To whom the Swiss critic of globalization should not yet be familiar, this essential compulsory reading is highly recommended.
It should be noted in advance that I will repeat the first two paragraphs and the last paragraph in this and all other reviews to Ziegler books. This is because the books are composed of small, not always coherent short chapters that do not give an overall organic picture. Therefore, and because I consider the proven facts to be crucial and noteworthy, I have decided to take the unconventional step of condensing some of the essential points in brief sentences.
Should you, therefore, decide to read another of my reviews on Jean Ziegler's work, for which I would like to thank you in advance with my most binding thanks, I would ask you to begin with the reading two paragraphs below.
He is not without reason one of the most controversial and prominent torchbearers against neoliberalism. As UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food an expert on the topic, no one else can denounce the issues better than him. A prosecutor and admonisher who, despite numerous legal proceedings, never tired to continue the fight, whose writings are nowhere near as widespread and well-known as they deserve.
Since the subject is known and repressed, I will compress a few facts from the book to encourage reading pleasure or, more suitable, reading dread. First of all, it should be noted that exaggeration, polemics, and exaggeration of hard facts are part of Ziegler's regular trade and that they are water on the mills of his critics.

Ich habe mich daher und weil ich die belegten Tatsachen als sehr wichtig und erwähnenswert erachte, zu dem unkonventionellen Schritt entschieden, in kurzen Sätzen komprimiert ein paar der wesentlichen Fakten zusammenzutragen. It is hard to find the right words to describe this book. Ziegler does not hold back in naming and shaming the people and corporations responsible for the majority of world hunger. To understand the complicity of governments and the world financial community in the starvation of millions is to really have the blindfold taken off. I now know that every 5 seconds a child in the world dies of hunger. I also now know that taxing the richest 1300 people in the world 2% could save every single one of them. Finally; I also now know that we as a species have chosen money over each other and that people will continue to starve while there is a profit to be made. This is a tough read but very much a necessary one.

Dirán que si subo a las redes sociales una foto de un niño desnutrido para denunciar el hambre en el mundo, ésta sea innecesaria, que ya se sabe que hay hambre en el mundo, que no hace falta ser tan explícito. La verdad es que no dudo de que se sepa que hay hambre, pero ¿se sabe el por qué? Acabo de terminar el libro 'Destrucción masiva: Geopolítica del hambre' de Jean Ziegler, quien fue Relator Especial de ONU para el Derecho a la Alimentación entre 2000 y 2008, y considero que este sistema está más putrefacto de lo que ya pensaba. La alimentación como actividad económica es la degeneración de un liberalismo económico que es la principal causa de los males de nuestro mundo. La pobreza tiene solución. El hambre tiene solución. Pero los defensores del librecambio y sus políticas genocidas se encargan de perpetuar este sistema demente.

Supongo que nadie comparte estas desgracias, pero la verdad es que somos todos responsables. Intentamos socorrer a los necesitados, hacemos donaciones, incluso apadrinamos niños para intentar darles una vida digna, pero en ningún momento nos planteamos abolir la miseria e invertir en erradicar la causa que produce la enfermedad. El problema emane del gran capital financiero internacional, que pretende que la mano invisible del mercado sea la única y suprema autoridad de nuestras vidas.
No es descabellado decir que si un niño que muere de hambre hoy, muere asesinado. ¿Qué ocurre cuándo la mayor parte de la tierra cultivable es expropiada de los campesinos y se venden a multinacionales de la alimentación? ¿Qué sucede cuándo los especuladores introducen la alimentación entre sus juegos financieros? ¿Qué pasa cuándo los poderes económicos OMC, FMI, Banco Mundial y los países occidentales se aprovechan de la miseria de millones de personas y hacen negocio con sus vidas? La respuesta es esa foto.

This is one of those incredibly important books that not enough people will read.
Ziegler will tell a blunt but heartfelt story (what I mean to say is there is no cliché tugging at heartstrings, the anecdotes are crushing without any need for pandering) and then provide the numbers and quotations. The latter is likely where some of the reviews talking about the dryness of the writing comes from. Truthfully I don't see it. I found it very readable, if straight-laced.
There are a couple graphs, a few numbers here and there. Don't let that put you off. This is an important and scary book that you should read if you are at all interested in food, poverty, geopolitics or famine.

