雁屋哲 Manga writer and essayist extraordinaire Tetsu Kariya graduated from prestigious Tokyo University. Kariya was employed with a major advertising agency before making his debut as a manga writer in 1974, when he teamed up with legendary manga artist Ryoichi Ikegami to create Otoko Gumi (Male Gang). The worlds of food and manga were forever changed in 1983 when Kariya, together with artist Akira Hanasaki, created the immensely popular and critically acclaimed Oishinbo.
Pretty good! Nice to revisit a few characters, like the former picky eater. A few repetitive and meh tropes like “I am sick but am still snobbish about food, despite my family being concerned,” or “I, an elder, am mad at this young man who, although he has reformed, previously had run-ins with the yakuza but frustratingly this young lady likes him.” But I really enjoyed a few stories, like the old lady with her heirloom caviar spoons and the phony xiaolongbao (I don’t think that’s much of a problem here in the US now, but it might have been in Japan in the 80s). The brown vs. white rice story is also something I’m sure I’ll be thinking about often as I eat rice!
