While reading this book I learned quite a bit about the Civil War and some of the main participants. It's interesting how often people's lives intersect and we never realize it until decades later. These six people lived separate lives, in different parts of the country. Yet their actions changed the United States forever. I believe we should encourage our Middle School and High School students to read this book.

A good book to read over the 4th of July I suppose! I can't really recommend it, however. I suppose that if your knowledge of the American Civil War came from this book that'd be better than nothing, but it wouldn't be much better. The level of writing is Y/A and there are several major editorial errors in the book. Still ... I learned a bit more than before and there are some nice pictures.

I really liked the format of the book. 6 different people who lived around the time of the Civil War. Their lives, before and after the war and how they interacted with each other. Much better than learning dates and battle names.
I especially liked the last portion, about Matthew Brady, an early photographer.
Will look into other books in the series.

The first in a new history series from Scholastic, this slim volume focuses on biographical sketches of six key players during the Civil War: Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, Clara Barton, George McClellan, Robert E. Lee, and Matthew Brady, and how their lives intertwined. Suitable for elementary school-aged readers, the book is abundantly illustrated in full color, with photographs, maps, and paintings selected to bring these famous individuals to life.

Each person is profiled in a separate chapter, about 20 pages long, telling about his or her childhood, early years, their families, and their accomplishments, in an easy-to-read format. The biographical format also allows the author to compare and contrast the different individuals, explaining how Lincoln and Frederick Douglass had many things in common, for example, both having started their lives poor and having become famous speakers and leaders, and how Matthew Brady's photography helped make Lincoln president.

This is a good choice for students interested in learning more about famous individuals from the Civil War, but it is not a book chronicling the war itself. While the information provided is not in-depth, it provides a useful introduction to the various figures profiled, and may spur students' interest in exploring their lives in more depth in other biographies or Internet resources. Enough details are provided on each of the six figures to be used in an elementary school biographical report as well; the book could also be a good selection for older middle school or even high school students with lower reading skills, since the small size and low page count (150 pages) make it less intimidating for reluctant readers than some other nonfiction choices. Included in the text is a bibliography of relevant books, articles, and websites, as well as an index.

I thought that this book was filled with sorrow, hope, sadness, and happiness of all the main characters of the great civil war.

For example ABRAHAM LINCOLN is one of the most famous person in the civil war because he was involved in most of the decision. Also as most of you know that he was the sixteenth president, and he settled a great war. Yes. You are right about that, and he settled the civil war before he was shot afterwards. But he did other great things that we didn't know about, and he got them all settled all after a cold almost never ending war about slavery.

If you read this book I think you will be able to know all about the civil war, and all of the person who was a hero to everyone. Also you could be able to answer any questions to the teachers about the civil war you know even it is confusing for everyone else in your class.

You must read this book because you will be smarter than anyone else about the secrets of the civil war that isn't told by any other stories.

I really appreciate this authors perspective on history! The conclusion says it all, "All of these people are connected. They all had a part
to play in the war, and in its aftermath. And seeing
those parts, learning about these people, helps us put all the pieces together. It's easy to study one aspect of the war. But by looking at these different sides, we can see what really happened. We can learn about why it happened, and why people did what they did. Each of these people- Lincoln, Douglass, Barton, MeClellan Lee, and Brady- did what they thought was best. They stood up for their beliefs and their ideals, and they tried to help the people around them. Their actions helped shape the American Civil War, and by studying their actions, we can understand a bit of what they went through and admire their bravery and determination. We can see that each of them, in their own way, was a hero of the Civil War." [Aaron Rosenberg]

The Civil War: One Event, Six People does a great job about giving a detailed overview of the civil war in the stories of these six well known historical figures. The sections on each person gives different perspectives on the civil war while creating a solid view of the was as a whole. This is why I paired it with I Survived the Battle of Gettysburg, The Civil War gives a great view of its impact on the country and history and I survived shows the war on a smaller scale. It focuses on a normal person in this era and shows the struggles of slaves and soldiers during the war. These two give perspective to each other.
