Long, Tall Texans #33

Corazón de hierro

Rate this book

Susan Eloise Spaeth was born on 11 December 1946 in Cuthbert, Georgia, USA. She was the eldest daughter of Maggie Eloise Cliatt, a nurse and also journalist, and William Olin Spaeth, a college professor. Her mother was part of the women's liberation movement many years before it became fashionable. Her best friends are her mother and her sister, Dannis Spaeth (Cole), who now has two daughters, Amanda Belle Hofstetter and Maggie and lives in Utah. Susan grew up reading Zane Grey and fell in love with cowboys. Susan is a former newspaper reporter, with sixteen years experience on both daily and weekly newspapers. Since 1972, she has been married to James Kyle and have since settled down in Cornelia, Georgia, where she started to write romance novels. Susan and her husband have one son, Blayne Edward, born in 1980.

She began selling romances in 1979 as Diana Palmer. She also used the pseudonyms Diana Blayne and Katy Currie, and her married name: Susan Kyle. She is listed in numerous publications, including Contemporary Authors by Gale Research, Inc., Twentieth Century Romance and Historical Writers by St. James Press, The Writers Directory by St. James Press, the International Who's Who of Authors and Writers by Meirose Press, Ltd., and Love's Leading Ladies by Kathryn Falk. Dalton national sales awards, two Bookrak national sales awards, a Lifetime Achievement Award for series storytelling from Romantic Times, several Affaire de Coeur awards, and two regional RWA awards.

Inspired by her husband, who quit a blue-collar manufacturing job to return to school and get his diploma in computer programming, Susan herself went back to college as a day student at the age of 45. In 1995, she graduated summa cum laude from Piedmont College, Demorest, GA, with a major in history and a double minor in archaeology and Spanish. She was named to two honor societies (the Torch Club and Alpha Chi), and was named to the National Dean's List. In addition to her writing projects, she is currently working on her master's degree in history at California State University. She hopes to specialize in Native American studies. She is a member of the Native American Rights Fund, the American Museum of Natural History, the National Cattlemen's Association, the Archaeological Institute of Amenca, the Planetary Society, The Georgia Conservancy, the Georgia Sheriff's Association, and numerous conservation and charitable organizations. Her hobbies include gardening, archaeology, anthropology, iguanas, astronomy and music.

In 1998, her husband retired from his own computer business and now pursues skeet shooting medals in local, state, national and international competition. They love riding around and looking at the countryside, watching sci-fi on TV and at the movies, just talking and eating out.

Trigger: forced seduction

Heroine is a clerk in a bookshop. Hero has just bought a ranch in Jacobsville. He has a bodyguard called Tony the Dancer. Hero has never heard of Amazon and asks the heroine to order him hardbound books. Heroine thinks he’s rude/hot and tries out rudimentary banter.

They meet again when heroine is late delivering his book order to his ranch. A week later they meet in the cemetery. He’s visiting his daughter’s grave (she was killed in a car accident, then his ex-wife committed suicide) and heroine is visiting her grandfather’s grave. They decide to be each other’s family if either one is ever sick.

The next night the heroine has terrible stomach pains and calls 911. Her appendix burst and she is operated on. Hero brings her to his ranch to recover.

Hero’s lady lawyer is jealous and says all kinds of horrible things to the heroine. Hero kicks her out, but she comes back like nothing happened and hero lets her stay.

Once heroine is well enough, hero’s ranch hand takes her to a kick ass barbeque (A buffet with the whole steer and soft serve ice cream!). Hero takes the lady lawyer as his date. When heroine laughs at a joke, lady lawyer takes it wrong and slaps her across the face. Hero then takes lady lawyer home, but returns to watch the denizens of Jacobsville dance the paso doble, tango and waltz. A mariachi band apparently knows how to play the correct accompaniment to each of these dances.

Hero takes heroine home after dispatching the ranch hand. He asks to come in since he’s too old for just kisses. Heroine doesn’t know what he means by that. Heavy petting? Hero wants sex and “takes it” without consent.

Heroine is horrified. Not only did it hurt, but now she’s a fallen woman. Hero is angry with himself and takes it out on heroine. He tells her to get an abortion if she’s pregnant since he never wants another child.

Lady lawyer then assures the drunk hero that the heroine was a jezebel who seduced him. The hero signs a check for $10,000 for the heroine to have an abortion if necessary and to go away.
Lady lawyer presents the heroine with the check and then asks her how old she is. Heroine is 19. Even lady lawyer blanches at that.

When Tony the Dancer finds out the heroine is only 19 and how badly the hero treated her, he quits working for the hero. Meanwhile three kidnappers try to take the heroine from the bookshop, but she stabs herself in her appendectomy scar and they decide they don’t want a dead hostage. Ranch hand just happens to come by and the three terrorists are taken to jail.

