Book 2 of The Threshold Trilogy: Five years have passed since Adesina began on her path to lead her people, the L’avan, back to their true purpose. Her hopes for peace and prosperity are high until her husband, L’iam, is captured by an enemy bent on ultimate control. Adesina is willing to go to the end of the earth to save her husband, but as she travels deeper into unknown worlds she discovers that there is more at stake in this journey than she ever could have imagined.
Callie comes from a family of writers, and has loved telling stories from an early age. She dabbled a bit in poetry and other short works until she discovered her passion for novels. She is a wife and a mother, and currently lives in Utah with her family.
The adventure continues and what an adventure! Can not believe how this one ends. The next book better hurry up, because this one has definitely stepped up the stakes. Thoroughly enjoyed this story, but we need to know what happens with the rest of the travelers!!!
I also really loved this second book in the series. There were some parts that dragged a little, but overall, I really enjoyed it. My only complaint is the ending! There is a major cliff hanger, and I know the author does not plan to release the third book for some time. Boo!
I am completely enthralled with this series so far. Each book draws me in. The peril, journey, and self growth each character goes through makes you connect with them. I have enjoyed the first two and I am waiting impatiently for the next.
YEAH!! What an awesome read this was! So invested in the way that each of these characters had to endure and the more I gained respect for them. So happy that I read this series.
Oh, the ending cut off was so MEAN! I'm still loving this story. It's rich in information, the world is marvelous, the characters are so full of life and personality. Now I have to grab book 3, because I can't stop it there.
I think book 2 was much better than book 1. We got to explore more of the now established world and relationships. Looking forward to wrapping up the series with book 3.
So this book is not as good as the first one. There are some inconsistencies, not ridiculous, to what is said in this book compared to what was said in the first one.
The author's exposition could use some work. There is a part in this book where the author is recalling information that comes off very wooden and appears to act as filler.
Other than that the story is good, the characters are also good.
I'm not sure why, but I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first in the series. The relationships among characters are further developed, and Adesina is discovering more of her powers. I guess things like sandstorms in the desert and battles with demons just don't interest me much.
Anyway, I do plan to read the third book of the trilogy. Maybe that one will revive my interest.
This book just dragged on and on. It was much more boring than the first in the series. There's a huge chunk in the middle where it just stagnated and it feels like nothing that is happening is progressing the plot or character development. I really tried to finish the book all the way through but I just couldn't.
Action pack adventure that leaves you wanting more. It's very easy to become emotionally invested in the heroine. I have enjoyed reading this series and can't wait to start on #3.
LEGACY OF THE BLOOD is the second in a high fantasy series for young adults, written by Callie Kanno. The story picks up five years after the ending of the first book, THE THRESHOLD CHILD.
I enjoyed this book, but if you haven't read the first book in the series you won't understand what's going on. This is high fantasy with a ton of world building and back story. You can't just jump into it midstream. Think of it like The Lord of the Rings trilogy. You can't just start with The Two Towers, right?
On to my review.
It's been five years since our heroine Adesina embraced her vaya, or magic. She married L'iam and now rules by his side as Queen of the L'avan people, a race of magic users. When he is kidnapped while on a diplomatic mission, she must race to save him from the Shimat, the warrior sect where Adesina was raised.
Before she can mount a rescue, Adesina's Shimat instructor appears at the L'avan village to offer his services to aid in recovering L'iam. Although wary of Kendan's intentions, Adesina agrees to allow him to help. Together with two L'avan warriors and Kendan's tracker, they begin a journey to save not only L'iam but the fate of their world.
Adesina discovers that her lifelong Shimat enemy and rival, Basha, was the one to kidnap L'iam. She also discovers along the way that Kendan still harbors complicated feelings toward Adesina, feelings she no longer reciprocates.
There are many twists and turns as the group faces one obstacle after another. Along the way they make friends and alliances with the various people they meet, Adesina's innate goodness winning over hearts and minds even as they battle for their lives. The overarching myth of the Threshold Child haunts Adesina until she figures out the meaning of the prophecy. She also needs to overcome her inner doubts and fears about the strength of her own vaya, and learn to control it before it controls her.
There is a lot of history and back story that Adesina must learn in order to prevail in her quest. The Dream sequences she embarks on with her Guardian, Ravi, get to be a little much, and I think the author could have handled the information dump a little more creatively. The Dreams themselves tend to be slightly confusing as Adesina both observes the action in the dreams from the periphery and experiences them as the main characters from the history she is observing. If head hopping or abrupt POV changes bother you, this might not be a good fit for you as a reader.
If you enjoy high fantasy and sweeping, magical quests, immerse yourself in the world of Adesina and the L'avan. Unlike the first book, which had a strong and definitive HEA, the ending to the second book is abrupt. But never fear, a third book is in the works.
First sentences - Something wasn’t right. It wasn’t just the unnatural stillness of the forest. It wasn’t the uneasiness of the horses. It was another sense that welled deep within L’iam’s being that told him that something was very wrong. He raised a hand to his companions, indicating that they should come to a halt. The soldiers all reined in their horses and looked to their young monarch with questioning expressions. The L’avan king scanned the trees with his sharp, golden eyes. The flecks of pale metallic green that swam in the gold of his eyes expanded and swirled, lending them a strange glow. Within his mind he reached out to the spirit realm and connected with the power that set his people, the L’avan, apart from the rest of the human race— the power that was sometimes called “magic” by others, but was known as vyala to the L’avan.

I enjoyed this book as much as the first. When I first started it, I was surprised it picked up at least 5 years later than the last book ended. I was concerned that Adesnia had already overcome all her inner fears that plagued her at the end of the 1st book. But alas, they were still there and she was very much still learning about herself and race. Her journey in this book kept the pages turning, as she rushed to save her husband and the future of the world. I did feel the ending of the book happened abruptly with some loose ends... but that just means I cant wait for the next book now. :)
This was a really good book and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I thought it started a little slow (even though it literally starts with a kidnapping) & it took awhile to grab my attention but once it did, it was hard to do anything else! I liked that she developed as a character throughout the book, facing her fears head on and solving them, instead of pushing away her problems until they implode. Very eagerly moving to the next/last book in the series!
Great Story with a superb tell, characters, mood setting feeling when finished. Very very well done. I was looking for the next book and realized the story has been told. Thank you Callie Kanno!!!
