雁屋哲 Manga writer and essayist extraordinaire Tetsu Kariya graduated from prestigious Tokyo University. Kariya was employed with a major advertising agency before making his debut as a manga writer in 1974, when he teamed up with legendary manga artist Ryoichi Ikegami to create Otoko Gumi (Male Gang). The worlds of food and manga were forever changed in 1983 when Kariya, together with artist Akira Hanasaki, created the immensely popular and critically acclaimed Oishinbo.
My favorite chapters were the one where it showed how authentic fish cakes were made, the kid who wasn’t sure about being a cook + omelette making, and the wasabi marriage one. Had to knock off a full star for the magic teleporting lady. I get that the pattern of needing time to travel to a region is repetitive and maybe the author wanted to diversify story methods, but adding a literally magical person wrenches this story out of the real world and adds a host of unfortunate implications (e.g. why not use these powers for good? Are there others like her?)
