E read two of this "Rookie Reader" Level A series today. Like the "My First Reader" series, there is a word bank to let you know which/how many words are in the text, but it's easier to pick out the simple books since the RR series is leveled into A, B, and C (with MFR I had to open each book to see whether they had 16 or 40 words).
These use 2-6 word sentences per page spread with alternate sentences rhyming. The illustrations are colorful and mesh well with the text. The two that I read didn't use humor or have any plot, just a series of related sentences.
