The Victorian house comes in all shapes, sizes and materials. The legacy of this hugely influential era can be found in every region of England, from the majestic rows of gleaming white terraces in WestLondon to the grid of red-brick houses in northern mill towns. Using his own drawings, diagrams and photographs, the author, Trevor Yorke, explains, in an easy to understand manner, all aspects of the Victorian house andprovides a definitive guide for those who are renovating, tracing the history of their own house or are simply interested in this notable period. The book provides a background to different phases of design throughout theVictorian age from the 1830s to the early 1900s. Various areas are considered in detail, including the layout and use of rooms; fixtures and fittings; sources of heat and lighting, domestic machinery such as kitchen ranges andlaundry equipment; and gardens and outbuildings. Also included is a quick reference guide with notes on dating houses, recommended books, places to visit and a glossary of the less familiar architectural terms.
I love these little books. Bought the whole series, one at a time, from the local garden centre. I have an interest in local history and a bit of architecture - and I like to look things up after a walk maybe; these are ideal. A lot of books on architecture are a tad deep, steeped in arcane, convoluted and impenetrable jargon but these are just right. I read this one through from end to end recently. Most impressive and Mr Yorke's drawings are spot on. It comes with a useful timeline and glossary. Can't wait to get out into the avenues and byways again.
I read this right after Yorke's Georgian and Regency Houses Explained, and I liked the flow of information. Yorke does a good job of briefly describing the surrounding eras, so you get an idea of how house styles changed over time. I like how concise the books are. They are packed with useful information, and I like the pictures.
Lovely illustrations compliment the text. This compact book takes a thorough look at features assosiated with this era. Maintains the readers concentration well and can be happy read from start to finish or dipped into for the specific areas you are interested in. I quite happily read straight through and liked it so much I went on to buy more from the series.
