Fantastic follow-up to the first book in the Alex Stone series, Stone Cold. Although you can read it without reading the first one and be perfectly up to speed with what's going on, I still recommend reading the first one as well so you can gain deeper insight into Alex and the other characters she interacts with. I always like to know as much as possible about the characters I love.

The story kept me turning page after page long after I should have stopped each night. I finished it in record time. A stellar thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat!

I received a free ARC of this book from the author. This is the third entry in the Alex Stone series, and the second full length novel, the first tale being the short story “Knife Fight”.

There is a mystery to be solved, but the real story is how the events of the first novel, “Stone Cold” have affected Alex and changed her life. Things are spiraling out of control and she’s desperately trying to dig herself out of a very deep hole.

One of the things I enjoyed in other Goldman novels was the way characters from his other stories, like Lou Mason and Kate Scranton, pop in to help each other out. That’s missing here, but I think they must be absent for a reason. Alex is on her own.

In this book as well as it’s predecessor I liked seeing events from several points of view. While Alex is the main character all the way, we also get to see things through the eyes of the homicide detective who wants to take her down. It’s interesting to see their different perspectives on what’s going on and how they come at things from different directions.

I’m enjoying this series and hope there’s more to come.

I received this book as an advanced copy (thanks Joel), I thoroughly enjoyed the Jack Davis series, I loved the Lou Mason series and I am really liking the Alex Stone series, this is book number two featuring Alex Stone, full length book that is, there is also a short story called Knife Fight. The first book, Stone Cold should be read first, as that case continues to have an impact on Alex through this book. Considering how Alex Stone is a defence lawyer there's not a lot of time spent in a court room, it's more investigative, which I like a lot and I look forward to the next Joel Goldman book, will it be a Lou Mason or another Alex Stone, or possibly a Jack Davis.

I received a free ARC download of "Chasing The Dead" by Joel Goldman in exchange for an honest review. This is the second book in the Alex Stone thriller series. It is a mystery legal thriller set in Kansas City, and the fast pace and twists in the plot kept my interest from beginning to end.

Public Defender Alex Stone is appointed to represent a homeless veteran who has confessed to the murder of a prostitute. But Alex believes he is innocent...and fights on his behalf...but putting her own life in danger.

Thank you Joel for the advanced read of this book.

I have mixed feelings on this one. I don't think I enjoyed it as much as 'stone cold' but I'm not quite sure why.
I'm not convinced on the storyline in this one. I'm not sure that I find the behaviour of the two judges completely believable. Having said that, I like how it starts in one place and ends up somewhere completely different; how the initially accused turns out to be nothing more than coincidental. I also liked the twist that they got Alex involved as they thought she'd play it their way and she ends up being the reason they get caught.
Alex was definitely a weaker character in this one, but I think that's right after everything that she's been through. It wouldn't have read right if she'd just brushed everything under the carpet and carried on as before.
I especially liked Bonnie, I think her character was developed really well and I like how she was able to step up. I also loved 'Gladys', I know she was a tiny part but she was great.

I'll definitely be reading some of this authors other work.

#3 is entertaining. Better than #2 in series (of which #1 was only a short story). Getting to know lawyer Alex Stone better and her partner Dr. Bonnie Long and Detective Rossi. Still not crazy about Alex who makes numerous dumb choices because she assumes way too much. I do like the writing and appreciate that the author ties everything up nicely in the end with explanations, because I'm not great at figuring out all the details in "who-done-its" even though I like very much reading mysteries. The cliff-hanger at the end of this book sounds like #4 may be another good beach read.

Chasing The Dead ( An Alex Stone Thriller) BY Joel Goldman

One of Joel Goldman's finest Alex Stone series, it was intriguing and captivating. I was spellbound throughout the energy book. Anyone who enjoys a good edge of your seat and cannot wait to see who has done it this is a must read.

FOUR STARS

Very very nice followup to “Stone Cold” where the main protagonist is so believable, amazing and human. Because of sleep I had to sometimes put the book down, and trust me when I say it was a hard thing to do. I will be looking forward to reading the next installment of this series. Great job to the author.

Excellent read!

Instantly grabs you and pulls you in. The struggle between doing what is right and doing what is best for your family, is something we all struggle with, and Joel Goldman captures it perfectly creating feelings for all the characters both love and hate so much that you can't put it down.
