Telesa #2

When Water Burns

Rate this book
“Maybe you’re not meant to manipulate fire the way I do. Maybe sparks are all you’re ever going to make.” He snarled, “Or maybe you just need to be a better teacher and give me more.” Before I could reply, he grabbed my hand, twisted and pulled me into a restraining lock. Body pressed against my back, he held me in a chokehold. I struggled. Kicked. Fought. Pain knifed me as I tried to free myself. He spoke and his breath was hot in my ear. “Now, fire goddess let’s see if I can make more than sparks.” Rising panic choked me, with it came rage. And with rage, came fire. Keahi felt it. He laughed as I strained against him. As together we both burst into flame... With Nafanua and the Covenant Sisterhood out of the way, Leila and Daniel are finally able to love without fear of retribution. Or are they? As a malicious Telesā plots her revenge, a mysterious stranger arrives on the island. Fueled by hate and running from a fiery past, he looks to Leila for answers and she must fight to contain the fury of Fanua-afi while trying to protect all those she loves. It seems that this is a battle she must wage alone, for Daniel’s ocean birthright cannot be denied and he refuses to walk beside her. Are Leila and Daniel destined to be forever divided by the elements? When it comes to Water and Fire, daughter of earth and son of the ocean – who will endure? When water burns? This is the second book in the Telesā Series and follows on from book one, 'Telesā: The Covenant Keeper.' REVIEWS “I flat out love these books. Reading and reading for days; revelling in that rush of finding a brilliant series, and knowing you’re not even halfway through yet. Telesā is just that kind of story.” Catherine Woulfe, Books Editor, The Sapling, NZ. “Telesā is supernatural elements grounded in Samoa of old, the reading and seeding of myths and legends and lores untold, genealogy and story strung in the integrity of line, Pacific epistemologies wrapped in passion sublime. Its ancient mythology meets teenage biology, a kind of Sex in the city meets Hex in the Bush!” Dr Selina Tusitala Marsh, NZ Poet Laureate. “In the words of Simone, a DALASHIOUS sequel to Telesā. If I were to sum this book up in three words, it would fast-paced, captivating, and unpredictable!” Sieni A.M, renowned author of Ilumine Her. “Amazing, great, fantastic, emotional and even stronger than the first book. Lani did an amazing job on keeping the story, characters and everything as good (no even better). She has amazing talent that shines through the pages and keeps you hooked until the very end. I absolutely LOVED it!” A.R Von, Goodreads. “A fantastic read. A lot of twists and turns!” Holly, Goodreads. “A rollercoaster of love, battles and heartache!” Vanessa, Goodreads. “This is one of my absolute favorite series'. It joins the ranks of the greats like Twilight and The Hunger Games. I could read it over and over again. Trust me, if you haven't given this series a shot, you are missing out.” Sherre Copeland, Reviewer at Beckoned By Books.

This book is finished - such a huge relief to say that! It took me two weeks of intense writing, locking myself away in the cave and basically ignoring the children to tie up all the loose ends and finish the final chapters. This book just did not want to end. There are underlying plot and storylines that kept screaming for me to tkae them further...'pick me!' I also found this one way harder to write. I worried whether people would be disappointed. Whether Daniel and Leila were getting too "steamy" as their relationship progresses...so many worries! I'm very conscious of the fact that many people are looking forward to reading this book and I hope they find it worth the wait.

There's some new characters which Im very intrigued by because they come to the book with messy troubled histories and we don't get to see everything about them revealed in this book because they take over the third book...I've opened Telesa up to have a more Pacific element to it with this book, not just Samoan. We have Keahi, a new character from Hawaii. We meet a Tongan Telesa Sisterhood and their Covenant Keeper. And there's hints of just how far the Telesa gift goes when it comes to geographical location.

The book is now with my editor. She will work her magic on it and get it back to me in another couple of weeks. Then I get to fix up the messy bits she's identified, format it for print and send it to the printer. Printing takes two weeks for NZ, Aust and the Pacific but USA readers will have print copies available to them within a few days of submission. The book will only come out in a print version. We are planning launch parties for Auckland and Samoa, possibly American Samoa. I would love to see this book launched in other places, so if you know there are lots of people in your area that are looking forward to 'When Water Burns' - then message me and let's see if we can work something out. The first ten books that roll off the printing press have the names of the Brisbane Telesa Organizing Committee on them in huge thanks and recognition of their hard work for the Brisbane Launch of Telesa. I am also compiling a list of book bloggers/media people who would be interested in advance reviewing a copy of 'When Water Burns' on their sites/media outlets. If that's you, please message me.

