Joe Hunter avenges the murder of two people: William Murray, a small-time crook, and Candice Berry, a hooker, by tricking their killer. Poetic justice as the murderer falls off a roof - his own method of killing.

This is a sad day indeed. This was the last Joe hunter for me to read, I hope that Matt Hilton sometime in the future will write more books about this character. The upside is that there are other books from this author to read. and I will try to do that. This was a great short story and it contained some twists I didn't see coming and as usual it was tols very well. I can really recommend this author.
William Murray sold stuff illegal, but he was a nice little guy. When he supposedly committed "suicide" by jumping off the roof of crime boss Mick O'Neill's building, Hunter knew what actually happened. O'Neill and four witness claimed they didn't didn't even know Murray had jumped until the ruckus of arriving police cars alerted them. But there was only one elevator that went to the penthouse and one needed a key to make it work.
Hunter was ready to go in then, but his partner Rink calmed him down. That would only get him in jail for murder. Better to wait a bit. And plan.
But when prostitute Candace Berry was found shot in the back of the head, Hunter knew he couldn't wait any longer. Candace was another friend who plied her trade to support two children. Her pimp answered to O'Neill.
So he went in. With a plan. O'Neill would pay, just not in the manner one would think.
Joe Hunter has a problem with criminals. he likes to help the underdog. When William Murray takes a nose dive from Mick O'Neill's penthouse, Hunter is not happy. Within days Candice berry turns up dead. Now it is personal. Hunter tackles Marvin 'Moby Dick' Whalen and his two enforcers. They were responsible for Candice's death so they must pay. But Whalen works for Micky O'Neill and he must pay. Rather than take direct action Hunter breaks in and lets himself get captured. Mickty can' help himself and confesses to William's murder and for Candice's death. The problem Hunter is wired up for the cops. In the ensuing struggle Micky 'throws' himself out of the 14th floor. case closed.
What a stinker. I only made through a chapter and a half.
FYI, if an undercover cop tells you he or she is not a cop, that's definitely NOT grounds for an entrapment defense. Can't imagine why the author thought otherwise.
