Julie Lawrence is a Victim’s Advocate for the Denver PD. Her job is to respond to domestic violence incidents, fires, car accidents and other tragic events where people need help dealing with their darkest moments. She has had her own share of tragedies in the past which gives her empathy and a unique insight into victims and what they need to heal and move on with their lives. But she is better at giving advice than taking it and has closed herself off from sharing her life with anyone or anything except a stray tiger-striped gray cat.
Rusty Wilson is a firefighter with a reputation for working hard and playing harder. He meets Julie while he is trying to save a burning house and she is protecting a battered wife and an unborn child. He is attracted to her, but not ready to settle down. To his surprise, she resists even his most platonic attempts at developing a relationship. One day a typical call turns into a hostage situation, and Julie rushes to the scene, partly in her role of Victim’s Advocate and partly because Rusty is involved.
She finally accepts his offer of friendship, and as they get to know each other better, they realize they have a lot in common. When a stalker starts playing a cat-and-mouse game with Julie, she and Rusty work together, trying to figure out which of her past domestic violence cases has created a psycho who wants revenge. In her line of work, there are a lot of people who want her dead.
Julie has no idea who is trying to kill her. The warnings had started out as just creepy, but gradually turn into genuine threats on her life. Rusty provides the emotional and moral support she hadn’t realized she needed until the danger increases. Their love affair starts in the heat of passion and ends when he finds out her secrets.
Someone is watching . . . and waiting. Julie has dedicated herself to saving other people. Who’s going to save her?
CRIES IN THE NIGHT is Book #2 in the Denver After Dark series. AFTER MIDNIGHT is Book #1 has won several prestigious awards, including being named Best Indie Suspense Novel of 2013 and third place in the Readers’ Favorite Suspense Novel Award of 2013. Kathy Clark also writes a New Adult Romantic Suspense series (Scandals) and Young Adult Romantic Suspense novels in the CUL8R series under the pen name of Bob Kat. Sample chapters of other books are included.
4.0 RATING- I bought this book on sale on a whim. I didn't know anything about the author or series so wasn't sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised to find the book was well written, the characters were well developed, and the story was well paced throughout. The story and characters slowly develop as the story unfolds so if your looking for a quick paced, over the top suspense story, this may leave you feeling the story is a bit slow. I didn't feel that way at all and appreciated that both main characters got to know each other before sleeping together. There are a couple steamy scenes in the book but this isn't a sex heavy read and I'd consider this lower steam than I normally read. The story was solid and the writing was good so I didn't miss anything.
Crimes in the Night worked fine for as a stand-alone although this is the second book in the series. The first book focuses on one of Rusty's brothers. I really enjoyed the book and would definitely read other books in this series.
Combining romance with authentic details of crime and victims’ advocates, adding a touch of mystery and a deeply wounded protagonist trying to heal, and vividly recreating the Denver after Dark environment of its title, Kathy Clark’s Cries in the Night is a complex, intriguing novel with great characters, interesting plot, and thought-provoking ideas.
The story stands alone convincingly without readers needing to start with book one (I've not read it yet). Characters are given plenty of clear backstory, and their motivations are easily recognized. Family details anchor the tale to a world of very real people. And the author puts a very human face on statistics about abuse and its consequences. The dialog is nicely convincing, and the characters enjoy an appealing relationship as they gradually learn to trust each other—a trust that leads eventually to some sensual steamy scenes.
Wise lessons are learned, and good lessons taught in a story that’s definitely romance, but equally definitely more; I’m glad I had to chance to read and review this novel.
Disclosure: I was given a free ecopy and I offer my honest review.
This book is much more than just a romance. It has a really good story line. The suspense is great and it kept me turning the pages because I had to see what was coming later. There's lots of action also. This is a story a guy can really get into and enjoy, I sure did. I also kind of wished I was Rusty. He's absolutely the perfect guy for her, very understanding and caring.
