This is one of those books that I would have left for eternity on the shelves of our family library because it is old and the color has faded from years of use. My two year old pulled it out and was instantly obsessed.
I will say that the setting illustrations in this little book are wonderful. The candy forest in the front and back as well as the candy shop were gorgeous. My toddler found the characters’ various travels to be awe-inspiring too.
As a parent, I was a little less thrilled about some other parts of the book. The actual characters are a little creepy looking to the modern eye. The Christianity-based riddles on every other page might be off-putting to some parents as well. I will be honest and say I skipped them completely because they were a little much for my two year old who really only wanted to talk about the balloons and sugarplums. It made the plot of the book a little sparse, but, again, my son seemed to just enjoy reading about where the characters went and who they met.
It is worth 3 stars for the illustrations of the settings alone. I got to explain a lot of new (old?) concepts to my very twenty-first century toddler too (sugarplums actually being a good example), so it was a valuable learning exercise if nothing else.

I just loved reading this book to my three small children and 35 years later. I still remember it well.