Thank you everyone for your encouragement during the writing process. I continue to be overwhelmed by reader response to the Telesa book and so grateful for all the help from those who have done so much to take this book to a wider audience.

WATCH THE AWESOME TRAILER HERE!!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LDY7i...

In the words of Simone, a DALASHIOUS sequel to Telesa: The Covenant Keeper. If I were to sum this book up in 3 words, it would be: fast-paced, captivating, and unpredictable!

Once again, Lani delivers a unique story that embraces Pacific mythology and balances it well with contemporary life in Samoa. Spanning several countries with many POVs, exciting new revelations, and action packed with twists and turns, the plot extends and matures together with the characters.

This is a darker novel which addresses sensitive and taboo subjects in the Pacific, namely abuse and sex. Lani handles this well. But while it is darker than its predecessor, it has its occasional bouts of humor which had me laughing out loud.

Daniel and Leila's relationship matures as they learn to trust and communicate with  each other. I love how yin/yang their relationship is developing. Daniel is sensible, level-headed, and grounded, while Leila still has her edge but whose character has warmed and has absorbed all the right elements of a Samoan woman (the respect, selflessness, etc.) Keahi is a tortured soul with a heartbreaking past who you can't help but feel compassion for. He adds a fiery dynamic--a "chili spice" lol--to the story and is somewhat of a threat to D&L. He is irrestible and every time he showed up in a scene, I couldn't help but think, this is going to get interesting.

And that ending? I did NOT see that coming. It is revving up to be one heck of a show down in "The Bone Bearer". Bring on the last book!!

EEEEE...just got my copy! Can't wait to read it! SO EXCITED!

Update: *Groans* oh man what just happened... "That moment when you finish a book, look around, and realise that everyone is just carrying on with their lives as though you didn't just experience emotional trauma at the hands of a paperback"...oh yea that's totally me right now. I know I am going to feel a book hangover tomorrow. For those who are not familiar with the term it is the inability to start a new book because you're still living in the last book's world...yea that's totally me too.

I planned to take this book slow...savour the story because this was a book I have been waiting to read FOR AGES and I will admit I squealed like a child when I got my copy in the mail...AND THEN I READ IT IN ONE DAY...good one Monica. So here I am recuperating from my traumatic emotional upheaval. This book had everything and more...AND I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN.

I didn't think this series could get better...oh but wait...IT SO DID.

Thank you Lani for introducing me to this amazing story that makes ME PROUD to be a Pacific Islander. Thank you for showing me Lelia and Daniel's love story and thank you for introducing me to Simone (the most amazing person that I wish I was friends with!).

I can't wait to read the next book! Now I just have to survive the wait!

Happy Reading!

After the amazing creation that was Telesa, I was scared the second book wouldn't be able to compete, but let me just say that I'm happy that I was wrong. When water burns deepened my love for this series and makes me think that the author Lani Wendt Young must either be a genius, or have some mutated form of the Telesa gene that allows her to read the minds of her readers and give them exactly what they need.

I loved it I loved it, I loved it. It made me cry, and laugh, and all the other inappropriate things that people stare at you and wonder what on earth that girl's issue is. We see all our favorite characters in this story, of course there's Leila and her ever constant love Daniel. They enter into the normal relationship issues in this book as they balance each of their needs. It all plays out so real. I'm amazed that Lani was able to capture the pure stubbornness that women and men deal with in relationships. We see the surfer sexy god Jason again and what happens with him literally breaks my heart. Simone is here again and all his fa'afafine glory and I grow to love him even more. We even meet some other characters who I grow to love, and hate, and love again. The bad chick Sarona is here too, in all her hateful ways. It surprises me how far she's willing to go for power and makes me just shake my head. The new character, Keahi....is really something. He breaks my heart and gets on my nerves all at the same time. I'm never sure if I want to pull him into my arms and kiss him, or punch him in the face. He's just so frustrating!

