This is the second time that I have read this book. I could not remember very much of the story at all which surprised me.
Laura had dreams, she was born of a poor family and she lost her mother when she was about 18, to consumption. Not long after that she lost her father to pneumonia, then her younger brother, just after he turned 18 and had joined the Navy to the war as he was being taken prisoner to Japan. Her first love Alex was lot in a riding accident before their relationship could be made public. So much bad luck in a short period of time.
Laura was talented in the making of hats to start with and many other things along the way. She married Eddie Ashworth hoping to fall in love with him later but his personality and jealously stopped that happening. Her brother Frank, who she had never really been close to, introduced her to an American, Jack Beaumont, who she fell in love with. Jack fell in love with Laura as well, but she was married and he had his own problems that he did not want to share with Laura.
I really did enjoy this story of Laura and Jack and all things in between. I would highly recommend it.
This is a lovely Aussie story written in an easy to read manner. It is a lovely portrayal of what it was like in the early 1900s. The characters are believable, and the story moves along at a good pace. Enjoy. I will certainly come back to this author.