Une lecture bouleversante mais nécessaire pour prendre conscience de la gravité de la situation alimentaire de millions de personnes dans le monde aujourd’hui.
C’est un cri d’alarme pour réveiller nos consciences.
Jean Ziegler habilement pointe la responsabilité dans ces tragédies humaines: celles des conglomérats agro-alimentaires mais également des organismes internationaux tels que l’OMS,le FMI ou la BANQUE MONDIALE; sans oublier les gouvernements corrompus dans beaucoup de pays du sud et la connivence des gouvernements des pays occidentaux.
Par ailleurs il démonte les discours déculpabilisants qui invoquent la loi du marché et le sélection ou régulation naturelle et qui n’a rien de naturel ni d’humain.
Le message le plus important c’est que la faim et la malnutrition ne sont pas des fléaux invincibles et que l’humanité a les moyens aujourd’hui d’y mettre fin.

This is a bit of a strange book; part essay collection, part non-fiction, and part memoir. I couldn't help but feel the book is in dire need of an editor. Its not that Ziegler doesn't have interesting observations, but they are wandering and disorganized, jumping haphazardly between subjects and chronology, and many anecdotes that don't always seem relevant. I almost wish this was just a memoir on the subject of his interest, because I don't doubt that he would have interesting observations based on his career working in the UN system.

De bonnes critiques en particulier à l’encontre des bio carburants mais dans l’ensemble une sur critique qui ne reconnaît nul part les progrès accomplis dans la lutte contre la malnutrition. On pourrait faire beaucoup mieux, c’est sûr mais l’impression reste celle d’un livre écrit à fleur de peau, qui ne propose au final pas vraiment de solutions sinon celle de se battre contre l’égoïsme.

Around 700 million people in the world face hunger today. So it’s hard to be so critical about a book adamant on solving world hunger, but the writing is organizationally confusing and incoherent. It’s separated into microchapters that sporadically and stochastically list statistics, graphs, biology, environmentalism, geopolitical history and personal anecdotes jumping around the globe in matter of paragraphs:

Dieses Buch übertrifft wirklich alle Erwartungen.
„Wir lassen sie verhungern“ ist ein typischer Ziegler. Wer ihn schon mal in einer Talkshow gesehen hat, der weiß, wovon ich rede. Man erwartet beim Lesen viel Dogmatismus, Populismus, Polemik, Angst, indifferente Analysen, verdrehte Tatsachen und alterative Fakten. Aber so viel von allem auf einmal hätte ich dann doch nicht für möglich gehalten.
Vom Titel her könnte man meinen, dass Ziegler erklärt, wie u. a. das Fiat-Geld-System globale Megakonzerne durch den Cantillion-Effekt auf Kosten einfacher Bauern bereichert; wie die EU-Landwirtschaftssubventionen afrikanische Landwirtschaftsbetriebe ausboten; wie sich korrupte Politiker an der Entwicklungshilfe bereichern und die Entwicklungshilfe ohnehin die Menschen in die erlernte Abhängigkeit treibt und wie das alles eigentlich der Öffentlichkeit bekannt ist, sie aber gekonnt wegschaut, während europäische Politiker sich an den Problemen bereichern und sie sogar unterstützen.
Davon liest man aber nichts. Ziegler hüllt den Mantel des Schweigens über die wichtigsten Ursachen des globalen Hungers (und die allerwichtigsten leugnet er sogar). Wovon man aber liest, ist, dass Jean-Ziegler erster UN-Sonderbeauftragter für das Recht auf Nahrung war. Im Wesentlichen schreibt er über nichts anderes. Dass er diese Stellung innehatte, erwähnt er gefühlt auf jeder fünften Seite. Das Buch ist auch nichts anderes als eine Aneinanderreihung von Anekdoten und Erlebnissen, die er in dieser Tätigkeit erlebt hat, angereichert mit historischen Ausführungen zu dem geschilderten. Bei all seinen Beschreibungen wird nie klar, wieso „wir“ Schuld am Hungertod von Millionen Menschen sein sollen.
Zielger muss dies aber auch gar nicht ausführen. Denn auf der ersten Seite macht Ziegler gleich klar: Es gibt ein Recht auf Nahrung. Wer also an Hunger stirbt, wird getötet. Keine Erklärung. Wieso es dieses Recht geben sollte, wie mit vielfältigen negativen Konsequenzen eines solchen Rechtes umzugehen sei und wie konkret die Verteilung der Nahrung vonstattengehen soll, wird freilich auch nicht erläutert. Es hört sich ja auch soooo schön an und die Zielgruppe des Buches – die akademische Mittelschicht – soll sich schließlich gut fühlen, wenn sie das Buch liest und nicht selbst denken. Ziegler bleibt seinem Motto 'Polemik statt Antworten' treu. Und so ist sich der Sozialdemokrat Ziegler auch nicht zu schade, noch mal eben schnell die Bibel zu missbrauchen, um seine Positionen klarzumachen. Philosophisch gesehen ist seine Idee so ausgebrannt wie Dresden ’45. Intelektuelle Ehrlichkeit habe ich in diesem Buch nach dem Lesen von Seite 1 nicht mehr erwartet. Sonst gibt es vor allem Zieglers ungebremsten Hass auf den freien Markt in diesem Buch: Wenn Menschen mit Nahrung Geld verdienen wollen, ist das böser Neoliberalismus. Dass die Liberalisierung der Märkte in Ost- und Südostasien Milliarden Menschen seit dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges von Hunger und Armut befreit hat, wird dann auch gekonnt in diesem Buch nicht mehr erwähnt. Genauso wenig wie Afrika, Venezuela, Kuba und Indien mit dem Einsatz von sozialer und politischer Kontrolle der Märkte den Hunger in ihren Ländern nur verstärkten. Aber Hauptsache irgendwas mit bösen Kapitalisten. Daher braucht es dann nach Ziegler ein Recht auf Nahrung, damit die Nahrung gerecht verteilt werden kann. Dass Nahrung erst mal produziert werden muss, scheint für Ziegler kein Problem zu sein. Irgendwie ist schon Nahrung da, um sie zu verteilen. Er leugnet quasi, dass es Ressourcenknappheit gibt. Dass man dem Hunger mit einer Produktionssteigerung beikommen muss, wischt er mit einem müden Lächeln zur Seite. Für ihn ist Hunger ein Verteilungsproblem, welches nur (!) das Recht auf Nahrung vernünftig beheben kann. Hunger ist auf gar keinen Fall der Ausgangszustand des Menschen, den es durch eine effiziente Nutzung von Ressourcen zu überwinden gilt. Wie genau wird dann die Produktion und Verteilung von Nahrungsmitteln organisiert, wenn es erstmal dieses Recht gibt? Natürlich keine Antwort von Ziegler.
Passend zum Rest des Buches ist Zieglers Kritik an globalen Megakonzernen so oberflächlich, man ist fast geneigt Monsanto und co. zu verteidigen. Etwas Sinnvolles wie deren Zerschlagung kommt Ziegler dann aber auch nicht in den Sinn. Etwas Verstaatlichung hier und etwas mehr Regulationen dort wünscht sich Ziegler. Aber auf gar keinen Fall soll diesen Unternehmen die Chance genommen werden, weiter mit ihrem Lobbyismus die Gesetzgebung zu beeinflussen.

Je savais qu'en m'attaquant à ce livre je m'exposais à un sujet douleureux et déprimant. Je me suis donc dit que les vacances étaient le moment opportun pour le lire et contrebalancer la sinistrose qui accompagne sa lecture! Même préparer et même dans les meilleures conditions possibles, cette lecture ne peut laisser de marbre!
Cette seconde lecture de Jean Ziegler, après la haine de l'occident, m'a consterné et révolté. Il commence par une première partie classiquement en définissant ce qu'est la malnutrition (micro et macronutriment) et ses conséquences pathologigiques. Je connaissais déjà la maladie de l'enfant au gros ventre appelé aussi Kwashiorkor résultant d'une sous alimentation en protéine. En revanche, j'ignorais la maladie appelé noma. Celle ci résulte d'un effondrement du système immunitaire provoqué par la malnutrition. Cet effondrement entraine une prolifération des bactéries buccales normalement inoffensives. Ces dernières digèrent les muqueuses et les tissus mous du visage! C'est horrible (faites un tour sur google image en tapant noma si vous avez l'estomac bien accroché).
Après toute l'horreur qu'entraine la malnutrition, l'auteur s'attaque à ceux qui la génèrent et qui en profite! En vrac, nous avons les producteurs agrocarburants, le FMI, la banque mondiale, les tradders...
Le plus révoltant selon moi c'est le double discours que nos politiques ( les politiques des pays industrialisés), souhaitant le développement des pays pauvres mais faisant tout pour qu'ils ne restent. Une stratégie couramment utilisée est l'inondation d'un marché par un produit subventionné sur un marché étranger. Un exemple, la vente d'oranges de Floride subventionnées en Haiti cassant les prix du marché et détruisant la production locale. Une fois détruite, les pays sont dépendants des importations et les prix peuvent augmenter! A ces techniques d'appauvrissment, il faut également ajouter la spéculation sur les denrées alimentaires, la réquisition des sols arables pour produire des agrocarburants finalement plus polluant que le carburant seul, les guerres, les conditions climatiques...
Avant cette lecture, j'avais une mauvaise opinion du capitalisme, à présent j'en suis sûr, le capitalisme ne joue pas en faveur des Hommes mais bien pour quelques un contre tous les autres! Un capitaliste ne peut s'émouvoir de la misère du monde puisqu'il la génère lui-même.
Selon moi, il y a des domaines dans lesquels le libéralisme économique ne doit pas être permis et notamment dans l'alimentation. D'ailleurs, le droit à l'alimentation existe bel et bien dans la charte des droits de l'Homme mais malheureusement, il est le plus bafoué de tous. Même si ce livre est quelque peu déprimant, il ouvre les yeux et les consciences!
Je finirais en paraphrasant ce livre: sur une planète abritant 7 milliards d'êtres humains, un Homme qui meurt de malnutrition alors qu'il est possible d'en nourrir 12 milliards, c'est un meurtre!