There's so much I cant adequately tell you how I feel. I just loved it so much. I said it before and I'll say it again and again. This is one of my absolute favorite series'. It joins the ranks of the greats like Twilight, TMI, and THG. I could read it over and over again. Trust me, if you haven't given this series a shot, you are missing out. When Water Burns is the perfect sequel accompaniment to Telesa in that, where Telesa embraced the flames of passion, love and growth, this story focused on the destruction capabilities of fire. How, without balance, fire cannot be fully controlled and can consume everything. And without sounding too cheesy, It definitely consumed me too. This book will forever hold a place on my bookshelf (and not just because my review of the first book was included in the praise section of this book. Talk about excited? I almost died). Besides the super amazing cover (which you have to check out in person for the full effect) the story is out of this world. I cant imagine another book ever making me feel this way again......except perhaps the final book in the series, The Bone Bearer.

I'm sure you already know my review, but if it wasn't plain with all my excitement I'll just tell you. 5 Big Stars. I cant wait for the next book.

What can I say? I wished the book never ended. And yet I'm not into this type of book. Lani did an amazing job in the first Telesa series and an even outstanding job with this second one.

It took me three days to read the first one (because the life of a mother never ends) and then less than a day to read the second one. I wasn't addicted at all. (smile) I hope the story of Daniel and Leila doesn't end. I think they truly deserve their happy ending in the next edition Lani. (huge smile)

I loved how Lani kept the character of Daniel grounded. In terms of his respect for himself and for Leila. Although they were always into each other but there was a fine line he never crossed because of personal experiences and also the 'good upbringing' from his parents. And I kept laughing at how he never enters her home because they were 'unsupervised.' I could not contain my laughter because that is such a Fa'a Samoan way.

There are many for instance's in this book that reminded me why I am so proud to be a Samoan.

Oh and the book would never be the same without Simone. Love, love, love that character.

Keep up the good work. God bless you and yours.

Though I try to avoid YA books, I would recommend When Water Burns. An easy book to read, I liked this book better than the first. Good character development for Leila, who becomes a lot stronger in both power and personality. I also liked the character of Keahi, who plays a nice contrast to 'perfect' Daniel whose constant comparison to a chunk hunk adonis can get a bit boring. Keahi however proves that imperfect and scarred can still be hot and sexy (much like my fave Zsadist lol). In saying that though, Daniels back story I found to be the best part of this book - moanasina and the power of the ocean and its creatures, loved it! It's refreshing to read a novel from a Samoan author, whose pride of being from Samoa and of Samoan culture is evident throughout. High five for Ms Wendt :)

This book is even better than the first and that book had me singing songs of joy across the living room because I loved it so much. Lani Wendt Young is beyond amazing. Book one ended with a pretty strong ending. No desperate cliff hangers to make you scream at your book, but there was a dangling loose end or two and those loose ends sure started to unravel things and turn into an amazing adventure/mystery while seeing Daniel and Leila both struggling with inner challenges of who they are to each other and who they are as individuals. Once again we have the beautiful back drop of Samoa and a story immersed in the Samoan culture. I am so glad I have the Special Edition of book one because it has recipes and after reading about all of the delicious goodies they were eating, I so need to get in touch with my inner domestic goddess and start making some of them. (I just found out that all of the special edition goodies are in book one now. Yay!!!)

I will say that the prologue was not easy to get through because of the topic being emotionally difficult for pretty much everyone, but it is important and I know why it was there. It needed to be. That being said, it is the reason why I am thinking this book is for mature MA. I read online that the next and final book is due out in April of this year and I can not wait! I will be stalking her FB page (which I just found) and fully expect to be one of the first people to buy it. If you have not read the first book in this series, you really need to before you dive into this one.

Loved the first book and enjoyed the second as well. The only reason I give it 4 1/2 stars is that I'm not really excited about the upcoming emotional torture that is inevitable for Daniel after reading the sample for book 3. But of course I will look forward to reading it with high hopes throughout!

