Ah, so this is where the other timelines start to bleed through. Rika shows how she feels about the future, how it all seems futile. Keiichi starts "remembering" things. This just makes the story that much sadder.

Despite where things left off, it quickly turns out that Rena’s going to have to shoulder both halves of her folie a deux by herself (it makes sense, trust me). With her paranoia spiralling out of control, it’s up to Keiichi to really step up for a change, but he’s got a long string of failures of his own both from this current life and his others...

Phew, this volume goes fast and furious. We start off with Keiichi being supportive, then too supportive, then not supportive enough. I love the way he takes apart Rena’s theory about what’s happening (although I still think it’s the best one presented thus far) and ends up breaking it down as a serious delusion - wonderful inversion of the last volume’s ending.

Before you can say ‘cursed book’, however, Rena’s persecution complex has her doubting everything and everyone. She thinks she’s the special somebody who’s got the power to fix everything and, hey, it wouldn’t be Higurashi if it wasn’t doing the perfect slow descent into madness (phew, that scene at the dump where she’s too paranoid to recognize her own salvation...).

Then there’s everything else - it’s been pretty clear that Rika knows the most of what’s going on but has been fighting a losing battle. We learn just how long and at what cost, plus we see a little moment that raises even more questions (while being a touch goofy). The feelings of futility really shine through here.

And then she realizes that Keiichi has gained an awareness that only she previously had and that seems to set them up for the final volume, but not before we learn the likely reason this is called the atonement arc. It sure explains a lot.

It’s hard to come up with different ways to praise how fun this storytelling and various arcs have been. Consistently good, this time around we’re focused especially on forgiveness and second chances.

What I like about that is that Keiichi is working hard on both, but he’s being aided by Rika, who at this point has had more than a few chances and can’t get it right. I mean, the story believes it’s worth trying, but you can’t blame her attitude at the start and how it takes this new wrinkle to get her past the resignation evident in her conversation with Rena.

Four stars, easy peasy. A great treatise on paranoia and twisting reality to fit your paranoia, with all the juicy redemption and fate and friendship parts and usual twists and turns blended in.

"She's so far gone. ... The incident has been plaguing Rena all this time. Her mind can't take it anymore. I thought I had saved Rena...but the truth is...I didn't even come close..."

Rena continues to spiral further and deeper into her paranoia until it’s almost laughable (parasites? clones?? aliens???). It would be funny if, too, if she wasn’t so clearly about to do something dangerous. If Rika wasn’t so burnt out as to not care what happens anymore in this world. If Rena wasn’t so, so close to being absolutely right.

I know the Atonement Arc has been focused on Rena, but the true reason for the arc’s name comes to light during this volume. The focus on Keiichi, his past and his memories, has always been my favorite part of this arc. It’s painful and sad to see Keiichi confront both of them head on, but I’m also so very proud of him.

From this point on, Keiichi becomes an active player alongside Rika in breaking the curse of June 1983, whether he realizes it or not. And the first test of his new resolve is to save Rena from her delusions. Will he be able to avoid the tragedy of this world? The way he and Rika have not been able to for so long?

I rate this 4.5 stars.

While I'm still enjoying this arc and series (as you can see from my rating), I am a little disappointed with some of the things that Rena has started to believe in, it's hard to take her seriously because of some of those things. Plus, I'm not satisfied with what Keiichi has realized, I feel like there's more to it that such a simple answer, there has to be something scientific and or paranormal that's going on. There are a few things that still don't make sense. The series is starting to feel less mysterious, less scary.

Near the end, this volume felt more sad than creepy. If you have read or watch this series, you might be able to figure out why. We also see some of what really happened during the Abducted by Demons Arc.
I'm trying to be really careful not to spoil anything, but it's really hard, so I'm going to stop this here.

I think it’s obvious that the manga and visual novel versions of Higurashi blow the anime right out of the water, but I’ve noticed that the mangas have more of an emotional impact on me. This volume especially made me shed a few tears, already having watched the anime previously, it tore me to pieces when Keiichi was remembering his time in the other worlds and how he had endured the same insanity as Rena. I don’t have the words to explain that right now but I’ll come back to this later.

Shoving one last read book into 2021.

The scenes near the end really spoke to me this time through. Definitely some stuff I've been needing to hear recently, though I don't know how much I'll exactly be able to take to heart, haha.

I am so involved in this story. It's not even funny.
I want to know everything. Other universe?? How did they know each other? What happened etc?
The timeliness are matching up but also aren't. I am confused. Cannot wait to read the next book!

Interesting development happened at the end of the volume, you can feel the end is drawing near. I like this series, it feels as if I am playing a video game.

We're winding down on Atonement, which is the answer arc to the Abducted by Demons storyline. Where ABD really only showed us Keichii's viewpoint of events, Atonement shows us both sides: that of Rena (who is in the same position Keiichi was) and of her friends that are trying to save her.

There's finally a ray of hope in this volume and while I don't want to give away too much, it shows that thing are finally, ever so slowly starting to change in this series. After so much bloodshed and despair it's a welcome addition to the story line and I'm glad to see it. As far as other reveals go, it's interesting to see the opposite viewpoint of things. Many of them are so rational that I'm amazed that I didn't see it the first time around with Keiichi.

Artwork-wise, this is great. There's some really creepy pages that show off Rena's descent from merely insane to full out bug-nuts jumped the train to crazy town. It helps to cast some doubt on whether or not the ray of hope shown in this volume will help our main characters survive this round.

If you've been following along, this is absolutely a volume worth getting. It doesn't fall into some of the tedium that previous volumes have had and if you're a Rika fan, you'll especially like this volume.

From the first time I read about this girl in the first series. I thought she was completely bonkers. Now in this arc you get to see her slowly descend into madness.
