A new home. A new life. To have both, she must outlast a bitter storm. Once Chris fought for her country. Now she's fighting for her faith. And she's about to fight for her life. This is no mere storm. It's a deluge of catastrophic proportions. Swollen by record rains and a ten-inch snowmelt, the Willamette River is hammering Portland, Oregon, with the flood of the century. In Chris McIntyre's heart, a different kind of flood---a rising torrent of emotions---threatens to sweep her away from the community of Kimberly Square. Her newfound faith keeps her from running. But how can she stay? Her push-the-limits personality may have made her a perfect soldier, but it sets her apart from the people at her church. And it sets her at odds with Scott Mathis, the husband of her closest friend, Erin. Fearing for Erin's safety, Scott resents his wife's high-risk friendship with Chris. But when Scott and Chris are forced together to help Kimberly Square residents ride out the storm, a different, equally lethal danger descends on them. Death or redemption rest in the hands of one person---a woman with a warrior's heart.
Donna Fleisher, like her father and brother, is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Her previous novels include Wounded Healer, Warrior's Heart, and Valiant Hope. She lives on the Oregon Coast and is in a never-ending search for sand dollars.
I kept reading, hoping that the book would get better and have some redeeming qualities, but it didn't. The main male character is horribly controlling and abusive to his wife, treating her like a 2 year old, grabbing her, ordering her around and flying off the handle when she doesn't obey him. That is supposedly ok, because he "loves her so much" and asks forgiveness from God when he gets "overprotective". I am embarrassed to be under the same title of Christian if this is what is portrayed as a Christian marriage looks like. To any non-Christian who reads this book: THIS IS NOT WHAT A CHRISTIAN MARRIAGE SHOULD LOOK LIKE!
I could go on about the drivel that is called conversation and "healing" that happens between this same character and his wife's best friend, but I have more meaningful ways of spending my time.
Donna Fleisher is an amazing author. The first book that I ever read of hers was Wounded Heart. Loved it. Then found out she had a series of Homeland Heroes. Of course, I ordered the series and the second book Warrior's Heart, just finished reading. Excited to read the next book. What an amazing story. The love between 2 friends, and what you do to help them. No matter what the consequences hold. The love that Erin has for our Lord, and explains the love to her friend Chris, doesn't want to accept or understand it all. Then finally it all falls into place for Chris, and she understands and accepts the love from God and her friends. I enjoyed both books, on to the next....😘
Chris is with Erin in Portland, finding it hard to stay, hard to open up to people. Yet, feels at home here, and learning to being a Christian . While Scott does t trust Chris, resents the time Erin spends with her. Trying his best to turn his angry over to the Lord. When a storm push the small town into an emergency and they are paired together. Scott realizes that this is where Chris needs to be, with people who love her as she is. Another well written story, of looking and what another person needs first, This will help Erin and him also.
Donna Fleisher’s second book of her Homeland Heroes presents a suspenseful story interweaving the past of two women soldiers, Chris and Erin, who won’t share their war time experiences with Erin’s overprotective husband who seeks to protect his wife from Chris, whom he doesn’t trust. The women’s past includes memories of a fight and death on U.S. land with attackers loose and seeking revenge t guarantee their freedom. A storm complete with flooding, lightning and incessant winds bring all to a climax requiring resolution of more than what the storm brings. Their struggles cause reflection on the God they serve, in spite of hurt, misunderstanding, and fear. The suspense kept me reading. The characters kept me cheering for them. The initial chapter was a lot of characters to figure out. I read this without reading the first book. But as the book settled into to describe the plot, I grew attached to the characters and sought feeling for some, maturity for others and protection for all. I enjoyed the book and would rate it four stars. Thank you Donna Fleisher.
I had a very hard time getting into this book. The beginning is devoted to what each charactort is thinking and I found myself going back to various pages to find out which person I was reading about.
Once I could figure the people out the story line took hold and I could not put the book down. I don't think I would read another of her books simply because I do not like to work that hard to get into the storyline.
Once again, I thought this was an excellent plot by an author who really needs to chane her writing style. The whole tension between Chris and Scott kept you on your toes, wondering when and how they would resolve their problems. This author has a knacj for drawing the reader in and keeping them hooked .