After heroine is stitched up again, the hero takes it on himself to watch over the heroine. He’s sorry for all of his sins and he loves her. Heroine is not sure if she forgives him yet, but she is distracted by a phone call from New York. Her children’s book is being published.

Tony the Dancer is “arrested” so he can lure the kidnappers into a trap for the police. It all works out. The danger is over.

Hero then discovers Tony was a special forces guy who rescued heroine when she was a child living with her missionary parents in Sierra Leone. Her father was killed in a terrorist explosion and she suffered brain damage (she can’t match colors or remember much of her childhood). Her mother became embittered and became a slut (she broke up three marriages) to embarrass her father who had encouraged her husband to become a missionary. Heroine had to put up with her mother’s bad reputation before she died as well as her grandfather’s lectures on the North African campaign in WWII. This is why heroine seems older than 19. LOL

Hero made sex better for her the next time. She is not pregnant and has a Neiman Marcus white gown and big wedding for an HEA.

This one seemed more looney tunes than usual. And I enjoyed it!

Cutesy detail Heroine calls him an ogre a lot.

Typical DP hero that says and does some inexcusable things to the little h.

The only thing that saved it from a two star rating is that not only did the tiny and very young h let the hero have it verbally, but actually threw a vase at him.

He may not have groveled enough, but his guilt was off the charts WHICH IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN!!!!

I’ve read many reviews and I knew that there was a forced seduction.
No, there’s no forced seduction because seduction means that the heroine enjoys what she’s doing. Here we have forced sex because he takes his pleasure while she cries for the pain.
She was a 19 year old virgin.
What I can’t forgive is that he was lousy in bed!
At least when other heroes had forced seduction the heroine found the experience pleasant…He has lousy and shabby sex with her without consent. This man went so low in my opinion that I had to dig to find him.
Then he was furious and said it was her fault, that she seduced him and tried to trap him with pregnancy and tried to buy a termination sending his ow/ lawyer to give her a chèque. Can a man stoop lower???
He is a coward and a vile, and he couldn’t even make good sex.
What does he have? Nothing. But the heroine forgave him and married him all the same.
I don’t know where DP finds this hideous men. I hope she doesn’t take them from real life.
And the pessimism: life is hard is a sentence that is never missing in her book.
But the angst was good ( the hero’s a**holeness made the day)

One of those DPs where sex happens without the benefit of matrimony....and then guilt is heaped on every which way. The temporary angst was good with the ow heaping oil on the fire but those happy moments didn't last long.
The Jacobsville's legion of cops/mercs/cowboys Hs (and spouses) plod in and out (still) trying to rout out the druglords and terrorists. I know we all love to read about previous mcs and their happiness but I think I've already read a dozen books telling me how happy and settled the Ballengers, the Parks, the Coltrains/the Harts/the Griers etc. are.
So I'd prefer the focus to be solely/mostly on the h/H and their romance for once!

And I just can't imagine how Harley Fowler, the eternal om can ever turn into a typical DP H one day....he's such a soppy wuss!

He is a predator who has found a particularly appealing prey -- that's it. He is fundamentally dishonorable and his simply realizing this does not change that.

I'm in love with this author's alpha yet vulnerable heroes and her innocent yet brave heroines so I definitely liked this book but as another reviewer said the heart-wrenching feeling that you usually get while reading Diana Palmer was sadly lacking.

Sara Dobbs menganggap Jared Cameron itu monster. Dgn kearogansiannya, Jared menganggap hina dan rendah diri Sara.

Saya heran kapan chemistry mereka berkembang. Entah sewaktu Sara dioperasi usus buntu.

Ridiculous sekali. Saya sbg pembaca justru malah merasa bodoh benar author membuat tokoh antagonist se-transparan ini.

Kalau saya jadi Sara, SULIT SEKALI utk mencintai apalagi memaafkan Jared. Ironis sekali bukan?

Plot yg dibentuk ttg penculikan Jared terasa mengada-ada supaya memperpanjang cerita. Begitu pula kemunculan banyaknya "bintang tamu" Jacobsville. Tambah bertele-tele saja ceritanya. Kesimpulan: Belum ada perubahan "rasa" utk tulisan tante Diana Palmer. Selalu mustahil dan nonsense eksekusi ceritanya. Bikin kapok bacanya.

Liked this one better than the previous DP I just read. Jared was quite a jerk in the beginning and a real charmer after (oh and here comes the sarcasm) sweetly making love to our innocent nineteen - that's right, she's nineteen - year old virgin heroine. However, after that scene we really don't see a return to that asshat male.

