Suzue Miuchi (美内 すずえ), Miuchi Suzue) is a Japanese mangaka and author of long running shōjo manga Glass Mask. She was born in Nishinomiya, Japan and grew up in Osaka. She won the Kodansha Manga Award (1982) for Youkihi-den and the Japan Cartoonists Association Award (1995).

In December 1975, Miuchi began work on Glass Mask which is regarded as her representative work today. Although the core shōjo manga fandom at the time viewed this series blatantly conservative and obsolete, its popularity turned out to be sensational and it has gained a huge mass of admirers during its run for more than 20 years. Miuchi is now a big-name shōjo manga artist enjoying the fact that Glass Mask is still attracting a new generation of fans, while the long-time fans are eagerly waiting for the conclusion.

Original title: Garasu No Kamen

Genre: shojo (typically for teenage girl readers), drama, romance, slice of life, tragedy, comedy.

The title of Glass Mask refers to the fragile mask wore by the actors in the stage. When they get distracted, the mask could break and the performance fails.

This is the most anticipated manga of all the time, so far. It was created in 1976 with 42 volumes published. Considered “dead” for the next 12 years, it lived again for two volumes during 2008-2009 and not finished yet. However, the author has announced that she will end this series quickly.

Extra patience is worth to wait for the next volumes of this beautiful story. This is about the rise and fall of Maya Kitajima as a professional stage actress. She was 13, not pretty or smart when a famous actress Chigusa Tsukikage found her raw talent and looked at her to be a potential successor for playing the role of Crimson Goddess in the future. Maya followed her passion of acting and left her mother alone to be trained under Tsukikage’s supervision. At the early stage of her career, she met Masumi Hayami, the young director of Daito group and Ayumi Himekawa, a skillful actress of the same age who comes from a notable family in acting industry.

Masumi was impressed by Maya’s strong will in her first performance and being the hugest fans ever since. Known as a cold hearted person, he covered his feeling by being cynical and sometimes cruel to Maya. But he never forgot to send her purple roses without name for every first night of her performances and provided support includes finance secretly when she was in the need of it. Maya called this secret admirer as Purple Roses Man.

Ayumi on the other hand, is an everlasting rival of Maya. Considered as a prodigy since very young, she was surprised by Maya’s acting in a practice session. Ayumi is actually the one who puts this rivalry between them, while Maya always feels inferior when facing her. But they also admire each other’s talent. The plot sometimes unites them to be in the same stages.

The core of this story, apart from Maya’s life, is the drama of Crimson Goddess. As the first actress to take the role and the owner of the copyright, Tsukikage did her best to bring it back to the stage. She trained Maya extremely hard to fulfill the standard she set to play the role while at the same time watching Ayumi’s improvement. This play at some point doesn’t only affect Maya’s life but also the life of almost every figure in the manga.

Rivalry, friendship, intrigues, competition and love color the story splendidly. As a drama of life, it feels complete. My only doubt is about the time line. Within 12 years so many things have changed. I don’t read the second last volume yet so no idea how the author puts the story in the present context, or whether she chose to let it flow as the way it should be in the past.

This is a review of the first seven volumes.

What am I missing, here? I tried really, really, really hard to like this story. Especially being the theatre-nut that I am. I loved the cast of characters. I even loved the rivalry, and the fact that our protagonist's main rival was depicted as someone capable and not (so much of) a petty bitch.

I just didn't like the actual story.

I stopped reading at Volume 7 (?) at the exact moment when Maya was selected for the role of Catherine (in some weird-arse version of Wuthering Heights) for the sheer virtue of knowing absolutely nothing about Catherine or Wuthering Heights .
(No, I'm serious. Their reason for selecting her in the end was because they wanted an actress who had no idea of what Catherine/Wuthering Heights is like so they can start on a blank slate. Which really defeats the entire purpose of their audition. FFS.)

This despite her actual audition being a verifiable flop and huge embarrassment.

Is there any wonder the other auditioners would resent her? Heck, I resent her.

And this theme reoccurs consistently throughout the series*: Maya is a constant flop, and after some intensive child abuse guidance from her mentor, she's literally whipped and kicked and starved and verbally assaulted into "greatness".

