Maxine Donovan, owner of “Maxine’s Muffins,” has been delivering muffins to the Chestnut Rock Resort for almost two years. During the first year, her relationship with Ethan grew from awkward greetings into a comfortable friendship. Confident their relationship was destined for more, Max held nothing back, but her confession caused Ethan and his friendship to run.
Ethan Rookman has desired Max since the first moment her green eyes met his. She’s his mate, the one woman fated for him, but sometimes fate can be cruel. While most shifters claim their mate within days, Ethan has never made rash decisions, a characteristic he’s thankful for when Max’s true personality is revealed. He’d rather live alone than with a mate he can’t trust.
After months of not speaking, a passionate kiss and angry words cause Ethan to desire his mate more than ever. He decides he can forgive her dark heart, but Max doesn’t make it easy for him to apologize. She only agrees to listen after he rescues her from a horrible date and Ethan has one night to convince her to give him another chance at forever.
Max's Skunk by Jane Wakely is the sixth book in her Chestnut Rock series. Each book can be read as a stand alone book.
In Max's Skunk, Maxine Donovan is a baker who bakes muffins for Chestnut Rock Resort, owned by Ethan's family. For two years Ethan and Max have been building a relationship. Maxine hopes to be more then friends and so does Ethan but he likes to take his time....That threw me for a loop because most shifter stories are insta-love romances so for Ethan to be patient enough to not claim Max for two years seemed a bit off to me but Ethan is a skunk and I really don't know much about skunks...who are apparently very slow on making any decisions. So yeah I didn't agree with that aspect of the story but then again I think the slowness of the relationship was an important part of the storyline.
***spoiler alert*** ***spoiler alert***
So Max is human and Ethan is a skunk. Ethan is very sensitive about his skunk status, maybe picked on as a kid. I don't know. It has been over a month since I read this story and i can't quite remember why Ethan was sensitive about this. Max loves skunks (has no idea about shifters) but she absolutely loves skunks...so much so that her home is a shrine to skunks. Now most people might think this is weird but as a collector of stuff (not skunks) I thought that part was funny and I got it. Ethan on the other hand didn't. He thought Max was messing with him so he breaks off their relationship. At this point I was ready to punch him in the face. Seriously what guy would think a woman would spend hundreds of dollars on collectibles just to mess with him? *Sigh* So yeah at this point I wasn't an Ethan fan but eventually someone smacks some sense into him and the couple get a HEA.
I did enjoy this story. It was different from a typical shifter story. It was interesting to read about

Have you ever been so consumed, mortified, or ashamed of a personal trait that you automatically assume the entire world is aware of it, and laughing at you? That’s Ethan Rookman. Ashamed of his shifter animal, he absolutely abhors the skunk he can become. So, when his (future) mate talks about how much she likes skunks, his only thought is that she is mocking him. The question is, will Ethan realize that the world doesn’t revolve around his insecurities before completely driving away his mate, Maxine Donovan forever?
Max’s Skunk is a short and sweet novella, which reminds us at heart, our own personal insecurities are just that- our own. The rest of the world often aren’t even aware of our little quirks and traits, or at least rarely give them a second thought. Sure, there are bullies out there that like to pick on people for some imagined imperfection- but most people don’t really even care about them- even if they seem like a huge glaring billboard to you.
Wow…that was a bit of a long winded introduction, wasn’t it? Anyway, I really enjoyed this short read, although it is the first book of this series that I have read. I am intrigued, and plan on going and picking up the others, and plan on waiting patiently for Cole’s story (please say it’s coming?). I would recommend this novella as a way to pass some time, as it is a very enjoyable read.
My Thoughts - 4 out of 5 Unicorns - I really liked it!!!
The cover is pretty, and I’m glad the animal made the cover :)
I cried in this book for poor Max, raged at Ethan, and a few times thought he was an idiot, but I think Cole would agree with me…lol I was laughing several times because only people could be so silly. I see the same type of silliness in the high school where someone makes an innocent comment and then is attacked because the other misunderstood the intent….I think the hormones in high school though makes it worse. There were several intense scenes, but you will have to read it because I don’t want to foreshadow what happens or ruin it for someone.
I really enjoyed all the different shifters in this series because you don’t see such a wide mix of shifters in most series. Jane Wakely’s writing connects with me, and I definitely am a big fan and will keep reading all of her shifter stories :)
I’m excited and sad to read the next book because it is the last one in this series, and I don’t think there is any more in this series. But I know she has a new things coming soon, and I can’t wait :) I’m off to read!!
I haven't read the other books in this series but I did like this one so I will probably go back and read the one's before this.
Maxine Donovan delivers her muffins to a resort. She meets Ethan Rookman and thinks he is the man for her and they spend a couple of years getting to know each other and things seem to be going well until she tells him what her favorite animal is. She is told by Ethan's cousin that he never wants to see her again.
Ethan thinks that Maxine has found out his secret. The secret is that he shifts into a skunk and he thinks that she is making fun of him and he knows that she is his mate but he won't have a relationship with someone that could make fun of him.
This was a great book and I enjoyed reading it. I have never read a book about a skunk-shifter. I really never thought about a person turning into a skunk.
Of all the Chestnut Rock Series so far Max's Skunk is my favorite. Maxine's is a successful business owner and she makes deliveries to the Rookman's every week. Ethan Rookman knew the first moment her looked into Max's green eyes that she was his mate, but he didn't act on it. His cousin knew of his mate and didn't act on it and they were doing ok by themselves. After a few harsh words were said and they don't speak for a while, Ethan is left to save Max from a horrible date. He has one night to tell her everything and hope that she will believe in him and trust him. Can the call of your mate be strong enough to erase the hurtful words Ethan has said to Max?
I absolutely LOVE this series. I keep reading reviews stating that it's too short, it's needs to be a longer story for the information, etc... but I think that they are great! I really hope that more follow. To me, since this is a series, it's like one long story and if you read them together, it's not too short for the information. Please keep this series going!!! I want to read about Cole :)