Jared did have some issues, like the death of his daughter that he deals with in this book. Sara also has her own issues after a tragic childhood. I'm not sure why DP throws in these heroines that have some kind of brain impairment. This is the second one, that I can recall, with a heroine who has some kind of head trauma or similar. It is mentioned and then only briefly touched on in the book. I just think these little category romances don't really have the space to deal with something like that which is probably why it is mentioned once and then pretty much ignored through the rest of the book.

How these DP heroines stay so innocent is a bit ridiculous. It's a little hard to swallow at times but I still enjoy reading them. :)

However, I did enjoy the angst in this one and I liked the characters better in this one, than in Heartbreaker (Long, Tall Texans). This had a bit of that angsty goodness.

Yet another typical Diana Palmer book. It's got all her staple themes. I liked it for the most part. But I really do wish she would give some variation in her H/H's. Just because you want a hard-hearted, emotionally cut-off hero doesn't mean he has to act like a total bastard. And you can have an morally-upright heroine without having her always be a naive virgin. Even though I usually can enjoy one of her books, I just get frustrated because the relationships always come off the same, and there's no need for it to be that way.

So anyway, this is a good book for the hardcore DP fans, but probably not for others.

Oh, and I have to give bonus points for the anonymous mention of a Mythbusters episode ;)

3 ⭐⭐⭐ - OK decent reads.
======================

Advogada, amante, é tudo a mesma coisa. Diga a Jared que liguei. E desligou.

Jared sequer perguntara primeiro.

Quem a conhecia, podia perceber.

Agora, sabia a verdade.

Eu a mandei embora — disse Jared.

— Jared me mandou — disse ela, rudemente.

Diana Palmer is the Queen of writing cowboy stories. There are some writers who write westerns and are climbing the ladder and I'm happy for them. but The Long tall Texans, I think right now will continue to be my favorites. lol

Jared Cameron is a loner but Sara Dobbs thinks he is an Ogre. Very interesting. This book introduces Tony the Dancer, who I hope gets his own book. I'm a fan, what can I say?

I've had a hard time trouble distinguishing between all the Diana Palmer books I've read, especially because I sometimes go on Diana Palmer binges! This was one of the books I seemed to have forgotten that I've read, until I looked at my booklist and found that this was on my finished list! Nevertheless, I love DP and will happily purchase all her books! Which I intend to do after I get my new shelving unit built!

Reread. H was rude at first, and I always liked to read how h talked back to H, so as to made H mad. I didn't like the way their first time happened, though. Not romantic at all and led to all the incidents later. The ending felt rushed.

This was The 1st Diana Palmer book I ever read. I picked it off the library shelf because the picture on the cover made me think it was a western. I was 12 or 13.. it was definitely not what I expected but "educational" I avoided boys for a while. Just reread it 15 or so years later.
It's definitely not up to 2022 standards of a healthy relationship. Man is a jerk to a 19 year old girl in a book store. They run into each other and decide be family. He kisses her but doesn't try to form a relationship but gets super jealous while also having a hot live in lawyer. He then basically forces himself on the girl because he was to into it to notice that she is shaking and crying. Then his is passed off at her some more. She might be preggerd and he demands that no other guy will raise his kid he wanted her to abort. Then she throws a vase at him and forgives him. They have some good sex and she gets her period and a emu. The end.
But somehow the story draws you in and it's a enjoyable read until you think about it. This must be how women get into crappy relationships.

Sara vs Jared Cameron

Oh my goodness. This. This book was truly awful. Usually I don't mind Diana Palmer's romances, but this was just a travesty. The sexual consent of the heroine is questionable at best, and the hero is just kind of an asshole. Yeah, he falls in love with her and offers to make an honest woman out of her, but is that really what's important? Like that redeems him? Yeah, no.

OK even though it was stupid as all get out, I gave it four stars because I was *entertained* by the stupidity.

Pop quizzing young girls about WWII generals in a graveyard? Classic seduction technique don'cha know! Bitch slaps at the Parks mega BBQ? Yes please. Seppuku in the Book Nook? Yeah baby!

The H in this one was a complete and total scummy loser: he neglected his daughter when she was alive, he's *terrible* at sex, he has no friends, he freaks out big time at the very idea of marriage and babies, then grudgingly stumbles into commitment with the h because 'meh why not, work is getting dull anyway'. The 'love' confessions at the end are totally bogus, and I don't buy the HEA. I award this H deadbeat dad, and deadbeat husband of the year awards in advance, he's going to SUCK at both.

Ten shining stars for Tony, please please let him have his own book down the line.

Cash watch: oh yes, loads of Cash. People talking about how great Cash is, Cash dancing at the BBQ, Cash setting a trap for terrorists. And of course we see and hear from Tippy... fucking Tippy, whyyyyy does DP keep bringing this bitch back as though we the reader are just DYING to catch up with the Tipster? No, go away Tippy, we all hate you.
