About the author

Haruko Ichikawa (市川春子 in Japanese), born in 1980, is the author and artist of Land of the Lustrous (宝石の国, lit. "Country of Jewels"). She started her career in 2006 with the one-shot Mushi to Uta (虫と歌, lit. Insects and Songs). Between 2007 and 2011, she published seven one-shots in the manga magazine Afternoon, which were later compiled into two individual books named Ichikawa Haruko Sakuhinshuu (市川春子作品集, lit. Haruko Ichikawa Works Collection). She started writing Land of the Lustrous on October 25th, 2012, which currently has 10 volumes.

In 2010 she won the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize for works on Mushi to Uta. She has also contributed characters designs to the games Pokemon Sun & Moon and Pokemon Sword & Shield.

A 25 Hour Vacation is the second collection of works compiled by Haruko Ichikawa. It won 5th place runner-up in the Manga Tashio Awards in 2012. Compared to the author's previous work, which has much more prestige, I preferred this work since it was simple yet delicate in portraying its message.


I loved the first work, A 25 Hour Vacation. The relationship between the brother and sister was complex and reminded me of Star Lover, except this was in a more modern and realistic sense. The sister loves his brother out of what happened during their childhood, and she's unsure how to deal with these feelings as she meets him again, a 20-year-old boy turned into a man. The end was ambiguous and I enjoyed the science fiction aspects. I also loved the symbolism in where the brother helps her sister find new legs as the sister struggles to deal with the reality of what she has done and how her brother cares about her in a way she previously didn't want.

The second work, On Pandora, was something I didn't care for it. It was pretty boring for me and I had a hard time distinguishing the characters. It was too science fiction for me with how the author tried to build this entire world and it just made me tired reading through it.

The last work, A Lunar Funeral, was the work I enjoyed the most. The relationship between the two brothers was very well done. The imagery where the lunar prince sends out meteors for his adopted brother was beautiful. They truly felt like family as the brother sits on the prince's death bed, wanting everything for him to be better. The confessions and the prince telling the truth just develops their bond as something beyond the circumstance. Everything about it made me smile since everything fell into place so wonderfully.


Overall, this work feels much more close to Houseki no Kuni, especially with the relationships and the similarities of art between the characters. Comparing this to that work might prove very interesting. The collection is something you could read repeatedly and you would still feel like you were missing something. If you didn't enjoy the first collection, you may have a hard time digesting this one. However, I still liked both in their own ways.

Tal vez 3.5/5 estrellas. El concepto destrás de estas historias lo disfruté mucho más que los del primer tomo, en especial la segunda. Aun así, se me sigue haciendo algo difícil a veces seguir el hilo argumentativo en ciertas instancias de cada capítulo, más que nada por la forma en que la autora utiliza la sobre exposición explicativa por sobre el arte, "decir más que mostrar", en sus mangas. Aunque esto no nos resta de contemplar ciertos paneles donde su arte realmente deslumbra. Independiente de esto, se me hizo una lectura agradable, aunque solo la segunda historia realmente llamó mi interés.

Segundo tomo recopilatorio de historias de manga cortas de la mangaka e ilustradora Karuko Ichikawa.

Las historias siguen el hilo de las publicadas en el primer tomo donde la fantasía se apodera de todas las historias dando origen a historias subrealistas, originales, creativas y extrañas.

Las historias de este segundo tomo, a mi particularmente, me han resultado menos interesantes que en la primera publicación aunque se siguen tocando los mismos temas, sentimientos asociados a la soledad, amor, amistad, generosidad, etc.

Este segundo volumen tuvo tres historias un poco más largas y mucho más interesantes que la primera, lidiando con los mismos temas: ciencia ficción biológica, humanos sintéticos y relaciones familiares. El dibujo de la autora es simple pero expresivo y con mucha personalidad, muy adecuado para los momentos surreales. Fue una lectura bastante interesante.