This book comes with a whirlwind of emotions/reactions- from uncontrollable laughter and undeniable satisfaction to pangs of unwelcome sympathy for certain characters. (The UNs are unintentional and so is my unrequited love for the Vasa Loloa Telesa). The following is a list of emotions/reactions that I can guarantee will surface when deeply immersed in Book 2:
(1) Jump in with a stick to beat the crap out of certain perpetrators
(2) Slap a few dumb and selfish moms
(3) LOL at Simone’s dalashiousness. (e.g. Simone to Leila: You already have a man, so you don’t need to shine too much).
(4) Imagine yourself ten sizes smaller and in a Simone creation or MENA dress
(5) Glower inwardly when Keahi ‘s around (You’ll feel sorry for him, love him, hate him, love him again, then threaten to suggest to the author to kill him off).
(6) Agree with Salamasina and feel slight remorse for Leila
(7) Google the lyrics to the Kit Kat jingle and SMH at Daniel’s ridiculous request (or write yourself in the author’s story-begging Daniel to LEAVE Leila for his own good and your well-being;).
(8) Cry, scream, and/or throw the kindle/hardcopy on the floor with complete and utter consternation on your face over the death of . . . (oh come on, like I’m gonna give it away!).
(9) Cheer on Leila and yell out- “You go girl!” when she embraces the inner goddess who doesn’t need a man who wants her to need him.
(10) Reread the part about Daniel’s tattoos glowing/burning over the water
(11) Wide-eyed at the end, wincing at the thought of Leila being . . . (sorry won’t ruin it), and contemplating the course of Book 3 and how WICKED it’s going to be!
(12) Sigh at the thought of Daniel (and then remind yourself/pretend that you’re happily married to a once-upon-a-time Daniel look-alike- but definitely not act alike!—If the latter were true, heck I wouldn’t bother to read a book!).
(13) Wonder if the author's addicted to Diet Coke!
Bottom line-- a MUST read! It will not disappoint!

I actually loved this book more than the first one.(loved the cover too)...maybe because I already knew things from the first book or was just so ready to be back with Leila and Daniel.

We are finally back with Daniel and Leila trying to pick up where the first book left off...except now Daniel is struggling with issues and not sharing with Leila. I loved the continuing of blending of Leila's americanizism with her newfound Samoan life. Leila has better control of her fire but is still struggling with how to be a guardian without losing herself like her mother did. The continuing growth of Daniel and Leila's relationship is wonderful and some of my favorite moments are when one of them is speaking from the heart to the other one. The trust that they give to one another is so sincere and refreshing. These two could be the poster couple on how to build a strong relationship, even though they are not without their problems. There are people from the first book, but we meet new people here. That become important parts of the next plan for both sides.

I really appreciated the non-sugar coating of realistic issues that Lani portrayed in this book. I felt Leila's frustation with Daniel holding back on their intimacies...heck he already died once.

There is plenty of subplots and evil being brewed in the background that comes to a head at the end of the book....just when you think Daniel and Leila can overcome everything even overwhelming opposite gifts, people trying to keep them apart, and death...Lani throws them under the bus again.

I love this series. It takes a lot to keep me interested in YA but this series does it for me. Normally I can read one book in a series and I may or may not get back around to reading the next one.

I love the love between Daniel and Leila. It's one of those loves that you just wish people would leave them alone so they can get on with their life and live happily ever after but time and time again obstacles arise.

I like reading of the complicated lives of the Telesa who seem human but have enough supernatural powers that they are not. They are really elementals but the way they lead their lives and raise their children really goes against nature.

These teens lead very adult lives and I like reading about the culture. At a time when sex is given freely, these kids seem to hold out as long as possible and still respect their elders. It's interesting to watch Daniel try to handle Leila's American ways.

The story has just enough steam to keep you reading and there are just a few curse words like hell. Several new characters were added to this second installment and I can easily see this being a movie but I wouldn't like it if they didn't get it right with the effects and the cast. There were good times with Leila and Daniel but there were also some very hard times...sad times

Amazing, great, fantastic, emotional and even stronger than the first in the Telesa series. Lani did an amazing job on keeping the story, characters and everything as good (no even better) than the last book. She has amazing talent that shines through the pages and keeps you hooked until the very end. I absolutely LOVED it!

Leila has gone through much loss. She has learned a great many things and is putting it all to use in her everyday life. She has matured a lot and now has a great deal of responsibility. She's handling it all with amazing greatness that makes me as a reader very proud.

Daniel is healed up from the fight with Sarona and the covenant sisters. But not without some side effects. He finds out many new things that tell him more about who he is and many answers as to why. He has also matured a great deal and is prepared to take the world head on. Bring it :)

Leila and Daniel will go through a great many scary situations. Some will not turn out the way you expect. But Daniel and Leila complete one another and lend each other strength that's needed to triumph these obstacles. I hope their relationship continues to grow stronger in the next book and they kick evil in the rear.. Permanently!