*and before the fangurls jump at me and tell me it changes and gets better in the next volumes -- save your breath, this is a review of the first 7 volumes only. If I later decide to continue the series, I will write a separate review for it.

I would feel a lot more sympathy for Maya if she weren't, in fact, an actual useless and stupid girl. The story starts off with a Cinderella-esque vibe where Maya has to go around delivering food for the Chinese restaurant in which her mother works. Her mother would then berate and yell at her for doing a crappy job.

Look, apart from Maya, the only other character I absolutely loathed was her mother, so I'm not on anyone's side here when I say: she's got a point! Maya would constantly forget about her deliveries, space out every single time she stares at a TV screen, falls asleep in classes ... etc ... etc ...

So by the time we get to Volume 7 and she's selected to play Catherine in spite of her sheer ignorance of the subject matter, I had to put the rest of the series on hold.

This is not to say Maya wasn't a hard worker. That was the only thing that pushed me through to seven volumes - Maya was dedicated and passionate, and those are the only qualities I liked in her. The rest of her annoyed me and grated on my nerves.

Maya was selected to play Catherine essentially for being the least prepared, most ignorant auditioner there. There is nothing that frustrates me more than dumb characters. Time and time again, Maya reveals to us her ignorance and stupidity. And the fact that she is rewarded for her stupidity ... I just can't. This is not how theatre works in the real world.
I don't care if she later redeems herself and pulls the best Catherine in all the history of Wuthering Heights performances. Fact is, she should never have gotten that role in the first place. Fact is, a lot of the things others see in her are actually demonstrated by her main rival, Ayumi.

I'm rooting for Ayumi all the way.

(Also, I can't be the only one slightly uncomfortable by the fact that one of the hinted at romances here is a 23 year-old man, as opposed to Maya's 13 years of age? Ah well. I guess people will overlook anything in manga.)

Saya baru tau, kalo daya imajinasiku dudul banged.

Gak lelah berusaha dan mencari tau kenapa saya gak suka cerita Naruto seperti orang - orang normal kebanyakan, kemudian saya membeli DVD nya.

Mulai tonton filmnya dulu deh, ntar kalo filmnya dah beres, baru baca kembali buku komiknya jiaaahhh...

How Maya (& Ayumi, too ^^) learnt her roles and emerged on stage, dazzling the audience, are marvelous~

I don't like the romance, though (#><)
For me, that long-faced-guy Masumi may go to gully or else, I don't care ε=ε=ε=ε=┌(; ̄▽ ̄)┘

Hahaha, sorry to Masumi's fans...

4,5 sao

Okay story time:
This is my first shoujo manga. This is my the first manga I owned. and I still haven't finished the damn series.
I read this series when I was in 2nd grade! SECOND GRADE! When I first found it, this series was being re-released in Vietnam. So I had to wait every week for a new volume to release (by the time I found it they already had 23 volume out). So for the next 48-23 weeks (i can't do math lol), my mom took me to the local bookstore near my school every Wednesday and she would bought me a new volume (she bought me the first 23 volumes for my birthday, because she always saw me borrowing my friend's volumes. I literally cried).
This series still made me laughed and cried when I was in 5th grade even though it's still unfinished (author took a really long hiatus). I loved watching her grow from a 14 years old talented but untrained actress to a world famous (okay.. nationwide famous at most) star then back to being a nobody and start from the bottom again. I love the undying support Masumi gave her from the beginning. He is my definition of a "perfect" alpha male lead. I really hope their story would be a happy ending one. I know their is a gap age between them, but i think the mangaka has managed to make it as not creepy as possible. The love Masumi had for Maya really started from admiration and move to love, not creepy love at first site kind of thing. He acknowledged the age gap (reason why he can only supports her from afar) and doesn't act on his feeling. Maya is technically the one who is making the first step (kinda.. I don't know yet lol).
I have read part of 39 and is really glad the author is redoing that volume, because it is a mess. (i might have the volume number wrong lol). I am excited that she is finally getting back to this classic, but nervous at the same time because she might ruined it due to so many years of being inactive.
For now, I am content (not really) with my unfinished 38 volumes. This is my favorite Shoujo manga of ALL time. 2nd favorite manga (all genre).
Couldn't recommend more

