Eric Arthur Blair was an English novelist, poet, essayist, journalist and critic who wrote under the pen name of George Orwell. His work is characterised by lucid prose, social criticism, opposition to all totalitarianism (both fascism and stalinism), and support of democratic socialism.

Orwell is best known for his allegorical novella Animal Farm (1945) and the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949), although his works also encompass literary criticism, poetry, fiction and polemical journalism. His non-fiction works, including The Road to Wigan Pier (1937), documenting his experience of working-class life in the industrial north of England, and Homage to Catalonia (1938), an account of his experiences soldiering for the Republican faction of the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), are as critically respected as his essays on politics, literature, language and culture.

Orwell's work remains influential in popular culture and in political culture, and the adjective "Orwellian"—describing totalitarian and authoritarian social practices—is part of the English language, like many of his neologisms, such as "Big Brother", "Thought Police", "Room 101", "Newspeak", "memory hole", "doublethink", and "thoughtcrime". In 2008, The Times named Orwell the second-greatest British writer since 1945.

Written in a time when the world was very different these works may appear to be simplistic if measured by todays standards. However this simplicity is probably what makes these works 'classic'. They express a vision of the future through a story that is simple and enjoyable enough for anyone to read.

It is interesting to reflect back on the years since these works were published and appreciate how much the world has changed, yet in some cases the same challenges exist. The author keeps the stories short and to the point while continually progressing forward without additional overhead.

Even though they are now perhaps dated in the message they tell they continue to we worth of the title of 'classic' and can and should be enjoyed by all literary lovers and those who like to think.

7/10- great book about politics, relationships and human nature. This book got me thinking about politics and the extent to which our emotions are innate and possible to extinguish from our lives. It was quite eerie to see the resemblance between the dystopian novel and the reality of events that occurred in Berlin during the Cold War. The reason I didn’t particularly enjoy parts of the book was due to the overload of information about the regime (I found this particularly dull) and I also didn’t relate to the main character Winston- I repulsed his selfish nature with his mum and he was also very paranoid which I found irritating. I also didn’t like the ending of the book as I found it anticlimactic and it frustrated me that Winston had such a weak character to give up his inherent beliefs that easily. The one thing that has benefitted me is that it has made me more interested in politics so I’m going to read more about those topics and listen to podcasts so that I’m more educated about what’s actually going on beneath the surface of “fake news” and mass media. A misogynistic character didn’t particularly appeal and I found myself quite angry in parts of the book about his attitude and views.

Dynamic. This opinion is less academic and more enthusiast based. Initially avoided this book as long as possible, rendering it overrated. It is not. The silent anguish and frustration endured by Winston was quite engrossing. Winston's inner monologues were interesting but not nearly as much as his compulsion to share his thoughts and feelings with somebody, anybody... but to jeopardize his entire livelihood, in all its mediocrity, for the chance to write out his thoughts was so poignant. Thoroughly enjoyed Winton's socially dangerous journey, as well as the revelation that brought him to a very familiar place.

I started to read this book because i want to see the hardship in 1984 just like the army that i have been served. It made me realize how luxurious life i have in the army as in 1984 shows the perfect case of Dystopia. It shows how totalitarian regime can control every aspect of individuals. The systems are maintained by hatred, distrust, and betrayal.

If you never read anything else, read this. This book is absolutely foundational, it remains relevant in so many modern scenarios and can help you see what the signs are for a true distopia to develop.

So it's not listed on here (if it is please let me know so I can adjust), but I listened to Audibles Original version of 1984 with Andrew Garfield. It was pretty entertaining. I haven't read the actual text so not sure if it's true to the book or not.

I hadn't read this book since I was high school, I liked it then; I loved it now. I can see quite clearly the influence of Yevgeny Zamyatin's, "We".

Why have I not read Orwell before

Great read and even relevant in this day and age. Much of what is going on in the world today can be likened to Orwell's writing.
