damaging to her and made her super duper whiny to a point of annoying. Sassy is one thing, but annoying is another .
For Gabe, glad that behind the facade, everyone wanted something positive, it's just the way they went about it is also messed up. Putting burden on a young person even of legal age is not fair.
The book really needed trigger warnings ahead of time. ~~~~~~~~
Rounded up from 2.5 stars.
I have to DNF around 39%. From the description it's totally up my alley, meet cute YA. Celebrity and author trope. But...
Mainly that Jess, while I understand she's a scared Bambi, at some point people treating her with authenticity should deserves some openness and therefore move the relationship along. It just felt dragged on with Jess nit-picking one thing or another to push Gabe away. Not to mention, what kind of chaperone of Vi to basically using guardian as a guise while shacking up with Jess' Dad. And how can the Dad be actually all protective, not letting his daughter drives 20 minutes in Dallas, yet doing something reckless like sleeping with Jess' agent. The whole thing was just weird.
For Gabe, he's surrounded by a lot of toxic adults that wanted him to make adult decisions but not arming him with adult information. From the dumb sister to David the attorney, to Gretchen the vulture. It was hard to read without feeling bad for him. But seeing him fighting so hard for Jess, you do want him to come out ok.
I think, while the Dallas backdrop created a very real setting, the author is trying to weave too many pieces to the characters, so it's not just hardship physically or mentally; it's not moving the story along like we need it to.
Thank you to NetGalley & BooksGoSocial for the ARC. I may go back after being mad at it after a bit....

Readers’ Comments “I loved how the twos MCs were so different. I think that’s why it works so well; it has that sort of modern day Pride and Prejudice feel to it.” Girl, aged 15 “Gabe – cool, Jess – not so cool, but they sort of match anyway. Sort of ‘opposites attract’ if you know what I mean. I’m glad I read this book as I did laugh a lot, the author’s got good comic timing, and I liked the ending. For a romance, it’s better than most.” Boy, aged 16 “I think this is a clever story. Yes, it’s a romance, but the characters are interesting and the chemistry is spot on. There’s humour too which helps bring the story to life.” Boy, aged 14 “I think most teenagers, particularly girls, will love this book. It’s very funny in parts. I loved the chemistry between the two characters and how it developed throughout the story. This book would make a FAB film!” Girl, aged 16 “The best romance I’ve read in a long time. Bring on the next book!!!” Girl, aged 15
To Sum It Up: ‘A superbly plotted, teen romance with two wonderfully different MCs. A FINALIST and highly recommended!’ The Wishing Shelf Book Awards