Julie has a past of course from years before. Because of what happened then she is the perfect Victims Advocate. I don't want to give anything away though. This is a story where someone takes control of the ghosts of their past and is able to build a new life. I really love where this story went and I'm so glad I got a copy, quite a pleasure to read and I can assure you I'll read more from this author.

Cries in the Night is the second book in the Denver Heroes series. Although the hero of this book is related to the hero in the first novel, you can still read it as a stand alone. I do think that it would be much more entertaining if you read the first book, After Midnight, as there are several references. Plus, you would get a good sense of the relationship between the three brothers that show up in the series. This was a great continuation and did not disappoint. Whereas the first book may have contained murder, this one seemed to be a little darker as it focused on domestic violence and its physical and psychological effects.
Julie Lawrence is the Director of the Victim’s Advocacy Program so she works closely with people that are affected by disaster and domestic violence. She comes in contact with police, paramedics, and firefighters. When she runs into firefighter Rusty Wilson, everything changes. He can’t understand how she seems to have no interest in him while he attracts so many other women mainly just because he is a firefighter. He’s even posed in the Firefighter’s HOT Calendar. There is something about Julie that he can’t figure out. Julie goes to great lengths to make herself ordinary and unattractive. She keeps her distance from everyone and lives alone with a cat that adopted her. Unfortunately, her past will catch up with her just as she is starting to realize her feelings for Rusty.
There are several violent images in this book so it’s not for the faint at heart. The depictions were very honest and that’s what I liked the most about the book. It also shows how fearless and selfless people can be. There’s a mystery person that terrorizes Julie which adds an interesting twist that will keep you intrigued until the very end. I look forward to reading the third book in the series, Deep Night.

Cries in the Night picks up a couple of month after the events of the previous book. We met both Rusty Morgan and Julie Lawrence before; in this book they meet for the first time. They are like a slow lit fuse, an initial spark and a gradual seduction that leads to some nice fireworks.
Julie Lawrence is the Victims Advocate for Denver PD, helping all victims. She keeps to herself and keeps busy doing her job never making any close connections to anyone. Rusty Morgan is a ladies man never lacking a date if he wanted one, but meeting Julie after a domestic abuse and house fire call he can't seem to get her off him mind. She impresses him further when he gets taken hostage with a fellow firefighter by a man who has the whole rigged to explode, Julie knows him, he was one of her first she helped and she managed to talk some sense into him. A friendship buds between them but Rusty is frustrated with his attraction to her it seems like she is the only woman to be immune to his charms. Julie isn't as immune as Rusty thinks and as much as she wants to keep him at arms length she feels a strong pull to him. Someone is after Julie and Rusty is determined to protect her, giving into their desires just happens. It obvious to every one how Rusty feels about her but she is afraid her secret past may change that.
Overall this was a great read another one I could not put down; a straight through read. It wasn't as predictable I was torn between the obvious and the not so obvious. Yeah It's good. You get to see more of the Morgan family and love them even more, especially Mom.
Julie works for the Denver police department as a Victims Advocate so she gets called whenever there is a fire, abuse or any kind of crises where she is needed to help people through their difficult time. She always goes to them immediately and continues to keep in touch with them to make sure they are alright. Due to events in her past, she knows how important that is.
Rusty is a firefighter who Julie met several times when they were on the same scene. As a handsome fireman, Rusty has always had women coming on to him but Julie is different and he is not sure what to think of her. They are in each other's thoughts a lot and slowly build a relationship.
This book is well researched making the details on victims' advocates easy to follow. While it has many heart-breaking events, this story is a mystery with romance and a fantastic ending. Julie and Rusty's relationship progressed slowly which I really liked. So many authors have the couple fall in love or having sex instantly so that it makes the story unbelievable. That didn't happen in this book.
I had a hard time rating this book so I am giving it 3.5 stars.
