While the day belongs to humans, the night belongs to yokai, supernatural creatures that thrive on human fear. Caught between these worlds is Rikuo Nura. He's three-quarters human, but his grandfather is none other than Nurarihyon, the supreme commander of the Nura clan, a powerful yokai consortium. So, Rikuo is an ordinary teenager three quarters of the time, until his yokai blood awakens. Then Rikuo transforms into the future leader of the Nura clan, leading a hundred demons.
The Three Keikain Siblings Rikuo encounters three siblings from the house of Keikain who are from a generations-long line of yokai hunters. Yura, the sister of the trio, is not sure what to think of Rikuo and seems to be unconvinced as to whether he is friend or foe. But her brothers have other ideas. And the battle that ensues is epic!
My Thoughts:
In this volume, Yura big brothers (only one of which seems to be her actual big brother) have come to Ukiyoe Town to find her. Every time they encounter a yokai, they attack it. To them, yokai are black and humans are white. The behavior of these two makes it pretty obvious that they aren't white at all. I'm pretty sure they both have a screw loose, but especially Mamiru. I don't know what the guy's problem is, but something must have happened to him to make him that way. Ryuji is kind of crazy, but mostly, he's an asshole. He's a good onmyouj, though. He sees Rikuo as a yokai the moment he lays eyes on him and Yura finally has her suspicions confirmed when Rikuo transforms and rescues her once again.
Rikuo goes up against Ryuji first and defeats him, but has some trouble with Mamiru until Kubinashi and the rest of the Night Parade show up. It seems that all the two of them were doing in Ukiyoe Town, anyway was delivering a message to Yura: she's been called home to Kyoto because an old enemy of the Keikain is on the move and killing members of the family. Things seem to be pretty bad, so Yura ends up making her way to Kyoto.
After that, we take a trip to the past to learn about why Nenekirimaru is such an important sword. Ryuji seemed really surprised that a yokai had it since it can only cut yokai. We also get to see how Nurarihyon met Rikuo's grandmother. Nurarihyon really was a hottie back in his heyday. It seems Yuki-Onna's mother had the hots for him, haha.
BTW Nurarihyon pas muda itu GANTENG banget, mirip Rikuo mode Yokai deh, cool tapi si kakek pas muda juga hot banget sih.. 👀
Wowzers... who knew Kurotabo was so hawt?! Nice to have some eye-candy to look at.
Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan, Vol. 7: The Three Keikain Siblings is one of my favorite volumes so far. Powerful opponents, secrets revealed, and peeking into pervy Nurarihyon's past made this volumes all kinds of fun.
The cover artwork is simply stunning. I love the pop of blue on this particular cover. Seeing the characters in color is making me really want to watch the anime now. I bet seeing all the yôkai come to life on screen and in full color must be enchanting. I need to hunt down the anime.
I can't wait to learn more about Nurarihyon's past in the next volume. I actually enjoy the backstory a lot more than Rikuo's story. It's probably because the characters are more like adults and give the story much more depth. This series is really fun!
Lots of stuff happens in this volume! First the title story where Yura's brothers come looking for her with a message. They are not exactly very big brotherly and end up in a huge battle with Rikuo. Needless to say Yura finally finds out the truth about Rikuo. Then we start a short comedic story where Rikuo loses his sword to a Yokai thief and this story serves as an intro to a much larger story arc which goes back into the past to tell how Rikuo's Grandfather and Grandmother met. The book ends on a good note and we can expect the next volume to continue this backstory of Rikuo's heritage. A good volume in the series.
