A Dark Perfection is a genre-bending novel fusing the future technologies of advanced weapon systems, the behind-the-scenes politics of Washington DC and the Oval Office with the darkest global killer yet conceived.
Jack O’Neill, former FBI counter-terrorism interrogator, has come back to his hometown of Chicago after the death of his wife, where he becomes lead Federal Prosecutor for all major gang cases.
After the worst terrorist attack in U.S history, O’Neill is ordered to Washington to interrogate the only terrorist survivor – Aisha, the Arab girl with the face of a Siren.
O’Neill is then pulled into a brutal homicide investigation as he aids Detective Keialani Keno, a childhood friend from Hawaii teaching at the FBI Academy, as she attempts to solve a bizarre series of murders - the U.S. Ambassador and his mistress in Paris, an Army Major and his mistress at a beach house in Kauai, a scientist found slumped in a bathtub in Florence, each victim staring straight ahead, their eyes turned blood red.
As Keno and O'Neill draw closer to the identity of the killer – an individual of immense political and financial power – they are suddenly framed as terrorist collaborators, with only O’Neill’s former FBI partner, NSA Director Mac Osborne, the President of the United States and Paris Inspector Henri Garneau standing behind them. From the Oval Office to the FBI Forensic Lab, from the Scottish Highlands to London and Paris, from Florence to Kauai and into the lair of the world’s deadliest terrorist cell, O’Neill and Keno race to save themselves and prevent a cascading global catastrophe.
And behind it all, like a hawk circling over prey, is the most lethal serial killer the world has ever known. More intelligent than Hannibal Lecter, more ruthless than Stalin – a killer who wants to murder the entire world.
And who may very well be the Anti-Christ…
Mark James is a former Prosecutor and Special Agent with the U.S. Federal Government. In addition to a law degree, he holds a master's degree in international law and strategic studies from the London School of Economics.
A gave this book a chance. I found the premise fascinating, but after 50 pages (of 400 + pages), I found myself not really caring about the characters within and have decided to stop. I've been trying to figure out why, and think it's because of James' scope. The players here are generally those in power and it's an interesting read to attempt to get inside their heads, to see why those in power do what they do. But for some reason, it never quite rang true for me.
Also, the planning and execution of the terrorist attack seemed a bit -too- perfect. Yes, I'm aware that not all pieces fell into place, but the long-term organization of this plan seemed a little far-fetched. (I suppose this should have been assumed from the title, but I couldn't suspend my disbelief on it.)
This is a moderately fast-paced novel, interspersed with some rather plodding government and shadow government shenanigans. Of course, the true horror was the psychopathic killer. Believe it or not, but he was worse than the terrorists. There were several instances of the author using an incorrect word (usually homonyms and homophones). Some mistakes can slip by even a good editor, but there were too many for me to be charitable. It was either ignorance or sloppiness which allowed these mistakes to make it into a finished book. Thankfully, the language wasn't too bad and the one sex scene was mercifully brief and one of those "fade to black" scenes -- handled very nicely.
I read this book during a free promotion at Amazon. I would have gladly paid for it - it was that good. The writing style is crisp and edgy, the story engrossing, and it has one "killer" of an ending! The characters are believable, the romance between Jack and Lani was tastefully done, and the psyche of the high-powered serial killer was "to die for"! I seriously recommend this book - it was the best book that I've read all year and I can't wait for the sequel - A Blue Perfection. Great job for a first-time author!
A fantastic near-future suspense thriller...truly one of the best books I've read in a long time. Looking at the book description, I thought it might be too terrorist-centered, but that wasn't the case at all. In fact, it has everything--a brilliant psychopathic killer, a love story, frighteningly believable future technologies, and a writing style that has depth and progressively pulls you in. I couldn't put it down. It was like a great movie you didn't want to end and, frankly, it should be a movie! Highly recommended!
This book was interesting and intriguing. It was filled with mystery, humor, horror, and widely political. once I started reading this book, I could not put it down until I finished it. It was filled with suspense which holds a lot of mystery in each of the characters. if you like suspense, mystery, and books written about government agencies, you should read this book.
So many seemingly disconnected characters -- some truly frightening technological wonders -- a treasonous plot -- a psychopathic killer -- and of all things, a love story -- this book has it all. Still, I had trouble with the structure. However, I couldn't give up until everything was resolved. It's a good read.
The usual thriller with an evil genius antithesis of course and an almost super heroe thesis. Very slow ending with a lot that could have been left out which made the ending unnecessarily drawn out. Not the most thought-provoking. Great reading while you're doing your thing in the potty.
Political thrillers are not my usual reading but I was interested in this and I got it free on kindle. I was hooked for the first 5% of the book but after that it really started to drag. I could skip entire paragraphs and not miss out on much. It grew long winded and just over sized.
