Kris Tualla is pursuing her dream of becoming a multi-published author of historical fiction. She started in 2006 with nothing but a nugget of a character in mind and absolutely no idea where to go from there. She has created a dynasty - The Hansen Series - with six novels currently in line for publication."
Although I should have read the first part of the series first, of course, A Discreet Gentleman of Matrimony was the only book I had at the time, so I started in this one. And with some educated guesses as to events which obviously happened in the first part, I didn't find it annoying that I missed reading the first part, as the book soon had me engrossed :-)
The deaf Baron Brander Hansen and his cousin Niels solve a murder mystery in 18th century Christiania, the capital of Norway (now Oslo, of course). As Brander Hansen is married in the first part of the series, his wife, Regin, also helps solve the current murder mystery. And even though the book has a few historical mistakes, it made a really nice, enjoyable read.
It proved once more the subtle difference of something someone mentioned to me only a few weeks ago: "Deaf people are people with a handicap, they are not handicapped people"...
A discreet gentleman of discovery by vocation, Brander Hansen never expects to get married when he fulfills his aim to become a titled man with a bankrupt estate. Now he is running low on funds and since Barons do not work in trade, he is hesitant to continue his vocation.
Regin Kildalh Hansen loves her husband regardless of him being deaf. She finds him more capable then any of the other men with hearing. She also knows he misses being a discreet gentleman and needs the challenge.
When two men are found dead in the same circumstances, Lord Olson, Branders’ alter ego, is approached to solve the murders. Regin convinces him to resume his investigations and get the commission, but there is a catch: she gets to work with him. A simple investigation gets complicated, as everyone involved seems guilty, and the murderer is nowhere near being caught. Then the investigation turns deadly, and a deaf man has to save his wife before it is too late. Will he?
I am absolutely in love with this book. After a long time, I am reading a really, really good romantic mystery with just the right amount of suspense. The setting is in Norway, a first for me, and the hero is deaf, another first for me. The author has written this book flawlessly. The characters leap off the page. They are vibrant, three-dimensional, and are not perfect, i.e. they have insecurities, get angry, unreasonable, and they make mistakes just like the rest of us. How they resolve them and come to terms with themselves is worth reading. The author has fully justified the lead characters, their personalities and flaws, bringing them to life without spoiling the investigation plot. I love Regin–her spunkiness and how she got her revenge. I love Brander–for being a better man because he is deaf. They are one perfect couple. You can actually feel their chemistry on both an emotional and physical level. The suspense will keep you on the edge. I have actually finished this book in one day and cannot wait to get the next in the series. For now, I am going to get the first book, which I have not yet read. A definite keeper!!
This was an exceptional read Brander and Regin were both as wonderful and engaging as before! I am really enjoying getting to go along on the ride and learning more and more about these two characters they are just that amazing and I can't wait to get started on their next adventure!
2.5 stars. It finishes much more strongly than it begins, but overall I felt was pretty weak. There are several plot points that seemed contrived in order to fill pages but didn't add any real value.
One thing that really bothered me throughout the book was the improbability of one of the main plot points. It's decided to send a baroness undercover as a maid. It is so preposterous that the book can never really recover. Not only is it highly unlikely that a historical character would ever agree to do that, a woman raised as a baroness simply would not know how to function as a servant. Literally every person she came in contact with would know immediately that this "maid" was anything but.
So while I really enjoyed the first book with it's unconventional hero, this is not a series I am inclined to continue.
