Through witnessing her parents' bitter divorce, sixteen-year-old Taylor Brogan has learned what she believes to be a certainty—men lie, men betray, men can’t be trusted. When her first boyfriend cheats on her, Taylor can’t even pretend to act surprised. After all, her own father left her mother for another woman after fourteen years of marriage, so it was only a matter of time before it happened to her too.
Betrayed one time too many, Taylor vows to give up boys for good. But when she meets sweet, gorgeous Michael Hurst at a party, her resolve to stay single begins to crack. Maybe, in spite of her past, she can trust him not to break her heart. Taylor and Michael begin an exciting-but-cautious romance, hitting several challenges along the way—parental disapproval, family secrets, and the most daunting obstacle of all, Elena Brewster, a calculating beauty who is determined to make Michael hers.
Not just another teen romance, JUST YOU is about learning to embrace the risks involved in trusting someone with your heart.
Rebecca Phillips is a copyeditor by day and a TV series binger by night. Oh, and sometimes she writes novels. Rebecca lives in beautiful Atlantic Canada with her family, which includes a spoiled senior-citizen cat.
I have previous read Faking Perfect by Phillips which I really really enjoyed, I was very impressed with Phillips writing so decided to go back and read other works by her and see what I thought.
Phillips writes teenage crushes and romance extremely well. Parts of this story actually made me feel a little giddy with butterflies as though I myself was discovering a brand new crush.
I really appreciate that Phillips includes interesting issues in her stories. I don't think this story delved as deeply as Faking Perfect did but I still really appreciated the commentary on divorce and the way it effects the children of these relationships.
I think Phillips is a great writer and I look forward to reading more of her books.
I purchased this book shortly after finishing Phillip's newest novel Any Other Girl as I liked how she tackled issues relevant to the YA genre. After reading two of her other books I felt it was time to find out what else she had to offer.
This story was an outright romance that explored the topics of first love and forbidden romance. It also explored deeper issues such as divorce and how the fallout impacts the outlook on others and the ability to trust.
I thought this story was really cute. It reminded me of my high school days when the look from a guy would give me butterflies and you felt you were bulletproof.
If I were to offer some constructive criticism is that there did not seem to be too much conflict between Taylor and Michael. It all centered around them but not between them. As this story is spread out over three books, I think that may be intentional and we will see more drama unfold as we progress through the series. I have purchased the next story and I am anxious to get started!
I think this was just a typical YA story but what makes it unique was, it wasn't just about teenage love story it was also about dealing with life especially with broken families. It's really hard to build up your trust when it was all shattered after those events but Taylor was strong to handle it. I like this so far and I REALLY WANT TO READ MORE!!!
Definitely not as good as Out of Nowhere - the love story was quite boring and most of the supporting characters, like Robin and Taylor's mother for example, were simply annoying.
nothing. happens. in. this. book. nothing. and for some reason, it's not dramatically apparent until it's too late.
normally, you'll notice early on when a YA romance is taking the dive of boredom into challenger cove. the sign is that every major highlight of the story corresponds with a holiday or a dance or a football game and it's probably a pacing issue.
but the emptiness of just you sort of sneaks up on you, because you're waiting for the conflict to mic drop on the love fest. i don't even need to mark the fact that there is no conflict with a spoiler because any reader should be happy enough to be saved a handful of hours of reading to find out for themselves.
you probably think i'm being dramatic, but this book can be summarized in one run-on sentence: a sophomore starts dating a slightly older boy shortly after she's cheated on by her previous boyfriend and she moderately struggles with adapting to being in love while her divorced parents attempt to parent her but she doesn't allow it because she's in LOVE goddammit. guess what? this is the beginning, middle and end of the story.
This book was really cliche and boring, I am going to start off right away saying that if you don't like slow, "insta-live" or books based on relationships that have no chemistry, don't wait your time with this book.
The MC and Michael seem to have no chemistry together. One moment she's really awkward around him and swore that she'll never date again, and then suddenly, they start dating.
Honestly this book was a disappointment. I kept on hoping that this book would get better further into the story but the more chances I gave it the more disappointment I felt. The plot isn't intriguing and is rather cliche unfortunately, the characters aren't the most interesting and I just felt really bored reading this.
This book seems to have no bad reviews except for mine so far so maybe I'm just the odd one out. But in all honesty, this is one of the worst books I've read and I've read a lot of horrible books before.
