Yu Jin is an orphan, who was raised by wolves in the desert before a Han living with a Xiongnu tribe takes her back to camp. She soon becomes friends with Xiongnu children, including Yu Dan, Yi Zhi Xie and Mu Da Duo.One year later, due to political changes, her foster father is killed. His only wish was for her to return to his hometown Chang'an, in the Han Dynasty. Thus, Yu Dan tried to help her flee the Xiongnu territory, but soon found out that Yi Zhi Xie, the new clan leader, had sent soldiers in hot pursuit of them.

To save Yu Jin, Yu Dan persuades her to stay in the wild desert and return to the wolf pack she had grown up with,while he keeps going, leading the soldiers on a wild goose chase. Years later, a teenage Yu Jin meets the disabled Meng Jiu (Meng Xi Mo),who was part of a traveling merchant's caravan, and then saves and meets Huo Qu Bing (under the alias of Xiao Huo) and his comrades while they were fleeing the desert bandits on the way back to Chang'an.

Yu Jin introduced herself as Jin Yu remembered her foster father's last wish and asked for some traveling money from Huo Qu Bing as repayment. Huo Qu Bing gives her the money, but then requests that she lead them out of the desert. Jin Yu didn't know then that Xiao Huo was actually the Han general Huo Qu Bing. After leading them out of the desert, she sets off towards Chang'an by herself....(from Wikipedia)

Ren Haiyan, known by her pen name Tong Hua or Zhang Xiao San, was born in 1982. She is one of the most famous contemporary romance novelists in China.

She graduated from Peking University and came to America in 2005. She currently lives in New York. In 2013, Hua co-wrote the television series Perfect Couple, which is currently in production.

I wanna thank Koala's Playground for translating this Chinese novel to english.

This is about Jin Yu's life. She is from Xiongnu (from Mongolian Dynasty) when she bumped into General Huo Qu Bing (Han). They fell in love and trapped at the politics in Han because Huo Qu Bing is the nephew of the Emperor. He was born out of wedlock. But he is so sweet and horny. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. I loved him. Tong Hua is a great writer. Anyway, this is a HEA! not her typical novels that have a sad ending like Bu Bu Jing Xin(Startling by Each Step) and Yun Zhong Ge(Song In the Clouds. And also her novels are from Chinese History. She based her heroes by the historical figures from China.

This is surely one of my favorites.

I LOVE this book.

All I have to say is throw all your misconceptions about translated historical fiction out the door and give this book a chance. I read a wonderful English fan-translation over at a blog I follow but I was really hesitant to start because I've never really read any Chinese historical fiction in the Romance genre before and I have a problem with translations when it comes to books (too much is lost in translation and it is so hard to get into them most of the time).

Well, let's just say I was pleasantly surprised. The story is great (with a fantastic narrating heroin), the characters are entertaining and heartwarming, and the translation is easy to get used to. I also fell head-over-heals for Huo Qu Bing (how could you not?)!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!

[On a random note, I'm not nearly as excited for the upcoming live-action drama adaptation. I don't approve of the cast at all. Bummer...]

Once in a while you read a book and that simply compels you to start writing about it. Da Mo Yao is this kind of book. Rarely has a story left such an impact on me this did. I am moved occasionally by a well written book but never has a book left me bawling in my room. Yes, that’s the impact this book had on me. Let me start from the beginning.

Da Mo Yao is a Chinese novel written by famous writer, Tong Hua. She is immensely popular in China and many of her other books have been made into TV series. Unfortunately, I can’t read even the C of Chinese but a blogger (A Koala’s Playground) whom I follow, decided to translate the book word to word from Chinese to English.

Yu Jin is an orphan who has grown up amongst a pack of wolves in the Gobi Dessert. One day when she is 8 years old, she is recused by a Han civilian who tries to teach her how to be a human. However she grows up in a Xiong Nu settlement, the enemies of the Han Kingdom. One day due to political reason her adoptive father dies and she is again forced to leave the lives of human and go back to being a wolf again. But one day she decided to fulfil her dead father’s wish to go back to the Han Kingdom and live as a Han citizen. On her way to the Han city Chang’An she meets two fellow travellers, Meng Jiu and Xiao Huo.



She safely arrives at Chang’An and meets them again but it turns out that Meng Jiu is the heir to a vast business enterprise in the city and Xiao Huo is the famous Han warrior, Huo Qu Bing. Hence slowly the story unfolds and we get to her how her romance unfolds with both the guys who are so viscerally different from each other but affect Yu Jin so deeply.

