'To the outside world we were this perfectly contented happy family - a mother, a father and three little girls. And the truth? Really it was a conspiracy of silence - everyone living a life on the surface while underneath reality bubbles away' - until the day that it blows up John and Elizabeth Dunville believe they have the ideal family. Their three daughters - beautiful, vivacious Baby, clever, industrious Becky, and lively, if mischievous, Brona - attend Dublin's most prestigious convent school, and all have bright futures. But denial and deception go hand in hand, and one night, one of the girls slips out into the December fog, and doesn't come home. I have to say, this book was a bit of a rollercoaster in terms of how I felt about it. At first it really gripped me but around 30% of the way through I was started to find it drawing out too much, however I kept reading and I'm glad I did, it was great how it all came together but I do agree that the very end wasn't quite right, I'd have liked more closure in those last few pages, instead it seemed an abrupt ending. Over all I enjoyed it.
This is the 2nd Mary Stanley book I have read. Absolutely brilliantly written. The characters are so well-drawn. Stanley kept me interested the whole way through trying to work out what had happened to 'Baby' Dunville. can't wait to read another from this author.
Picked this up in a charity shop as I liked the cover ! Enjoyed the twists & turns, the middle part was a bit too drawn out; would like to read more from this author.
While some of the sexual content isn't easy to read, you have to admit it is realistic. I did occasionally suspect who the murderer was, but didn't imagine how or why it happened. I am grateful to the author for tying up all lose ends; it would have been easy in a story like this to leave something for the reader to wonder about.