Cries in the Night (Denver after Dark series book 2) By Kathy Clark
5/5
Julie has worked for the last 5 years as Victim Support, she kept herself to herself never really dated and that’s the way she liked it, one night while attending a domestic abuse scene she meet Rusty a fireman , she already knows his 2 brother one a cop the other a paramedic , she has met his brother quite a few time within her line of work, however Rusty after meeting her again at another scene cant shake there was something about her that he liked , he could talk to her and she understood , he was also intrigued by the mystery she kept around herself . Julie felt comfortable with Rusty, she felt safe something she had not felt in a long while, however she had a past that was her dark secret, one she was trying to get far away from. This story is well written, and deals with situations that are taboo, however they are dealt with in a matter of fact way, leaving the reader to make up their own mind. This is a story of loss, betrayal, discovery and ultimately transcension
Julie is a Victim's Advocate always rushing to a scene to help. She likes her life, never really dates and never lets anybody get to close. Until she meets Rusty, a fireman. Rusty likes women but is not interested in settling down with just one woman. However after meeting Julie several times at scenes he can't deny that he likes her. She is not like the women he usually dates, he can actually talk to her and she understands him. They both feel comfortable around each other. He can't help get protective when thing start happening around Julie. Together they try to find out who is a threat to her. And while spending all this time together the inevitable happens and they fall in love. I really liked this book and couldn't put it down. The story has some nice twists and turns that will make you want to continue reading. It is very well written and I really liked the characters.
Cries In The Night Denver After Dark Book #2 by Kathy Clark This book had be from the very beginning and it has it all terror, love, sex, fear and lies. They by fate get pushed together and things get crazy in both there lives and the end is a real shocker for Julie and Rusty,
Loved this book. It is a romantic suspense with a very well thought out plot line. The characters are easy to get involved in. I spent half the night finishing it because I couldn't go to sleep without knowing what happened. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys romantic suspense. I know I'm going to be reading other books by this author soon.
This is the first book I've read by Ms. Clark and it is an excellent one. Julie is a Victim's Advocate working with the Denver police. Rusty is a firefighter. Despite her standoffishness and his playboy ways, they slip quietly into love. The only problem, she has a terrible secret which will be brought to light. Well written characters, a plot that won't quit, and a surprise ending make this an excellent choice for a believable and satisfying read.
Nothing terribly objectionable, but nothing particularly memorable, either. There was a lot of showing rather than telling and I went through it so quickly that I'm not sure I can actually claim to have read the whole thing.
“She turned around and saw him standing in the doorway. His blue eyes twinkled, and that sexy grin lifted one corner of his mouth. He was dressed in a navy blue sweater and jeans, and his face was clean-shave. He looked so handsome Julie felt her heart do that crazy little flip-flop she was becoming used to when he was around.”
Four stars for this exciting edge of your seat book! I really am starting to love this author and this series!! These books are so easy to read and get involved with!

Julie is a Victims Advocate for the Denver PD. She makes sure to keep to herself never forming any sort of relationships with anyone. Rusty is the epitome of a lady’s man and he knows it, but after meeting Julie after a domestic violence call, he thinks it may be time to change his ways. During a hostage crisis involving Rusty, he becomes even more impressed with Julie and her calmness and the way she handles the situation. And as much as she doesn’t want to form a relationship with Rusty she can’t help the feelings she’s beginning to feel for him. But once she finds out someone is after her, Rusty will do anything to keep her safe. This was another great book in the series.
SYNOPSIS: Cries in the Night (Denver Heroes # 2) Fans of Nora Roberts and Karen Robards will love this pulse-pounding novel of romantic suspense, as a red-hot firefighter reaches out to save a courageous beauty from the terrors of the night.
As a victims advocate for the Denver Police Department, Julie Lawrence is always on call for survivors of abuse, fighting for the justice she never got for herself. Its a high-risk job that makes a lot of enemiesone of whom seems to be now targeting Julie. But teaming up with firefighter and local hero Rusty Wilson sparks a different kind of danger. As Julie surrenders to intoxicating passion, she finds herself breaking her own rules, caring about Rusty in a way she thought shed sworn off forever.
When a domestic incident escalates into a deadly hostage crisis, Rusty is willing to risk everything to protect those who really need his helplike Julie, the breath of fresh air who fills his days with purpose and his nights with pleasure. He just hopes hes not too late to stop a chillingly orchestrated act of payback that puts the woman he loves at the mercy of a madmans rage.
