What if God’s love were like the sun, constant and unchanging? What if one day you realized nothing could take that away?
Firebird is a bright orange baby oriole who just loves the sunshine. But whenever a storm blows in, he frets and asks Mama why God allows the rain to take the sun away. When Firebird is finally old enough, his mother gently instructs him to fly up through the thunder and lightning to see what’s on the other side.
It’s a rough flight, and just when he’s about to give up, Firebird rises above the storm to discover the sun shining where it always had been.
God never lets the storm take the sun away. With that truth in his heart, Firebird continues to bask in the sunshine, but just as important, he learns to rejoice in the rain.
Firebird is a children’s book that parallels the life of Samantha Crawford, a storybook artist in the inspiring new film Unconditional (scheduled for a theatrical launch in fall 2012) who has lost sight of God’s love.
This fiction tale does anthropormorphize birds, and specifically has the baby bird anxious. But it is a powerful carrier for children to eventually rise above the storm with the baby bird to see that the Sun still shines even when it is obscured by cloud. This book is delightfully beautiful in both languages . Ones I ordered have arrived in 2 different sizes, so check the dimensions if you order a hard copy. Book is also available in ebook.
I plan to read a book a day with my two little children. This was the first one I started with in January 2025. I had read it with my older son who is now 15 when he was little, and it had been a while since I had read it. The book did not disappoint. My boys loved it. They loved the story and the artwork, but the depth of the story was a little too advanced for them. They are two and five. It is a story that we will read over and over again and it will grow with them.
This is my favorite children's book. I love the quote on the back of the book, "What if God's love were like the sun, constant and unchanging. What if one day you realized nothing could take that away?"
This book is very cute. God takes care of every little creature, and it is no different for this cute, little bird. I love the rich, vibrant colors of the illustrations. While the story is very simple, the message of God's love comes across. This is a great book for beginning readers.
A few weeks ago, I received a copy of a children's book that I've had my eye on for a couple of months now: "Firebird" by Brent McCorkle and Amy Parker.
I first learned about this book this summer when I attended a private screening for the new film "Unconditional." The lead character in "Unconditional" is a children's book author and illustrator. From when she was a child, she had been drawing a bird character and always intended to write a book about the bird, but as she grew older, a very traumatic situation caused her to walk away from illustrating and writing. After running into an old friend, she found inspiration again to illustrate and write, and finally put to paper the story of the bright orange baby oriole, Firebird.
Much like the character in "Unconditional", Firebird finds out that God's love, no matter what you're going through in life, is always there - constant and unchanging. Sometimes you have to deal with the storms of life, but if you don't give up and keep going, the clouds will break and you'll see the beautiful glow of sunshine - God's unfailing love.
The message of the book, while an adult can appreciate it, is written so a child can understand it. I think I'll be purchasing a few additional copies to share with our nieces and nephews.

Writer, director and film composer, Brent McCorkle joins with author Amy Parker to produce Firebird, an inspirational picture book for children ages four and up. The well-written message draws a simple analogy between life’s storms, common doubts and God’s unchanging love. Beautiful colorful illustrations by Disney animators, Rob Corley and Chuck Vollmer enhance the story and invite youngsters to pick up the book.
The story begins with a baby oriole that his mother named Firebird because of his beautiful plumage and colorful array of orange feathers. Youngsters see the little bird’s delight when he basks in the bright sunshine and fluffs his feathers amidst the tree tops, while his friends fly about twittering.
However, when the rains arrive Firebird asks his mother, “Why does God let the storm take the sun away?”…Full Review: http://tinyurl.com/bkdft8r
Our family loved this little board book! The colors were so bright and the drawings helped depict expressions whether it was happiness, fear, or sadness very good!
The story itself was perfect in displaying how God love's is always with us whether were going through hard times or good! The way Firebird understands this truth in the story was presented in a way where young children can understand too!
I think this is a great little board book for little hands to look at and have parents read! There is such a great message there and with very colorful pictures to help keep the attention of young ones! This will be a well read book in our family!
I give Firebird a 5 out of 5 stars!
*(I received this board book from B&H Publishing in exchange for an honest review! All thoughts expressed are my own and I was not required to write a positive review!)*
I thought the book was for kids, but if I was a kid I would enjoy it. My sister did. It doesn’t have a lot of words in it. The book is in a movie and tells about the author.
The book is about a baby bird that wonders why the storms take the sun away. The mom tells him that in time he will know when he gets stronger. When he gets stronger and older, he flies up past the clouds. He finds out that the sun is still there. Now whenever the storms come out, he knows that the sun is still there and he is happy.
I would recommend this book to young boys and girls. I wouldn’t recommend this to older children.
This beautifully-illustrated children's treasure is a great book to introduce the concept of God to a small child who may have questions about the logic of a creator. I read this book with a few of my tutorial students.
Firebird can't understand why God allows the sun to be hidden by thunderstorms. Then one day, his mom challenges him to fly up past the clouds until he can see the sun. Firebird learns that even when he can't see the sun, it's always there.
This book was mentioned in the beautiful movie, Unconditional. In that movie, the protagonist, Sam, is an illustrator working on this very book!
I recommend this book mainly to PreK through second grade students.
A wonderful, uplifting story for children and adults. The illustrations are beautiful and really make you want to leave this book lying around to read whenever you need a pick me up. Firebird is a young oriole and questions why God allows the rain to take the sun away. His mother helps him find that that isn't the case. He rejoices in finding out the sun is always there. A thoughtful gift for any celebration in your life.
My twin sister Holly bought this book two weeks before she died and told me how she thought the bird was so cute. Later when collecting her things I found it and read this book. I felt that she had bought this book for me and was leaving it for me to remind me that through the storms of life God is with us always. I know Holly is watching over our family as well along with our beautiful mother.
Современное понимание христианской морали изложено в этой детской книге 2012-го года.
Автор_ки «Firebird: He Lived for the Sunsine» пишут: «Now, over and over again the rains would come, and over and over again Firebird would complain to his mama.»
Маленькая иволга жалуется на неудачи, так как не видит за их ними общую картину, истинный порядок вещей. Но через умение летать Огнептичке открывается правда: Божественная любовь снисходит на нас в любой шторм.
This is the delightful and colorful story of Firebird who always complained about the rain hiding the sun until his mother challenged him to ‘ride the clouds.' An allegory regarding God.
Your children will love the many caricatures of Firebird’s many poses! They will have you and your children giggling in delight!
This is an incredible story about understanding how we are born to live in the light, and we love it and crave it and feel a gap when we don't have it but that doesn't mean its not there when we can't feel it. God is constant, and we don't understand trials or hardships the same way until we grasp this part of God's nature and character.
One of THE most heart-warming stories of all my life. I purchased this book for my 6 year old daughter who is a melanoma survivor diagnosed at the age of 4 to give to her as a birthday gift. This story is her life if I had written it myself.