Yu Jin is one of the strongest heroines I have read about in any romantic story. This story is set in 200BC but Yu Jin’s wit, intelligence and adaptively never fails to amaze me. She is a wolf girl yet she is sensible and yet passionate. Tong Hua managed to create a heroine who is not only relatable but fun too. She has so much determination that is she sets her mind on something, and then she will follow it till the end.

Meng Ju was a loyal, quiet brooding character who was crippled from childhood. Burdened by his responsibilities and his position he can quietly supports Yu Jin and everything.



Huo Qu Bing is one of my favourite romance heros. Ever. He was passionate, wild, endearing, charming and everything a girl could ask for. Huo Qu Bing was a force to be reckoned with. In fact he is real life Han Dynasty General who is celebrated throughout China even today. Therefore all the wars and conquests described in the story are real life historical event even is the romance is fictional.
Yes, there is a love triangle but at no point was Yu Jin being stupid or irrational with her feeling so it was not annoying in the least. She had two men who loved her, one who was the quiet protector who loves her from afar, steadfast and loyal. And on the other hand you have the charming, boisterous, funny and passionate Huo Qu Bing.

The story is obviously has many political plot lines intertwined with the story but they was not boring in the least and were intrinsic with the plot.

I cannot recommend this book enough. I never thought I’d like it so much. I took a chance and it paid off. The writing is beautiful and I can only imagine what the original text would be like if the translation was beautiful. This book opens up many horizons and made me realise that I don’t have to limit myself to only the English Language books.

This book is a must read for any romance novel fan who wants to try something different. If I’m able to get even one person to try this book, I believe that this post is a success.

Mặc dù bộ sách này hay, nhưng thật sự là mình không còn nhận ra Đồng Hoa mà mình thích nữa. Đồng Hoa qua Bộ bộ kinh tâm hay Bí Mật Bị Thời Gian Vùi Lấp là một ngòi bút vô cùng sắc sảo, khác hẳn những thiên tiểu thuyết ngôn tình Trung Quốc khác. Không rõ sự khác biệt nằm ở bản gốc hay là do dịch thuật, nhưng mình cảm thấy Đại Mạc Dao chẳng còn cái nét khác biệt ấy nữa, mà nhạt nhòa cũng giống như bao câu chuyện khác, thứ mà mình dễ dàng quên đi sau một thời gian ngắn nữa thôi. Mình vẫn vô cùng thích cách Đồng Hoa lồng ghép lịch sử vào câu chuyện, thích hơn cả là lần này vẫn theo dòng lịch sử, nhưng Đại Mạc Dao có kết thúc hoàn toàn khác Bộ Bộ Kinh Tâm. Một bộ sách nhẹ nhàng để đọc trong những ngày cuối năm.

3.5 stars. Koala was the translator for this novel again. I found this story a bit hard to follow in the beginning and a bit confused about Jin Yu's upbringing and history. Anyway, the story follows a free-spirited and loyal heroine (quite similar traits to Lost You Forever's heroine) as she travels to the capital and falls in love with two very different men. This is more of a character-driven romance novel, not much of a political intrigue or history novel (found myself missing Sha Po Lang while reading the court machinations lol).

One thing I like about Tong Hua's romance novels is that they're all pretty short. No more novels with 200/300/400+ chapters! The other thing I really like is that her heroines go through a lot of growth. Jin Yu is no exception, growing and maturing in the cesspit of the capitol.

On the romance side, Jin Yu ends up with Huo Qu Bing. I like his character a lot, and I wish I could ship it, but it felt like Jin Yu's first love is and remains Jiu Ye. She has a special affection for him no matter what he does or how much time has passed. So the endgame romance wasn't super convincing for me though I really like HQB. I think the messy love triangles that Tong Hua writes work so well because the heroine genuinely cares about the many men and they love her as well - there's often a strong bond of affection and friendship between the heroine and her many choices.

Anyway, pretty enjoyable!

Truyện này có vẻ nhạt nhẽo hơn hẳn mấy quyển khác của Đồng Hoa, văn phong vs tình tiết cũng không quá đặc sắc. Nhân vật thì bị "toàn tài" quá. Xây dựng bối cảnh quyền lực của Cửu gia hơi lố. Nói chung cứ bị sao ý. Mình không đánh giá cao lắm.

I really like the book. As someone who is not that familiar with the power struggle during the era, I think it is fascinating on how the author managed to weave a such beautiful tale into the history recorded by the annals. This book makes me searched for Huo Qu Bing, a great general who died at a really young age.