CHARACTER BACKGROUND: Julie Lawrence is a strong and compassionate woman with lots of secrets. She doesn't like attention, but her passion for helping victims or survivors of horrific events proves that she cannot stay away from the spotlight for long. So in order to keep herself safe she must depend on a man that has the ability to crush her.
Rusty Wilson is a playboy and he's not ashamed of it. He never felt compelled to spend his entire life with one woman who he simply can't tolerate outside the bedroom. The only people he truly cares for is his brothers and parents. That is until he crossed paths with the unassuming Julie Lawrence.
REVIEW: Let me start off by saying that I liked Cries in the Night much more than the first installment in the series. The subject matter is deep, raw, and true. Domestic violence is a very unfortunate yet common event that more people needs to be aware of; husbands beating their wives and kids within an inch their lives, women who let their husbands abuse them because they think they deserve it, and children who loses the foundation of their lives because of selfish and evil parents. The description of scenes were very real and painful, as well as the aftermath of the violence. The plot was truly interesting, especially the reason behind Julie's identity. I like the pace of their relationship because it had the right kind of speed and realism.
Cries in the Night is heartbreaking, eye-opening, and rage-inducing. Oh, it's very romantic by the way. *wink* I give it 5 stars.
This very first paragraph can, and was, copy-pasted from the review for AFTER MIDNIGHT. First, the cover redesign was brilliant. Not that the old covers for these two titles were terrible, but the new ones are just so much more aesthetically pleasing; second, the beginning. My goodness, the beginning...
{ ...like I said; original content now }
In this second book, our lead male is none other than Sam's older brother, Rusty (baby brother, Chris, is next). You may have fallen in love with him a little bit in AFTER MIDNIGHT (gotta love those siblings). His lady? None other than Sam's friend, Julie, the civilian who runs the victim/survivors group for the department.
We start this book with a bang too -- an inside look at a brutal domestic altercation scene. Like most scenes like this one, it hits Julie particularly close to home -- her ghosts and demons are what lead her to helping the survivors, after all. When Julie arrives to the scene, she runs into Rusty, who is there with the fire department.
I liked Rusty from the glimpses we got of him in AFTER MIDNIGHT, but I really enjoyed him here in his book, in his element, in his heart. We had even fewer sights of Julie in AFTER MIDNIGHT, but you could tell that this woman had her problems, and I personally was excited to uncover them.
Well, maybe excited is too happy a word.
What I liked most about this second book in the trilogy was watching Julie unfold -- watching her slowly learn to trust and allow Rusty in. She has her reader-hair-pulling moments, those moments where you just wish she would talk to him and tell him her secrets, but I felt that with the way the story was set up, the timeline was appropriate.
Coming soon is Chris's story. I'm sad to see these brothers go, but I'm excited to see where Kathy is going to take the youngest brother!
(Please note: This story deals with domestic abuse and the opening scene is graphic. Please take this into consideration before reading further and/or purchasing this book.)
This was a surprisingly heavy story. After reading the first story in this series, I was (admittedly) expecting this one to carry a similar vibe. But that got tossed out the window after reading Chapter 1.
Rusty and Julie's relationship was overshadowed by an unseen threat to Julie, a stalker who made it known they were out for their pound of flesh. Her fear and Rusty's urgency to protect her are damn near tangible. I won't lie, I felt chills at times reading this story.
But I also felt incredible warmth and joy. Unlike his brother Sam who admitted he was a one woman man, Rusty was more like a love-'em-and-leave-'em man but Julie made him want to be more than that if just for her. That's not to say he didn't influence change in Julie though. He did, just not in a way I thought he would.
It took me a bit to realize that Julie was only existing, keeping herself from others because of her past. But existing, even if you do so with a purpose, isn't living. With Rusty, she found the courage to live again, to grow, to be stronger than before, to move forward. The woman she was at the end was a stunning contrast to the woman she was at the beginning.