Hope the next in the series comes out fast. That ending left me balancing on edge and I'm hoping for the best. (I know Lani will not disappoint!)

I read the 1st book in this series in 2015 and described that as "..hot, steamy, sexy...all that in a no sex YA bundle", and this 2nd installment was much the same.
It took me several years to come by the 2nd book in the series (thanks to BookCrossing - this came from hyphen8 as a wishlist RABCK).
A boy of water and a girl of fire, struggling to make a relationship work, this book sucked me in, and I finished it within an afternoon.
Set in Samoa (with a little detour to Tonga) I was able to recall memories of many places mentioned in the book from my time spent living in Apia in 2014.
As much as I say that sci fi and special unearthly powers are not my "thing", I do enjoy this series. But can they have sex already!? I guess I will need to get my hands on book #3 and find out!

Most of us know that sequels don't always live up to the hype that the first one established. With When Water Burns it lives up to and in some ways is better than it's counter part Telesa. Lani has grown with her writing and her character development. I can see this author being a contender with the more main stream authors. When Water Burns is more mature than Telesa in ways because instead of being in high school the kids have moved on to the University and Leila and Daniel even discuss sex. According to Daniel is taboo because in Samoa they don't discuss sex and contraceptives so freely. Who knew? Lani's writing is fast paced. If you don't watch yourself you will keep reading and forget about sleep.
When Water Burns picks up were Telesa left off. The fight has ended with Nafanua and her covenant, the only sister still standing is Sarona. Since Leila lived, Sarona is out to change that outcome. Especially since Leila is now the sole beneficiary of Nafanua's will. One of the things that she inherited was a women's crisis house. One of the occupants is a thirteen year old Teuila with special gifts. Leila tries to befriend her, but with a troubled past and a mistrust of people , she has a hard time gaining Teuila's trust. Enter Keahi, Daniel's padding team rival, stays on in Samoa and offers to help teach self defense to the women at the crisis center. He befriends Teuila because he offers to give her what Leila can not, revenge on those who have wronged her. Lelia knows that there is something up with Keahi. Keahi has hidden powers similar to Leila's. It is rare because there are suppose to be no male Telesa's. Things begin to heat up when Sarona decides get her revenge by using Keahi and Teuila. In order to save everyone and and those she cares about, Leila ends up sacrificing herself. Daniel was able to bring her back to life, but we are left wondering if it was Lelia that came back or Pele the Fire Goddess because of the statement " At Last. I am free. " . I guess we have to wait and read The Bone Bearer to find out.
Daniel as a character has grown. He has come into his own and is not solely defined by Lelia. We learn his back story and how his adoptive mother came to have him. His birth mother was water Telesa, which explains some things that began to happen in the first book and are confirmed in this one. I think that this is only the beginning for him and I hope that his character reaches his full potential by the end of the series.
Keahi is a troubled character. I think that a part of him means well but he still ends up doing wrong. Having been done wrong in his past he has a hard time fitting in and understanding that people are just naturally kind and want to help. With his fire Telesa powers I see him playing a big part in Leila and Daniel's life in the next book. As much as I am a fan of the bad boy this is one that I am not rooting for. I hope that Leila and Daniel stick it out and stay together.
I absolutely love Simone. He is so flamboyant and out here but doesn't care what anyone thinks. Everyone seems to accept him. I like scene in the class where he was trying to get a rise out of Keahi. Simone was hoping to embarrass Keahi but instead his reaction was to wink at Simone. You knew then that Simone had met his match and he was not happy about it.

Overall Thoughts: What can I say I absolutely loved this book. It is an exciting tale that is beautifully written. This book is written for the YA genre but it is mature enough for adults too. I appreciate that Lani keeps the book pretty clean when it comes to language and sexual references. Her writing keeps you on the edge of your seat all the way to the end. Just when you think there won't be a cliff hanger she springs it on you. I can't wait till the final installment is released. I will be sad when this trilogy ends.

The reason for me deciding to read this book was that I had previously read the first book in this trilogy (telesa) and thought it was amazing so I simply had to read this book. Also I honestly think Lani is an amazing writer.

