Miss Liz's Passion

Rate this book

Elizabeth Gentry put all her passion into her students. Educating them, encouraging them, reaching them - that was easy. It was the living that was hard. After the betrayal, the grief and the pain, there was a kind of peace in giving away her heart to her pupils.

That was what made Todd Lewis so dangerous. With his dogged determination and rugged handsomeness, he had slowly staked his own claim on her heart and made her feel again. Made her want to hope and dream. But her hopes, her dreams, her heart - were so fragile. Could she entrust them to him? Or would he destroy them for good?

With two other careers to her credit before becoming a novelist and four states in which she's lived for extended periods of time, Sherryl Woods has collected friends and memories, along with way too much unnecessary junk.

"The friends are the only things I've brought with me through the years that really matter," she says. "I could probably live without one more chintz teacup, another tin-litho sandpail or another snowglobe, but I need those friends."

The theme of enduring friendships and families is always central to Sherryl's books, including her latest Chesapeake Shores series — THE INN AT EAGLE POINT, FLOWERS ON MAIN and HARBOR LIGHTS.

Author of more than 100 romance and mystery novels, Sherryl Woods grew up in Virginia. Over the years she had lived in Ohio and Florida, as well as California. Currently she divides her time between Key Biscayne, Florida and Colonial Beach, Virginia, the small, river-front town where she spent her childhood summers.

A graduate of Ohio State University School of Journalism, Sherryl spent more than ten years as a journalist, most of them as a television critic for newspapers in Ohio and Florida. For several years she also coordinated a motivational program for the more than 8,000 employees at the University of Miami-Jackson Memorial Medical Center.

Her first book, RESTORING LOVE, was published in 1982 by Dell Candlelight Ecstasy under the pseudonym of Suzanne Sherrill. Her second book, SAND CASTLES, under the pseudonym of Alexandra Kirk, was published later that same year by Bantam. She began using her own name when she moved to the Second Chance at Love line at Berkley Publishing. In 1986, she began writing full-time and also began her long career at Silhouette Books with the Desire title NOT AT EIGHT, DARLING, set in the world of television which she covered for so many years.

In addition to her more than 75 romances for Silhouette Desire and Special Edition, she has written thirteen mysteries — nine in the Amanda Roberts series and four in the Molly DeWitt series.

When she's not writing or reading, Sherryl loves to garden, though she's not at her best on a riding lawn mower. She also loves tennis, theater, and ballet, even though her top spin has long since vanished, she's never set foot on a stage, and she's way too uncoordinated to dance. She also loves baseball and claims anyone who's ever seen Kevin Costner in "Bull Durham" can understand why.

These people win the prizes for self-absorbed, insensitive behavior:

Special award to the h in this book, a teacher who has the H's eight-year-old son in tears by the third week because he can't figure out how to do his classwork, something she doesn't seem to notice; and who rejects the H, who is ashamed of his dyslexia, and leaves him because he didn't tell her about his secret, thus confirming that he was right to keep it from her.

Grand prize to the H, who accuses her of being glad when her students move on to the next year because that means she won't get too attached to them (like she did with her own child, who died). He does this entirely because he is trying to deflect attention away from his own dyslexia, which the h is unaware of, but DAMN, H -- low blow.

Thank goodness for Hank, or these two stubborn lovers wouldn’t ever get out of their own way...

Flawed

I was underwhelmed. The premise was good, the characters interesting. The problem was the execution of those characters in that story was flawed. Example: Liz knows something is wrong, demands to know what it is. Then Todd finally comes to confess and suddenly she wants to wait almost a week to find out????? Too many contradictions of character.

Let me start by saying the Sherryl Woods book was actually a prequel to Tea and Destiny although I did not know that until I got about halfway through. As I was reading it I remembered this vague mention of Elizabeth and Todd. Then I was introduced to Hank and I was like "Wait, hold the phone!"

Then I was introduced to Ann Davies who was the heroine in Tea and Destiny. Suffice to say I spent a great deal of time googling this. Apparently they are not actually connected anywhere online (that I could find) other than both being by Sherryl Woods. They don't have to be read in order but if you read Tea and Destiny first then you know what happens to Elizabeth and Todd. By the time I realized it, it was too late and I finished the story.

Alright so Elizabeth had some crappy history which, let's face it, describes most Harlequin books. Seriously its never just two people with semi-normal backgrounds just having personality issues. Its never about the money or something. It always goes back to abandonment or commitment issues from a crappy relationship. No one ever worries they won't be a good role model for the other's kid.

Anyway Liz and Todd danced around each other and fought the attraction. Liz lost her horrible husband and small child and now wants nothing to do with love. Todd and his son were abandoned by the wife/mother. Todd's ready for some lovin' but Liz is like 'NO WAY!"

And they all lived happily ever after...

Dyslexic child: How should it be treated

A child’s dyslexia leads his teacher to want to help him. His father, who was dyslexic as a child, worries about his son being stigmatized and resists the teacher’s suggestions. The conflict between the 2 while each cares about the boy and come to care about each other.

A secondary theme of caring for dolphins and support for them.
Written with Sherryl Wood’s’ usual style making her characters real and likable.

Love this author but not so much the book. Did not care for Todd. Too macho and never got his mind out of his pants. Wanted his way and even though they kept saying how compassionate and thoughtful he was— never saw it in action. Liz was as badly drawn as Todd. Couldn’t stand up for herself without running out. Too easily swayed. Liked her friend Ann and his friend Hank. Glad they got their own story which I really liked.

Let me say from the beginning, I do not like to read love stories. However, this book is about a teacher who really cares about a struggling student. The author draws the reader immediately into the story. Some of the teacher's ideas are a bit over the top and in today's society she would be fired or in serious trouble. However, the teacher's compassion for the young student saves the book.

This was a beautiful story about three people, dyslexia and the love that drew them all together. Todd and Liz were both betrayed by their spouses in their first marriages. This set the foundation for some skirmishes in the trust department but through communication and steadfastness they were able to get past each hurdle towards trusting and loving each other. A really fine treatment of a too common yet not commonly addressed dysfunction in today's society. A good read.

This Sherryl Woods story was an older one and boring. However, Home on the Ranch by Allison Leigh was a wonder light read! A great surprise at the end of a dull Sherryl Woods book.

Loved the premise but this was a DNF for me because it had a few major issues. Firstly, I couldn't work out why the Prologue was needed. Also, why was the teacher carrying on about the child's poor behaviour etc. but then identifying him as having a learning disability? And a teacher that takes a student off school grounds to find their father? That didn't seem quite right, either. Another issue I had with this is, yes, it was published in 1989 but it still felt like the author was writing a contemporary novel but with characters that were more suited to a historical at times. There was no consistency for the characters; one even comments on how Miss Liz sounds like some sort of historical character. So, yeah, this just didn't work for me.