And while I do love Huo Qu Bing, I am in love with Meng Jiu too. Such sad, sad, sad, sad, young lad. *cries* While reading this book I imagine Hu Ge as both Meng Jiu (because of the stills from the drama, I think he potrayed the pain and longing quite well, despite my reservation about him not being Huo Qu Bing, which actually pissed the hell out of me. But if it his Hu Ge's choice, I think it primarily because the character is such a compelling character and I won't blame him to try potray the emotional depth of Meng Jiu. phew.) and Huo Qu Bing (Hu Ge as the general Feing Peng in Chinese Paladin 3) and Liu Shi Shi as the lady Jin Yu, Yu Jin, Yu Er, Xiao Yu or whatever you call her is).

Political warfare aside, I find it really interesting that Tong Hua managed to explain (in her version of history) of why Huo Qu Bing did something that is weird for us to read when reading about the general, such as cuju in the middle of war, why he said he won't get married until the XiongNu eradicted, and so on.

Personally this is the first time for me reading a chinese novel (one which actually features an actual person from Han dinasty) and I am hooked. I might as well start reading her other books too. ^^

Truyện của Đồng Hoa lúc nào cũng khiến người đọc không thể rời mắt mà đặt quyển sách xuống. Một bộ truyện viết về tình yêu, lồng ghép yếu tố lịch sử nhà Hán, cùng với những trận chiến đấu sinh tử trên chiến trường và trong hậu cung. Thật sự cảm thấy lòng người quá thâm độc. Nhưng mà vẫn có nhiều yếu tố ngôn tình vừa phải, hợp lí, đáng yêu, chứ không giống như mấy quyển truyện ngôn tình vớ vẩn chỉ xoay quanh "yêu, lên giường, chia tay, quay lại, rồi lại lên giường" nhảm nhí. Đúng là phong cách uyên bác đậm chất Đồng Hoa
Thực ra cuốn này được 5 sao cơ, nhưng tập 1 không hay bằng tập 2, khá nhiều chi tiết, nhân vật phức tạp ( mà mình không hiểu, thậm chí không cần hiểu ), nhất là nam thứ Mạnh Cửu lại bị "ngược đãi" hi sinh hết vì người mình yêu, còn Tiểu Ngọc trong phần đầu lại không dứt khoát tình cảm, khiến hai người đàn ông đều đau khổ. Ấy là kiểu con gái mình ghét nhất, không rõ ràng.
P/s: Tự hứa đây là cuốn cuối cùng đọc cho đến khi thi đỗ đại học. Nhất định thi thật tốt, sau đó mua hết mấy quyển của Đồng Hoa về đọc. Cố lên !!

Was a great read and so happy it was a HEA (well...) compared to many typical Chinese based historical-fiction leaning towards epic tragedy.

You'll enjoy the characters and their interactions with each other as well as their subtle humor. The author is very skilled at flipping your feelings with each person making you understand that "people change". Your feelings towards a person can easily flip from negative to admirable over the course and it's great. It totally gives another dimension to every person. Just so you know this is a romance novel, but unlike Western heavy passionate writing, everything is kept subtle to lend to the imagination. Even so, I LOVE HUO QU BING. He's like the perfect male protagonist you want to have. He's adorably oblivious, but his humor and how he develops when it comes to love is just awesome.

Đại Mạc Dao không có được cái khung cảnh hùng vĩ và câu chuyện lấy nước mắt độc giả như Từng thề ước nhưng Đồng Hoa vẫn xây dựng được một cuốn truyện thú vị. Hoắc Khứ Bệnh hay Mạnh Cửu đều là những chàng trai trong mơ, và giống y như Ngọc Cẩn, người đọc rất khó để chọn đứng về phía chàng trai nào. Ngọc Cẩn thực sự hợp với Hoắc Khứ Bệnh hơn, nhưng tấm lưng cô độc của Mạnh Cửu ở cuối chuyện làm người đọc thổn thức quá đỗi. Hầu như tất cả phân đoạn trong tập 2 với Mạnh Cứu đều đau thương cả. Thôi thì chỉ mong nữ chính chọn ai thì chọn, người còn lại để lại cho độc giả là hợp lý.

I don't think there was one thng about this book that I didn't love. Tong Hua knows how to create characters that feel so real that you can't help but get attached to them.

I only wish that I could get an official English copy of the book. This is definitely a story i could re-read over and over again.