The category on the bingo board that this book completes is "A book written by a New Zealander. I found this category frustrating. I was worried from the beginning of this assignment about this category because I was never really fond of New Zealand writers (no affence), so I knew that finding a book that I enjoyed and was also written by a New Zealand author was going to be a challenge for me. But what made the frustation turn to annoyance for me was the fact that I had no idea the Lani Wendt Young was a New Zealander until my sister told me that she lived in Auckland, New Zealand. So yes, overall a frustrating experience but reawarding in the end because I was able to read an amazing book and get some of my homework done through it.

My favourite part of this book wasn't actually a quote. It was more of a conversation. With that said, my favourite quote was when daniel was proposing to Leila and he said, "I wish I could take you to our special place, Leila. I've already decided that it's the place where I'm going to ask you to marry me. That's right. I said the M word. I've been doing a lot of thinking, sitting here everyday waiting for you to wake up, and I realised that when you find the person that makes you wnat to believe in forever? THen you should hold on to them and never let them go. And yeah, you should even marry them. I think you and I are going to have to face a lot of storms because of what we are. We should face them together. And make every day our forever. Because we don't know how many days we're going to get." Then Leila wakes up and says to him, "Daniel Tahi, are you proposing to a girl who's asleep?"
This was one of my favourite quotes/conversations from this book because you see a side of Daniel that I wasn't expecting to see for atleast a little while longer. I thought that we would only get that kind of thing from Daniel in the next book. So yeah, it was a shock but a good one.

Something new I learnt from this book was that Samoa could actually be developing faster than I thought it was. I know that sounds sad because I myself am Samoan and should've had more faith in my country but to be honest, I couldn'tever really comprehend the fact that people in Samoa could own iphone 4's until I read this book. haha

A charachter that was interesting to me was Keahi, and by interesting I mean annoying. I have always been team Daniel. I never hated Jason though, even when he was showing an obvious interest in Leila and somehow proposed as a threat to Leila and Daniel's relationship. But when Keahi came into the picture, I hated him from the very beginning. I guess it was because he was misterious and he did seem like the more probable companion for Leila. But he was also way too confident and very creepy at times. He was just so hard to figure out so I couldn't get myself to like him or even accept him as a character in the book. (haha, I sound obsessed. Oh well.)

This is the second book in the trilogy and I was hoping it would better written then the first. In the beginning it was. A lot of the grammatical errors I found in the first weren't there and the author's voice seemed to grow up a bit. Then about midway it slowly started going down hill and by 3/4 of the way it was worse. She tried to change narrative style unsuccessfully. Most of the book is from Lelia's perspective and when someone else's story was being told the author would go to third person. At the beginning of the book, it was successful due to it being short bursts and very well transitioned to and from. However in the climax it jarringly switched to third person and back and forth withing between limited third persona and omniscient. The end felt like the author was done with trying to figure out the best way to end it and just wanted to stop writing, as if she no longer completely cared for her characters. Lelia also became more aggravating. In the previous novel she seemed angry, but strong. In this novel she seemed weak and selfish. Due to my curiosity and hope for a better novel, I will probably read the third book when it is released. I am curious about the mythology and did find a little bit of info about the real legends, but was basically told to talk to my elders. That doesn't really work for me as I am not a Pacific Islander, but American with a European ancestry. I really would like to know more about this fascinating culture, so any more information would be appreciated.

I love the storyline of this one better than the first. Aside from a faster read, every time I turn the page I was anticipating something all the time. I think Leila and Daniel’s romance was well written and their love for each other as star-crossed lovers. I really like the other characters too, her friendship with Jason and Simone. I love the suspense build-up as well. It was exhilarating! I felt like I was the one who was nervous for them since Sarona might just show up… I love the other additional characters, they all have their stories especially, Keahi since it added more suspense. The ending was a cliff-hanger but not in a way where I want to throw it. I do certainly hope that the third book will be out soon!!!

Another great read from a very gifted New Zealand/Samoan writer.

The action is aplenty in this second of the Telesa series, with some very interesting relationships developing. I can't wait to see where the author takes them! I'm another fan of Keahi, the poor tortured soul, but like another reviewer mentioned, he's not for Leila. I also particularly enjoyed getting to know Daniel's mother that little bit more. I hope we see more of her in the third book.