i don’t know anyone who’s ever read this manga and judging by they only have the first book available on this app im guessing not many people know about it/have read it so i guess it’s a little pointless writing a review but might as well share my thoughts. i thought this manga was really cute and wholesome. it was easy to feel sympathetic for the main character and grow fond of her, the storyline was pretty solid, the art style was in my opinion beautiful, and it was just a fun, dramatic, “this would never happen irl but what if” type book. i think i also enjoyed it so much because it’s japanese and i read it in japanese and i have a soft spot for things relating to my culture (also because my mom recommended it to me because she enjoyed it). it’s a cute, fluffy, romance & shoujo manga where there’s a main goal like any other popular action manga, just without the high speed intense action. i just realized i wrote this much without even writing a quick summary…
it’s basically a cute story about this poor girl who has a passion for acting but never had the opportunity to take part in any performances who gets “discovered” by someone we later discover was an iconic actor when she was younger. the main character goes on to get more and more acting opportunities such as kicking ass in her school play (she stole the spotlight and rightfully so; i cringe when i say this but i can’t think of a better-fitting word, she absolutely SLAYED) and is able to enroll in an acting boarding school. overall, it’s just so sweet and cute and nice and so easy to get hooked on. in? idk?
anyways if you read this entire review then thank you i hope you enjoyed it :) i would recommend this book to any readers interested in a cute, plot driven story about a young aspiring actor :)

So far, so-so, tapi akan saya lanjutkan, karena baru vol.1. Hehe masa udah stop aja?

Di tiap suasana dia mengazzamkan dalam hatinya: "I want to act. I want to act." Meski sebel banget sama ibunya. Di awal2 kok sepertinya dia sayang sama Maya. Kenapa menjelang halaman akhir si emak ini sangat menyebalkan? Apa saya salah tangkap?

Oke, lanjut vol.2.

My love for Maya and Masumi will never die! It has been 15 years from the 1st time I read this manga but until now I still obssess with the ending. I can’t resist myself to open the comic again and again, to look for any news about written progress. This is the only manga I want to own and actually own 2 versions. Hopefully author will release new volume soon, I cannot die without seeing what happen to my favorite characters. I just want them to be happy together.

I love the premise of a girl wanting to be an actress, and trying to hone her craft. Especially since her interests seems to be stage plays, and I've been on kind of a kick of watching stage musicals.

Maya is an interesting protagonist, being super ambitious, borderline obsessed, with acting and watching people act. You don't typically see that, and I appreciate having something a bit different.

I'm curious as to how Maya's story will play out

this volume was coincidentally set on new year’s eve and new year so it was a good one to start the year with. the story has potential and is still ongoing after all these years. it’s a huge commitment and so i’m currently unsure whether i want to continue. the premise was interesting and i may continue if i get curious but not looking likely.

~4.5 stars rounded up~

This checked almost all the boxes for me. I love that it centers around the main character’s newfound passion for acting.
A little silly, but nothing I didn’t expect given that it’s a retro shōjo manga.

Persaingan ketat memperebutkan hak pementasan Bidadari Merah membuat keduanya memiliki ikatan kuat.

Kedua, adanya kisah dibalik kisah.

Sedih banget!!! >_<

A classic from Suzue Miuchi. During my visit to the Manga Museum in Kyoto last week, i specifically looked for this. As in Indonesia it disappeared without ever being heard again and was never finished.

So i looked for it, as it was in Japanese i couldn't well read it but even there it stop on number 47! so it really never met its end? it will forever be the comic book that never find its happy ending? So Maya and Ayumi never will have their own battle and we will never know who will become the next Goddess?

/"description"

It was written on 1976, so I don't hold out much candle on it ever finish.

Anyway.....

This is the story about Maya, the regular girl with a big dream of becoming an actress and her rivalries with the beautiful Ayumi. Thrown in Maya's secret admirer who always sends her pink / purple roses, Daito's young director, Masumi. And of course, nothing is more dramatic than a love triangle. So enter Koji, friend of Maya who loves her.