Ms. Clark is an author who knows what she's writing about. The details she puts into this story about what it means to be a Victims' Advocate are so well written that I had no problem understanding what these men and women do and how much abuse survivors can benefit from them. This was a fantastic story to read because the light and life at the end made all of the darkness throughout it worth reading.
4.5* (Received from NetGalley via Tasty Book Tours for an honest review)
What an amazing and moving story, mixed with danger, suspense, love, passion and tenderness. The way the work of both firefighters and the victim's advocate is described is real, raw, and lifelike. There are many scenes from the work they do, the reality of the daily life they go through, the stress, trials, and triumphs so clearly stated. There are some violent scenes, that made my stomach turn with the brutality and cruelty. The creepy, fearful moments Julie's feeling, with the stalker after her, are palpable, and constantly present. Still the main focus of the story is the tender connection, attraction, and friendship forming between Julie and Rusty. Slowly but surely Rusty is changing his playboy ways and his love-them-and-leave-them reputation, and at the same time Julie is coming alive again, with feelings of attraction, interest, and allure towards Rusty. The more time they spend together, deeper their feelings for each other grow, the relationship changing, the affection, desire, and devotion evident. This story kept me up late into the night, it is captivating, fascinating, and yet chilling at the same time with the dangerous events the characters go through. While the romance of the story made me swoon and sigh, the other aspects of the tale made me think, and ponder with the eye opening way abusive relationships are described. A fierce, intense, and complex, memorable story ~ Five Spoons
I have mixed feelings about this one. The heroine truly was a heroine as she is a Victim's Advocate and the descriptions of all that she did to help crime victims was amazing. A bulk of this, of course, was helping abused women and we felt her helplessness when she ended up visiting the same women over and over again. But she never gave up. We understand why, later, she has such empathy for these victims. There was a lot of focus in this book on her job but the romance, and the conflict to it, was woven throughout. My mixed feelings came from how long it took for the story to really get going. There was a lot of ground being laid in the first several chapters with action for both MCs, but the interaction between them was slow to start. So while I enjoyed reading about Julie's work, I was anxious for their story to get started.
The critical scene took me by surprise, which is a good thing. We were led to a certain suspect even though obvious, but the author did a great job of making it the obvious be the only logical suspect, so in the end, I was taken by surprise. So a little slow moving on the romance part, but the suspense story line was very good.
There is always something to be said about a man in a uniform! Hot, and sexy as hell! Rusty fits this rule to a capital T, he is a firefighter and he is always putting his life on the line, maybe that's why he likes playing the field?! Julie works with men and women children that have been caught up in abuse or have lots a love one and needs some extra help picking up the pieces. Who will be there when Julie needs someone to help her pick up the pieces, can she let Rusty in and help save her??
This was a lovely book, great story, with amazing well creative charterers. Like the first book it has a bit everything going on, right from the beginning the author introduces us to Julie and what she does I was glued to the book, then I felt like the book fell a bit short, it lost its edge a little. Still a great book to read and i cant wait to ready more!
I would rate this book 4 out of 5 fangs! Reviewer for Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock
Second entry to the Denver After Dark series. This one deals with Rusty, the oldest Wilson brother, who is a Denver Firefighter and Mr. July in the Firefighters pin-up calendar. He has a great life, enjoys his job and being the bachelor around town, with no strings attached. Why is he then having such a hard time with Victim's Advocate Julie Lawrence? She appears untouched by his charm, even though they get along well.
As their jobs intersect, they begin to get closer. Julie assumes Rusty will fly away when he gets bored and move on to the next woman. Rusty is having a crisis, because he doesn't want to move on. However, Julie has a secret and it endangers both of them. Rusty is hurt by the fact that Julie will not trust him with her secrets. It is almost too late when they both open up.
