Verse-by-verse commentary on the New Testament letters of James and 1-2 Peter.
The letters of James and 1-2 Peter are often called general epistles, because they were written to all Christians in general, rather than a specific group of Christians in one city. As such, they are filled with the kind of practical wisdom everyone needs to live a life that pleases God.
The Pastor of our church gave us the assignment to read the Book of James this week. Since James is short, I figured I’d have time to do a quick study. I did a search for a study of James and found this free resource on the internet. It seems to be a pretty popular guide, and since it wasn’t free on amazon, I stuck to the internet version.
This is a sentence by sentence study guide. Every sentence is broken down and elaborated on in some way. I thought the overall quality was good. Since, I enjoy learning about words and translation challenges, I found the information about etymology particularly interesting. First and Second Peter were included in this book, so I used this resource and reread those books as well.
My only complaint about this book is that, in the James study, Guzik takes the opportunity to attack another denomination. I think he should let his guidance and interpretation and the Word of God stand on their own. People, generally, don't need any help pointing fingers and judging one another.
