It should have been Craig Campbell’s dream job, working for a rock star who was his boyhood hero. But when the target of his investigation is murdered, Craig is the prime suspect. Despite the police suspicions, The Reluctant Detective is released and begins his own pursuit of the killer. His investigations bring him to the attention of a Glaswegian drug lord with a vested interest in the case. Craig's own safety is threatened and he is ready to walk away but as the body count mounts he feels compelled to continue the hunt. Rival drug gangs, jealous musicians, a disturbed rival and a crazed voice from the past are all possible suspects. Craig must find the killer before the finale of their murderous performance brings the curtain down on another life.
One of the best constructed novels by Sinclair Macleod in The Reluctant Detective series. Following in the great tradition of Scottish crime 'tartan noir'.
Needed a better editor. Ebook version was littered with typos and the large font was rubbish. I might have an old version as I downloaded a few months ago and just got round to it. Editor should Ctrl+F the word 'coffee' and just delete all references. The same with references to his mother which have now been in every book with relatively little development in that relationship despite fairly major events happening.
The plots are strong but the turn of phrase is often clunky and characterisation too obvious. Suspects/witnesses were all a bit too helpful in this one. They need to be given reasons to help rather than just do it because the detective belligerently asks them to.
This book would benefit from the wisdom of a good editor and proofreader. Too many little details left disconnected are distracting. The story is a bit lame and the character motivation implausible but it's a harmless read to fill a lazy afternoon.
This was a pretty good mystery. I do like the lead character but didn't particularly like the action or the other characters. I have enjoyed some of the other books in this series better.
