Manka-ka Eiji Nonaka allows his characters to break the proverbial fourth wall in this ninth volume of Cromartie High School. Sort of.
Masked Takenouchi (the recurring character who has played a role in Cromartie since his hijacking of an airplane - and subsequently being mistaken for the Takenouchi, alumnus of this fine school, due to his wearing of the mask) meets up with his former partner in crime - and lectures him on how his presence would be deemed repetitive, unoriginal, and therefore unwelcome by students... and, perhaps, readers of the manga? Nonaka does not allow his characters to expressly state their existence in pen-and-ink, but the presence of unspoken popularity polls (a fixture within Japanese manga periodicals) is made clear all the same.
Meanwhile, over at rival Manuel High, thug/net-savvy Kiichi Fujimoto brings his character to yet another level of fanaticism when he is threatened on his own private turf by a "newb" computer user who is able to impress his fellow classmates with his minimal computer skills (think of how impressed you were when you first saw someone else using Microsoft Windows in front of you, in person, and you've pretty much got the idea...).
Shinjiro "Sasuke" Hayashida finds himself working with schoolmate Masked "Suzuki" Takenouchi - only, because they both wear "costumes" to school (Suzuki, his ski mask, and Hayashida, his faux-mohawk) which are taken off at work, the two remain unaware... but for how long?
Very little else happens within this volume. Though the series retains its humour, it begins to feel forced, with many of the characters struggling to keep their "schtick" vaguely amusing, or even interesting. Volume 9 marks perhaps the lowest point in the manga since the prolonged Freddie/Pootan debacle in Volume 6.
Collection of manga stories about high school guys who try to act like true "badasses" but always end up looking completely absurd. Pretty funny stuff, including a robot sitting in a jacuzzi.