đôi lúc thấy Ngọc Cẩn có hình bóng gì đó của Nhược Hi, nhưng nàng có cuộc đời tự do hơn Nhược Hi, hạnh phúc hơn NH nữa.
đọc truyện của Đồng Hoa chưa bao giờ thấy thất vọng và cuốn này cũng không ngoại lệ.

The rainbow after the rain, the sunrise on the edge of the ocean, the first Spring flowers, most of the beauty in this world can never be owned, it is enough to have experienced it.

Chinese books have a special kind of magic that doesn't cease to fascinate me. Hidden between descriptions and dialogs, the simplest of words can sometimes convey a world of meaning and feeling. Tong Hua, in particular, seams to weave a delicate narrative that slowly unravels the human nature as it is: flawed and raw and lonely. She brings forth characters that feel, that hope, that have dreams and problems and that make mistakes. Huge mistakes.

Her stories are hardly ever about huge plot-lines with very complex story-lines. It is actually somewhat simple in the begging. However, it is how she can so brilliantly develops this lines, the characters wishes and actions and the responses to this actions that makes her stories so complex and interesting.

In Ballad of the Desert Jin Yu is a brilliant and lively girl, someone that has the brightness of the Desert's sun on her soul and that, despite the time period, is a free spirit, not being scared to love, to try and to defy the Han Dynasty conventions. She is the flower that bloomed too far to reach, but yet too close not to desire.

I'll not dwell to much describing the story line or the characters, as I think there is already enough of this on the internet (if the book descriptions are a bit vage, the drama descriptions can fill in the gaps), so I'll get to what interested me the most: Jiu Ye and Hua Qu Bing.

In the drama, I was a die-hard shipper for Qu Bing and Yu'er. I hated how Jiu Ye refused time and again to acknowledge her feelings, always keeping her at arms length, always retreating back onto himself to not let her get too close. Even when he was his most cold and cruel self, Yu'es feelings were completely exposed, her love for him as wide as the Xi Yu desert she loved so much. Qu Bing, on the other side, was the rake that couldn't leave her alone. That followed, nagged and annoyed her to death, not caring to conceal how he felt about her and how sure he was that she'd be his in the end.

There is even a line where he says something like "I always get what I want" or something, like it was impossible for him to imagine any kind of frustration. He was reckless where Jiu Ye was careful, smirked where Jiu Ye smiled slightly. One was the raging winds in a storm. The other was the light breeze that chased away the summer heat.

What I loved the most, though, was how Tong Hua developed and unraveled, little by little, both characters true selves. How she brought forth Qu Bing vulnerability, his fear and his loneliness, his need of a family and still how much he was hurting because of the struggles for the throne. And Jiu Ye...

He was there. He was always there, loving, caring, looking after Yu'er at the cost of his own health. He loved her the same way that he lived: carefully, from a distance, but deeply and passionately.

Two such different characters, and yet so much alike, not only because of their struggles, their loyalty and the chains they carried because of their connection to the Emperor of Chang An.

Not every bloom will flower, but to welcome the sunlight and bid farewell to the moonlight, playing with the wind and battling with the rain, that is living a full life. I don't think they will have any regrets...

This book succeeded with me where I can't remember any other being successful before (even in Bu Bu Jing Xin I cheered for the Fourth Prince in every version and even in the book, without a simule wrinkle on my brow): I couldn't decide with which I wanted Yu'er to stay. I simply loved the three of them too much, felt too much for them, to be happy with any ending possible.

I understood why she chose Qu Bing in the end, and I felt their relationship was beautiful and so kind. But I couldn't help feeling sad for Jiu Ye.

The constant, always serene and careful Jiu Ye. His ending, crossing the desert in his white camel, remembering the past while singing the Song of Ba Ya Er and Yi Zhu. Alone, with just his feeling and his regret as his companions. If only he had understood sooner, if only he had accepted Yu'er's feeling... I couldn't help wonder what'd've been if the two of them were together, what'd've become of Qu Bing.

The emotion was deep, but their fate was shallow. But... No regrets... Only longing.