In a recent announcement, the United Nations proudly reported that world hunger had decreased. However, their statistics failed to note that every five seconds, a child dies of starvation. Jean Ziegler exposes details about the far-reaching effects of hunger that have been unrecognized by the global population.
Political unrest in many parts of the world is only one of the problems. Afraid that relief could fall into the wrong hands, governments have placed sanctions on imports that could alleviate some of the suffering. Instead, whole populations are left without hope. In addition, production of biofuels has begun to greatly influence Agribusiness, since the income from biofuels far outweighs the income from products produced for consumption.
Climate is also an issue that has largely been ignored. Subtle climate changes in the Andes Mountains have created massive ice melts, resulting in a shortage of water for irrigation. Afraid that relief could fall into the wrong hands, governments have placed sanctions on imports that could alleviate some of the suffering. Instead, whole populations are left without hope. In addition, production of biofuels has begun to greatly influence Agribusiness, since the income from biofuels far outweighs the income from products produced for consumption.
Climate is also an issue that has largely been ignored. Subtle climate changes in the Andes Mountains have created massive ice melts, resulting in a shortage of water for irrigation. Betting on Famine: Why the World Still Goes Hungry is a nonfiction novel brilliantly written by Jean Ziegler, a worldwide leading food expert. He outlines how an outburst of starvation and and worldwide food insecurity changes from growing food to growing fuel. He describes in layman terms the complex global causes of the recent hunger crisis; the government’s support to the production of bio-fuels contributes to world hunger. In the book it states, “The tank of a mid sized car holds roughly thirteen gallons. To make thirteen gallons of ethanol, almost eight hundred pounds of corn have to be destroyed. With eight hundred pounds of corn, a Mexican or Zambian child can get enough to eat for one year.” With extensive research and investigations, Ziegler found that energy production has rerouted millions of acres of corn, soy, wheat, and other grain crops from food consumption products to fuel products. As a result, food supply sprout prices to record highs. The novel relates to my topic on starvation/hunger and malnutrition in third world countries because it details other causes of starvation and hunger in the world. For Ziegler, food shortages are made up as a result of human political choices for a “safer” environment rather than natural causes. The increase of bio-fuel production is done by the burning of millions of food products every year, which could be used to feed the starved. The author insists that bio-fuels are contradictory since it contributes to global warming by increasing the release of carbon dioxide. Altogether, the novel informs about the politics of food and further unravels what prevents us from feeding the world’s children.