(Sorry my review uses a lot of dead words and isn't really coherent as I am super tired and hangry 😂)
As I read the last page (I was on an Ebook) I thought to myself that’d be a good ending, and then thought...maybe not. And then it ended. Still a good book though, defiantly recommend!👍🏻
This book was really cute. Taylor believes that most men cheat. Her father cheated on her mother and tore their family apart. Then her boyfriend who used to be one of her best friends cheats on her, she was just waiting for it to happen. So finally she decides that she's going to not have another relationship until after high school is over. But then she meets Michael. He's gorgeous, he is a really good guy, and he's trustworthy. Michael proves to Taylor that he really loves her and he can be trusted.
Michael is a really good person. He's sweet, always there for Taylor, and he's got a father that keeps pushing him. So he's not perfect but he's pretty great. Taylor is a good character and understandably a little jaded. But Michael does everything he can to prove to her that he's there for her.
This book was an easy read with likeable characters, and a plot that was real to modern day life. I am curious to find out what happens in the next book!
The main character, 16-year-old Taylor, has trust issues stemming from the demise of her parents' marriage, and then from a boyfriend who she had known since kindergarten. When Taylor meets a new guy, she doesn't have much faith in the relationship working, but she can't help fall for him anyway. The novel takes you through Taylor's internal struggles and introduces some of her boyfriend's struggles too, which I am curious to see if they get dealt with in the next book.
I would recommend this book to the 18+ audience as it has relationship issues meant for a mature readership.
I seriously loved this book. I loved Taylor - she knows that she's damaged as the result of her parent's divorce and now her boyfriend Brian cheating on her so she doesn't trust easily and she's definitely not looking for a replacement for him.
Enter Michael. I knew it'd only be a matter of time before she would go out with him, because who could blame her. Gorgeous, yet not arrogant or pretentious and he gets her!
Taylor's dad is a hoot, sometimes clueless when it comes to his teenage daughter, but fun to be around and her mom - she needs to lighten up and not let her skewed outlook on men and relationships affect Taylor's outlook.
Just downloaded book 2 because now I have to see what happens when Michael heads off to college!
Sweet young love! With all it's trials & tribulations. Reminds you of simpler times even while navigating thru barracudas & cheating ex-boyfriends. The divorce of Taylor's family is a major issue throughout the book and though divorce is always sad it lends a firm reminder of how life is sometimes - not fair & we don't always get it right the first time. I hope that we get to see how Taylor's relationships continue. I'd go onto say this is a pretty real & accurate portrayal of HS relationships...that is for those of us who don't wear blinders
Lovely sweet YA read there were a few ups and downs not huge it's funny how our parents actions affect the way we see the world her father cheating and leaving her mother showed her we are not perfect we all make mistakes of how we handle a situation and Taylor's dad didn't do a good job but he tried to make up for it but the damage was done and Taylor was messed up I'm glad she met Michael and let go of her issues eventually lol there is a sequel too so Yay
I just couldn't really get into this. I found myself skimming a lot of it. The main characters dad had an affair and her parents got divorced when she was younger and now she's afraid of relationships and love and I just don't believe in letting your parents past affect your future. You shouldn't let one bad experience ruin the rest of your life so I found a lot of this book to be irritating. The romance was just meh.
I liked it. I didn't think it was extremely spectacular, but I did enjoy it. Very coming of age plus coping with broken families and images of perfection. Looking forward to the next (until I read a tiny blurb and it gave away the plot! Grr!!!) Well written, good characters and sweet but realistic as well.
It was a nice concept of a story but it was honestly hard to get through at some points. This book is a good example of a why most of the time I'm weary of reading books about high school romance. They're most of the time un realistically serious with each other. No interest really in reading the next book.
I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was a good YA romance novel, but it wasn't your usual YA romance. This book also dealt with emotional issues associated with children and divorce. The storyline is great and the characters were relatable. Can't wait to read the next book.
Sweet realistic believable. I am a serious bookaholic this one I stumbled upon because it was free had used my allotted addiction money. So glad. Taylor is a sweetheart, she forgives has a strong conscience and tries at 16 to be what most adults never grasp. Enjoyed this book from page one. Must now get part 2. Great author. Love the story and so well written.
I liked that she had to get over her trust issues to finally have a life let alone a relationship. I was surprised by the ending until i found out there was a sequel i knew it was to good to be true but hoping for the best with her.
Liked the cheating and divorce aspect on the effects on young girls. The way it effects the outlook on the relationships they have after. The mom has a right to her feelings but in the end she realizes her mistake. Good story.
Very sweet YA book! This wasn't your average mushy teenage book where there is contemplation about who to have sex with. This book had a very realistic view of a brokend family and dealing with two parent homes.
