Yuno seems to forget her memories with Yukiteru.. I wonder... Well it seems there is only Yukki who isn't as crazy as everyone else. Yuno is cool girl but a psycho. Minene is cool but a terrorist. Even 4th is an unecpected guy. Poor Yukki.
I debated between giving this 2 or 3 stars, and would lean more toward 2.5. There were a couple of things I really liked about it, but many more things I really didn't like about it.
High schooler Yukiteru Amano is a socially awkward loner who considers himself a bystander. He'd rather mind his own business instead of getting involved with other people, writing every mundane activity of his life in a cellphone diary. Secretly tormented by his solitude, he invents an imagery friend called Deus Ex Machina who claims to be the Lord of Time & Space. Taking pity on the lonesome Yuki, Deus grants his diary the ability to record future events. After learning that 11 other people with unique future diaries show up around Japan, Yuki learns that Deus is not a product of his imagination, and he has been selected to take part in a death game that involves fighting to become the next ruler of causality by outsmarting each other with their new prophetic devices. Luckily for Yuki, one of the death game's participants is his fellow classmate Yuno Gasai, the prettiest girl in his school who happens to love him so much that she would put her life on the line to protect him.
Speaking of Yuno, she's where most of the fun comes from. She's a severely unstable, possessive sociopath that will happily slaughter anyone and anything that get in the way of her selfish romantic fantasies. She's famous for inventing the infamous yandere trope (psycho/killer/stalker love interest) While she can technically be seen as the villain of the series and it's hard to fully sympathize with her because of how violent, impulsive and controlling she is, all of the other characters are so unlikable and bland that I often found myself rooting for her to just rip everyone else in the story to shreds.
Yuki is the main character, but he's such a whiny and idiotic pushover that I couldn't connect with the unhealthy relationship brewing between him and Yuno. I understand it's supposed to be a psychological thriller, but the story seemed to romanticize their relationship rather than portraying it for what it really was: predatory, abusive and horribly toxic. I would've rather had Yuno as the main protagonist and explore her tragic and demented backstory through much more intriguing characters to bounce off of rather than through a relationship with one of the lamest dudes in manga history.
The plot jumps around way too fast. None of the competitors have interesting personalities or motives so I didn't really feel any stakes or tension in the action. The only side character I somewhat liked is (funnily enough) another batshit crazy girl who plays the role of a cosplaying terrorist named Uryuu Minene. The dialogue could get really bad as the characters never reacted to death, betrayal or horrifying situations realistically. There's a point where a character discovers three dead bodies in his girlfriend's house, runs away in fear, then casually remains her partner for the rest of the series like nothing ever happened. There are many more scenes exactly like this where characters don't react and process things in remotely realistic or believable ways.
Some of the twists in the later parts of the series involving time and causality were admittedly cool, but they're introduced in a rushed and convoluted way which makes it feel messy overall. The action was good, there were a few emotional moments and the absolute chaotic nature of Yuno and Uryuu were exciting to watch unfold, but everything else about the characters, story and conflict of the narrative fall apart at the seams.
Keeping with expectations, the table have turned again. Those Yuki and Yuno thought were allies have become enemies, and one definite enemy becomes an ally... for now. Fourth finally reveals his plans, and they are not to help Yuki and Yuno. Fourth has problems of his own, and being God would really help him out. Meanwhile, the ruthless Ninth is a little surprising. Of course, it's all about saving her own life, but she suddenly becomes just as confusing as Fourth.
As if all this weren't enough, Yuki has other problems. What he discovered on his first visit to Yuno's house really messed up his feelings about her. The thing is, Yuno doesn't remember that. Yuki is really worried about her stability. He's even more worried about his confusing feelings. Does he love her in spite of what he's seen, or can he ever really love her because of it?
Let me quickly bore you with the usual comments about this series: great art, incredible plot twists, lots of action. On to volume 6!
Yay! I'm happy there was a comeback with this volume... let's hope it stays that way. This was a really exciting and intense volume! So much crazy going on! I totally said "Oh snap!" out loud upon reaching the pages 40 and 41 spread XD
I'm really excited to read the next volume! Things are getting intense!
Really good story line and a great concept. Another one that's a lot better than the hunger games. Good characters. Lots of horror, romance and plot twists. Some violence.
Poor Yuki can't take the pressure of being loved by Yuno. He wants to tell her that he doesn't love her, but he doesn't want to hurt her feelings. She turns into a psychotic mess. From their initial protector, Kurusu turns into an enemy when he sets the whole police department on their tracks. He wants to win the diary game and become God.
This is quite enough for me - I need to read stuff that makes more sense. The plot gets ridiculous and I don't expect it to improve. Yuki and Yuno will most likely end up together, so my expectations and curiosity are dead. It's not even funny any more. Manga like this one are pushing me back to reading Western comics.
Akise sets Yukiteru and Yuno to go out on a date while he secretly investigates Yuno's household, where he finds not the corpses of her parents, but a monstrous gaping hole leading from one of her rooms. It seems almost impossible that she could have dug such a hole in her backyard, and not only that but she truly has no recollection of Yukiteru ever coming over to her house before! Akise theorizes that Yuno has a fragile heart, and that the only thing left to tie it to her humanity is Yukiteru. How will Yukiteru ever break it to her that he can't return her affections? Or perhaps he is starting to feel for her... And later, Kurusu turns his back on their alliance only to make a new one with terrorist and diary holder Ninth, AKA Minene Uryu. What caused this sudden change of heart in Kurusu? Adults surely are strange.
Hmmmmmmm, I'd say my actual rating would beeee... 3 and a half stars out of five! But I really don't know. I just couldn't click with with volume like I usually do. I guess it's because something traumatic happened today and I really don't share any feelings (at the moment!) with anything that was in this volume. Although, the fact that I have shared similar feelings as to Kurusu's for his family, and gone to extreme extents even to backstab others for dear people as well, does that make me an adult? Haha, or am I just mean? Anyhow, this volume made me a little sad. I do enjoy the romance development though. ;) P.S. I don't think I could ever hate Kurusu. I felt really sorry for him.. and he always had the best intentions for everyone. It's just that he had to make a choice between somewhat innocent children and the family that he loves and cherishes. He did what any good-hearted (but not overly good-hearted) adult would and should do. Keigo Kurusu was really a great guy. Even if I can see him going crazy with the power of becoming a God, if he had ever become one.
Amazing! I never thought that Kurusu would betray Yuki and Yuno. I've read the entire series and this was still one of the top three most surprising scenes for me. Fourth's death is also sad. Murmur's true intentions start to surface and the survival game only intensifies from here since Kurusu, "the stabilizer", is dead.
Ha! I'm actually happy that Yukki and Yuno become fugitives. Just lock them up! I'm sure they won't mind, as long as they're not locked in separate cells.
The betray of the fourth and a new alliance si formed with the first, the second and the ninth. Also we know the reason of the betray and the dead end appear to the three of them.