All I can say is, I'm so glad Lani got her new writing cave because I want her to get out there and write her little heart out! :)

This was definitely an interesting twist to the series. The new characters and the new romances were shocking, but you somewhat new they were coming. Thank God for that, because if I didn't see any of it coming, I would probably be really pissed by the ending of the book. However, I loved this story from the very beginning, and I will continue to love it! [: I'm glad there's only three books. I don't think I could take it if this story continued unnecessarily like many other books I've read. Plus, with there being only three books, my hope that Leila will pull through stays alive.

Btw, I loved that Lesina, after everything, stay trued to her heart.

You know how the second book in a series usually falls just shy or pancake flat after the first book? This one totally didn't (:

I love finding new books that draw a reader in, books that make it tough to put down for even the most basic of necessities...like sleeping. Lani's book are that good :) Humorous, engaging, and enticing. I found myself delving into the Samoan culture because the books made me want to understand more.

Thanks Lani!

I loved the first book but I actually think that the second was better. I liked the character Keahi and thought that the second was more mature. This is an awesome series and I can't wait for the third to come out! :)

This was a good read! I'm probably one of the only one out there that really like Keahi. Maybe not for Leila. Leila should be with Daniel. But I'll take the bad-boy Keahi any day :P

I know i should be reading more serious books, but this series is so much fun. I smashed through this, and can't wait for the last one.

When Water Burns is the second book in the Telesa series by Lani Wendt Young. Loosely based on Polynesian legends, the series is about Leila and Daniel’s discovery of their telesa powers and the complicated alliances and challenges that come from having gifts of fire and water.

One of the great storylines in this book is the will they/won’t they molten fire dance of desire between Leila and Daniel. It’s a great example of a mature and realistic approach to acknowledging and dealing with those overwhelming feelings of new love. Too often fiction assumes that teens have no control or boundaries when it comes to intimacy. It’s also refreshing that it’s Daniel who has the strong moral code based on his grandparents’ traditional Samoan family values.

But When Water Burns is much more than a my-true-love’s-a-fire-goddess-which-threatens-my-own-masculinity tale. The Big Bads in book 1 haven’t been entirely defeated and a few new ones are introduced. Themes about the need to care for the earth and nature being out of balanced are further explored in a race to recover a lost nuclear device, and while readers hope that Leila and Daniel are destined to be together forever, it’s not smooth sailing. As much as she loves Daniel, Leila’s gifts might have something else in mind when Keahi paddles his canoe along Samoa’s shores, voyaging far from his Hawaiian home.

Lani takes us swimming in the deep end with her explorations of belonging, violence against women, gender inequality, and taking charge of one’s own life, but it’s all handled with a deftly light touch that doesn’t feel forced or preachy. Simone’s back and fiercer than ever with a wit and wisdom that keeps the story humming.

Although it’s a complete story, readers are going to want to read Telesa: The Covenant Keeper and I am Daniel Tahi, a companion novella before When Water Burns. Good thing the third book, The Bone Bearer is now available. You won’t believe what happens next!

When Water Burns brings you back to the story of Leila and her journey as "fire goddess." The story picks up after the first one when Leila must return home to see her grandmother as she has had another stroke. Leila must learn to accept her new life and protect those she loves against any threats.

This is a wonderful story of a strong female character who learns that in loving someone sometimes you have to let yourself rely on them and let them feel needed. Daniel is one of the best male leads that I have ever read. He is stong but loving to a fault and it is so easy to identify with him and know the true goodness that is him. The story does a great job on taking you on the journey that Leila and Daniel are on together.

The introduction of Keahi adds new twists and dynamics that really add to the story. I really enjoyed this book but I have to say after reading the ending and the teaser for the next book I am very nervous. I love Leila for who she is and I really love her and Daniel together. I am afriad I will not be able to take what may be to come.

This follow-up to "The Covenant Keeper" is as least, if not more, engrossing at its predecessor. Leila returns to Samoa, this time a stronger, more mature and more independent woman than the one who first made the journey to the island shores. However, she is still her hot-tempered, stubborn self and still flares up at the least provacation (although not it is more emotionally, rather than literally). The courtship between her and Daniel continues to be sweet, even if he can be a brick-headed chunk hunk at times. Simone comes more to the front in this novel, taking the role of "flamboyant best friend". However, aside from these formulaic moves, the plot has a freshness absent in many teen paranormal-style novels, the folklore behind the Telesa and their convenants is more fully explained, and the delightfully lyrical nature of the writing immerses one fully in the humidity of tropical Samoa.

I look forward to reading the final volume!