I was gifted a copy of this book for review from Netgalley. This story is full of suspense and intrigue. Julie is a wonderful advocate she is caring and compassionate. She is so protective of those she helps.however she has secrets of her own. She is jaded on love and relationships so she steers clear of them. Rusty us a sexy alpha he is helpful to those around him. He happens to also be a Man whore. He doesn't believe in relationships and hasn't had a woman that he wants to stick around for a while. Something about Julie though draws him she has the same beliefs as him except for the sex and leave them. They both deal with unfortunate events and understand each other in a way others do not. When danger strikes Julie, Rustys protective instincts kick in and the story heats up.
In part this is possibly my mistake because I didn't realize this was a part 2. But still, I have some complaints. The beginning of the book nothing seems to happen except the introducing of about a dozen characters. There is no conflict or action at all for the first third of the book. Then there is suddenly the problem in the story and the romance part which both happen in fast forward. Also, there's two bits about her garage and in one she has an attached garage and is careful about her opener not being stolen so it won't give access to her house, and then later she has a detached garage so the antagonist can spy on her while she walks from the garage to her house. Seems like something an editor should have caught.
Amazing story of love, heartbreak, loyalty, and suspense. This book kept me on the edge of my seat as I read it and I couldn't put it down! Julie is an amazing heroine who will do anything to help her clients get away from an abusive relationship, something she knows all too well. Rusty is a hot, alpha firefighter looking to settle down. When he meets Julie, he feels the connection but she refuses to acknowledge it and insists they remain friends. When someone from Julie's past begins stalking her and finally gets her, will she be able to survive to tell Rusty exactly how she feels? Click the buy link today for this amazing read!
An enjoyable read that kept me guessing as to who was after Julie. Advocates like Julie, in real life, have a hard job to do and I can imagine that it can be draining, frustrating, yet quite rewarding. The past that Julie was running from wasn't the past I thought it would be. When Rusty made the remark that Julie was a female version of him, he should have known that she would be the perfect person for him. I loved how the story had both Rusty and Julie's pov. When Julie has to deal with a hostage situation, that is when Julie and Rusty start falling for each other even though they don't realize it. I was satisfied with the ending even though I wished it hadn't ended so soon.
As far as the Denver Heroes series goes....I enjoyed Cries In The Night much more! I didn't have it all figured out so early in this book.
Rusty is a super-sexy firefighter and Julie works as a victim's advocate for the Denver police dept. In this story we get to see the strong alpha lead actually become somewhat of a victim and Julie helps in ways no one thought possible. On the other hand Julie herself becomes a victim and Rusty is there to support her through it all. Actually being in both sides to the victim/supporter roles makes Julie & Rusty made for each other.
I think after reading Cries in the Night I will keep a lookout for more in this series.
I liked this book a lot as it was a nice easy read with a storyline that was hard to put down. it was nicely suspenseful, though I figured out who was doing it right away. one of the many things I enjoyed about this book was the closeness of the brothers. in meeting all of them you know each has his own story to tell and each has his own book coming. I love interconnected books that have their own HEA.
VERY POWERFUL STORY LINE WHICH COULD DESCRIBE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE IN THIS SITUATION. MANY MAY READ THIS AND THINK THIS MIGHT BE AN EXAGGERATION BUT IT'S NO. I KNOW SOME REAL PEOPLE WHO COULD SHARE STORIES MORE HORRIBLE THAN THIS WAS. DOMESTIC ABUSE HAPPENS MORE THAN IS REPORTED BECAUSE OF THE SHAME OF IT. THIS WAS SPOT ON I HOPE READING THIS WILL HELP SOMEONE GET HELP. THE BOOK COVER WAS VERY YUMMY! ;D
I received this book as an arc for a honest review. I'm totally loving this series. Awesome characters and strong women. This book has Julie, who is a victims advocate with the police department. She gets calls to domestic and child abuse situations. Rusty is a fire fighter who she meets on the job. This book has violence, a stalker, and suspense. It also has lots of romance with a hot guy and a HEA. Loved it!
Second book in the Denver Heroes Trilogy. Rusty Wilson is a firefighter and Julie a Victim's Advocate for the Denver police. Suspense, drama and romance...... A great read. Full review to follow......
