I AM is a great children's book, which slowly introduces young readers to the infinite adult question of 'I am ...?'
The book helps to frame the question through the usage of a riddle. The illustrations by Stacy Heller Budnick are fantastic. Although I don't think my children, ages five and three, quite understand the philosophical depth of this book, I believe it has plated the seeds. And sometimes, that is all one can ask for.
For older children, the back of the book offers six sentences to complete using 'I am' statements. After writing each sentence, the participant is asked to consciously think about how that statement makes them feel. And therein resides this book's greatest gift.
Dr. Dryer beautifully summarizes the book's intent with these words: "Anytime you start a sentence with I am, you are creating what you are and what you want to be." In essence, although this is a children's book, I think many adults, including myself, gain greater insight from this story's empowering plot ... I am now, I am powerful!
