Carol Cox has an abiding love for history and romance, especially when it’s set in her native Southwest. As a third-generation Arizonan, she takes a keen interest in the Old West and hopes to make it live again in the hearts of her readers. A pastor’s wife, Carol lives with her husband and daughter in northern Arizona, where the deer and the antelope really do play—within view of the family’s front porch.
Elizabeth Simmons is a young lady who grew up in high society in the 1800s . Finding her life shallow and with little meaning she decides to leave home to care for a former friend of her mother's who lived in Arizona. She has a secret plan to start her own business once her mother's friend gets well again. The story starts out slow and it took a while to draw me in. I didn't give up on it and as I progressed on in the story it grew more interesting and I found it worth the while it took to get to the point of enjoying the book. Soon I found my self captivated by the many turn of events and didn't want to stop reading it. Carol Cox is a new to me author but I would like to read the other 3 books in this series. What I enjoyed the most about this book was the time era it took place in. I like to read historical romance. I like the main character Elizabeth . She wasn't afraid to leave her sheltered life at home and move across the United States to a new life. She didn't let the fact that she was a women hold her back from her dreams of starting a business in a man's world. Land of Promise is book one of the Arizona Territory Brides.
I love early American history books...This focuses on the early history of Arizona. The characters are so fun and spunky, the dialogue is great! While the future turned out differently than expected, it turned out better for the characters than they thought.
I love how Carol Cox created the character Elizabeth Simmons, with courage and independence, at a time when the Women's Suffrage movement was beginning. And how this character was just a little over five feet. Truly a good read!
Loved this Adventure in this book. Great character development! But it wasn' t predictable. You could see that the two Leads were getting closer to each other, but there were several twists. Enjoyed this to the end.
This story was one twist after another, as the characters strived to create the lives they wanted for themselves while dealing with the manipulations and deceit of others. Great plot and well-written characters made this a great read.
I really liked another book by this author. I thought the religious tones of some of the characters was just annoying. Also, the main character was hard to connect with.
Started really strong. Good writing and plot. It's like the author got a lot of help in the beginning and then the editing stopped. I read 75% of this book and just got so uninterested. The main love interests don't meet until halfway threw the book and they go from not knowing each other and distrusting each other to inst best friend and then it got weird cause the romance went no where and felt very flat. The characters were being built well and then just got boring. It is hard to put my finger on what went wrong here but it just didn't hold me at all. This is a Christian book with talk of God.
I enjoyed this story about a young woman finding independence in Arizona away from her affluent family in the East. I appreciated the Christian values/morals of the main characters as they faced struggles in daily life. The characters seemed real. Well done!
This was a cute little Christian romance, boy meets girl, yada yada yada that begins in Philadelphia and ends in Arizona when the west was young and wild and corrupt. While the main character exhibits great moral character, she seems to be in rebellion with her parents, the family she comes to assist during the wife's recovery from an injury, and society itself by being outspoken and a bit liberated for the times. She does submit to the Bartlett family's demands to a point, even though they do not have honorable intentions and Mr. Bartlett secretly gambles away her entire inheritance that was left for safekeeping with him. The characters are shallow, either black or white, and the story is very predictable as it develops, but I still liked it.
Overall an entertaining story, although I was a bit disappointed that we don't get to see a fitting end for the couple who wronged Elizabeth in so many ways...they are just kind of forgotten and it's almost like an entire new plot was taken up with the incident involving Jenny (to me this maybe should have been early in the second book...?)
I enjoyed reading Land of Promise. It had a fair amount of adventure and a lot of romance, which is the way I like books to be. It also ended with a happily-ever-after. No cliffhangers!
I enjoy Carol's books and historical fiction. Elizabeth and Michael's story was an interesting relationship that went through misunderstandings. I hope they continue as characters in the series.
