Paul Gilroy's work investigating the idea of the Black Atlantic is given substance in this set of essays. Like almost every collection of essays they are uneven but at their best allow some of us to hold our heads hgh and say: This is cultural studies – shape, insightful, politically engaged with the world of popular culture while demanding that we take its cultural politics seriously.