Càng ngày càng thích văn phong của Đồng Hoa, ngôn ngữ chau truốt, câu truyện hấp dẫn.
Đoạn đầu tôi cực kỳ bị thu hút nhưng càng ngày lại cảm thấy niềm thu hút ấy có mấy phần kém đi. Là do tôi thay đổi?
Ngôn tình, self-help, kinh điển,.. liệu có khác nhau chăng? Đọc sách không nhất thiết lúc nào cũng phải học được cái gì, với tôi đọc sách gì cũng vậy thôi, quan trọng là tôi thấy hứng thú. Sách của Đồng Hoa nếu theo quan niệm của phần lớn mọi người bây giờ thì là truyện ngôn tình. Thế nhưng có sao chứ, những câu truyện của Đồng Hoa luôn có những màu sắc khác nhau, không chỉ có tình yêu mà còn tình bạn, tình người.
Nói lanh quanh nhiều như thế chẳng qua cũng chỉ là để giải thích cho tâm trạng của tôi bây giờ.

Kim Ngọc, Hoắc Khứ bệnh và Cửa gia, trong ba người họ có lẽ chỉ có một người cần được nói đến. Đó là Cửu gia - Mạnh Tây Mạc. Không phải vì tôi thích nhân vật này mà bởi vì Cửu gia khiến tôi phải suy nghĩ nhiều nhất. Cửu gia làm mọi thứ vì Kim Ngọc nhưng lúc quan trọng nhất thì lại hành động quá lý trí.

"Lần đầu tiên gặp nhau, một thiếu nữ váy áo tả tơi, bật cười thoải mái tự nhiên.
Lần gặp lại trong thành Trường An, một cô gái tâm tư tinh tế, giữa lúc cười nói còn biết chăm sóc hắn.

Trước uyên ương đằng, vì sao lại tàn nhẫn rút tay áo từng tí một ra khỏi bàn tay nàng? Mạnh Tây Mạc, ngươi năm đó sao có thể tàn nhẫn với nàng như thế? Tàn nhẫn với chính mình như thế? Vì sao không thể buông thả bản thân một lát?"

Không phải là tôi tiếc thương cho Cửu gia, tôi thích Hoắc Khứ Bệnh hơn, thế nhưng câu truyện của Cửu gia lại khiến tôi phải chua xót. Niềm đau ấy liệu ai có thể hiểu được chăng? Có lẽ chỉ có thể tự bản thân mình cảm nhận được mà thôi.

This is a beautiful book, in the usual Tong Hua style with some stunning and deep reflections, lyrical writing and heart wrenching story. It focuses on Yu Jin, a cool and strong girl raised by wolfs with a dark past that finds herself thrown among the political plots between two factions of court, two kingdoms at war and the love of two very different men.
It's not my favourite by Tong Hua, but it's still amazing and even though it's famous for being a HEA, I thought it wasn't really like that and struggled a lot with sadness through the last half of the book. I've realized most chinese stories, but specially Tong Hua's, always sadden me so wholeheartedly that I have a hard time reading them faster through most of the book and then nearing the end I just want to finish them desperately because I suffer so much that I feel almost sick during the last chapters. I still love them though, it's just that these are such melancholic novels and I always end up siding with the characters that sacrifice themselves...

Jin Yu, girl, stop it. Do something for you and stop looking out for others.
Jiu Ye.. you crazy woolheaded idiot. Jin Yu loved you, told you so multiple times and you let her go even though she clearly told you she'd do anything to stay by your side and NOW YOU REGRET LETTING HER GO. You idiot.
And Huo Qu Bing, is just him. I did not know about this majestic real life hero before reading this novel. I need to read up about him because he is so intense. I love him as much as I loved XL in LYF. Tong Hua has a knack for bringing such anti-hero-kinda-hero type characters to life and make you fall in love with them.
I can already see Jin Yu ending up with Jiu Ye since HQB is to die. And the fact I like Jin Yu better with HQB is not helping at all. So yeah, another great tragedy for me. 👍

Well, all I wanted say is compared to Lost You Forever which Tong Hwa claimed that it’s her best work, this is quite different in terms of plots and the depth of the characters. Maybe the translation that I read was just too summarized, that’s why I feel like everything happened so quick and is so rushed. But, anyway, not my favorite but thank god…it didn’t break my heart like Lost You Forever did! (Still did a little though and I will never shut up about how Lost You Forever broke my heart)

Just as amazing as the drama. The first light novel I truly loved and I'm gonna definitely reread it.

Đọc Đại mạc dao trong một tình cảnh vô cùng nguy khốn, khi mà chỉ còn 1 ngày là deadline assignment mà chưa có làm cái gì. Nhưng lỡ giở ra rồi ko thể ngừng đọc. Và phải đọc vun vút như ngựa bay. Vậy mà vẫn thấm thía được tâm tư tình cảm của các nhân vật, nhất là những đoạn tả cảnh như khắc vào một khuôn hình đẹp tuyệt đỉnh.