Der Hunger auf der Welt ist ein riesiges Problem, das gerade in unseren Gebieten schnell ausgeblendet wird. In den Erst Welt Ländern leben wir im Luxus, werfen Nahrung weg und werden Fett. Wenige hunderte Kilometer weiter aber verenden Kinder, Erwachsene und ganze Bevölkerungen wegen Mangel an Nahrungsmittel. Jean Ziegler, erster UN-Sonderberichterstatter für das Recht auf Nahrung, bricht als einer der Wenigen das Schweigen und zeigt in diesem Buch die aktuellen Zustände auf.
"Wir lassen sie verhungern" ist eine provokante und anprangernde Schrift. Immer ungemütlich und oft polemisch. Wenn man das Buch liest wird man wütend und traurig, verliert vielleicht sogar die Hoffnung in das Geschöpf Mensch. Aber trotzdem, das Buch ist wichtig und zwingend. Ziegler erklärt darin nicht nur das Problem und die aktuelle Lage, sondern deckt auf, dass einfache Lösungsansätze schon lange vorhanden wären, aber durch politische und wirtschaftliche Machenschaften verhindert werden. Dabei sind nicht nur die Spekulanten und korrupten Führer die Übeltäter, sondern auch die UNO und die Hilfsorganisationen. Solange Kapitalismus und Profit regiert, wird sich dieser Zustand nicht ändern.
Was mir an dieser "Streitschrift" aber fehlt, sind die Lösungsansätze. Gerade Ziegler hätte ein enorm fundiertes Wissen um im Buch helfende Szenarien aufzuzeigen und Menschen zu Tätigkeiten zu animieren- doch dies fehlt. Bleibt nur zu hoffen, dass die Entwicklung des Wachstums und der Profitgier endlich abnimmt und ein Ende findet. Ansonsten seh ich schwarz für die Menschheit.

Jean Ziegler parvient à expliquer de façon très imagée les causes, et surtout les conséquences de la faim dans le monde. Son discours est constitué d'anecdotes, et il bâtit ses arguments avec un bel équilibre de séquences descriptives/parfois émotives, et de séquences factuelles basées sur des statistiques fiables.
Les aspects du livre que j'ai le plus appréciés:
1. L'explication et l'utilisation de termes précis pour définir la faim (faim structurelle vs faim conjoncturelle, par exemple), ce qui aide à comprendre le problème au lieu d'y être seulement sensibilisé.
2. Le style d'écriture de Mr. Ziegler qui nous fait voyager et qui nous immerge dans sa réalité lors des missions qu'il a effectuées pour l'ONU. La lecture est donc non seulement informative, mais aussi agréable.
3. La lumière portée sur certains faits historiques, particulièrement en ce qui a trait aux répercussions du "plan faim" d'Hitler, et aux accomplissements de Josué de Castro (incluant sa participation à la fondation de la FAO).
4. La démystification de l'impuissance des organisations internationales face à la faim dans le monde vu de l'interne.
5. Le focus sur 2 causes majeures de la faim (la spéculation, et l'utilisation de plantes nourricières pour la production de biocarburant), ce qui incite à l'action au lieu de susciter un sentiment d'impuissance face à un problème aussi complexe et d'aussi grande envergure.

Hunger is a problem we can solve. The nations, banks and multinational are the cause of hunger. We have enough food to feed everybody in the world. Each kid dying of hunger is a murdered kid.
Powerful countries or companies steal the earth from poor counties, paying about nothing, creating nearly no jobs and the one they create are as good than slavery.
To create 40L of agrofuel you have to burn the food of a kids for a year, we waste a lot of water, and pollute, because by burning them add CO2 in the environment.
This book made me angry and want to do something, now need to find what I can do to fight this injustice, maybe it starts by informing you and make you read the book.

Another super-scary book with a hint of hope: in summary, the world is ruled by a horde of criminals who become richer and more powerful as they kill more and more people: they restrict access to food, use the land to create bio-fuels instead of food, keep entire communities isolated, without access to water or food, etc. Will it be possible to stop them? Well, it will be very difficult, but maybe not entirely impossible.

Excellent treatise on the behind-the-scenes politics that are causing, increasing, and failing to solve the worldwide problem of suffering from lack of food access, with sobering reports on the resulting death, disease, hunger...and wasted human potential. Mr. Ziegler provides personal examples from his years as the UN Rapporteur on the Right to Food, and updated statistics behind the global waste and destruction of food and agricultural resources.

If I have to critisize anything aboutthis book, it is the frequent polemical choice of words - not because this is uncalled for, given the topic, butbecause, sadly, it makes it easy for the author's enemies to accuse him (once more) of a lack of professionalism and, by consequence, credibility. And that would be a great shame.

Jean Ziegler ist es wunderbar gelungen, die wirklichen Verbrecher dieser Welt zu entlarven, und den Leser dabei auf die ungleiche Nahrungsverteilung in dieser Welt aufmerksam zu machen. Ein Buch, das schockiert, aber auch motiviert, seine eigene Stimme zu erheben gegen diesen Wahnsinn.

Excellent coverage of the topic. The good news is that we've made some progress against hunger. However, because the world's population keeps growing, there are more people among the desperately hunger.
And the same people who trashed the world economy have discovered speculation in food crops and the lands that grow them as another focus of their greed. This should make everyone boiling mad.
