A Series of Unfortunate Events #4-6

A Series of Unfortunate Events Collection: Books 4-6

Rate this book
A Warning from the Publisher:

Imagine you are wearing a bandage that needs to be removed. Are you the sort of person who tears the bandage right off, causing an enormous amount of pain in a short instance? Or do you prefer to spread your pain out over a longer period of time, by slowly unpeeling the bandage from your injury?

If you are the first type of person, then this three-book electronic collection might be for you. All of the misery and woe available in three Lemony Snicket volumes—The Miserable Mill, The Austere Academy, and The Ersatz Elevator—have been joined into one compactly miserable package, so readers foolish enough to read about the Baudelaire orphans can be unnerved in a slightly more economical fashion.

If you are the second type of person, then volumes 4 through 6 in A Series of Unfortunate Events might be for you. Even if you unwisely choose to read them at a more leisurely pace, you will encounter such atrocities as poorly paid employees, a hypnotist, an evil scheme, a gym teacher, dripping fungus, another evil scheme, a fake accent, three mysterious consonants, a red herring, and at least one more evil scheme.

Of course, most people would prefer not to be injured at all. We salute these sensible people, who will doubtless not purchase any books by Lemony Snicket, no matter how conveniently bundled.

My seven-year-old and I finished this round tonight and he turned to me and said, “mommy, I want you to read ahead while I’m at school tomorrow so you can tell me if Olaf dies at the end of The End. If he dies, we’ll throw a ‘yay that bad guy is dead!’ party and if he doesn’t, we’ll pitch a ‘why why why why’ tantrum party!”

Reviewing every third book bc they’re so short I consider each trio to comprise of one entire regular book (for the sake of my reading challenge). Anyway, this series remains as brilliant and engaging and unique as ever. The absurdist situations and comedic tone balance the bleak journey of the Baudelaires magnificently, and I’m glad it all still holds up even after the many years that have passed since the first time I read them.

Conclusion ?

📌 Introduction du sucrier dans la série.

Has my 9 year old asking to read more!

We started the series at the start of the US shut downs in March as a way to keep reading for school but without boring him like most of the 2nd grade level books were. After the first series he was hooked and now every night it’s “I’m going to read without you if you aren’t ready” and “can we just read one more chapter please”. Highly recommend

Great read

Awesome series. Even as an adult I enjoy them, they're fast reads and they keep my attention. I definitely recommend them.

The grown-ups in these books are delightfully mocked.

Part 4 of series. Very well written for a young audience. The orphans saga takes them to a mill to hide out but they were forced to work and not fed, again.

tired

Just not good in any way shape or form. I don’t get why these books are popular in the least.

Pretty consistent. I'm getting more attached to the characters now. Snicket is getting better at slipping the word definitions in with humor, which I appreciate.

Unfortunately, I'm getting a little bored of the formula. I can handle the -new location-disguised Olaf-kids save the day- thing. That's fun. I just need to stop hearing each individual child explain that they hope their singular skill is useful. "I hope I can invent something." "I hope I can research something." "Gahbada" ("I hope I can bite something.")

Still, it's fun to read and I might not notice the repeated dialogue so much if I wasn't reading them all in a row, so I'm going to go ahead and give this a four again.

Box 2 of 4 of the Snicket series. The Situation Worsens. Like the first three books, these were a great read! Unlike the first three that the movie were based on, with these I didn't have any pre-set images in my head when I read them. Although the main actors where lurking around! I'm still not sure about the meaning of the word ERSATZ, but that didn't stop me having a really good time reading. Can't do anything else than highly recommend everyone to read this box set!

Again all the adult in the story are complete idiots - I swear they haven't got one brain cell with in their heads to understand the easiest things to figure out.

Mostly all the adults in this series are annoying, idiotic beings. As Count Olaf has said in the past 'No one ever listens to children.' No duh! But this is the only way the series would exist if the adults weren't like this way but still its still frustrating.

The series is so predicable - Children get taken to new home with people they don't know and should never trust, hey what did you know the Count is back to kill the orphans at said home, the kids try to convince cruel Mr. Poe that the Count is back - he doesn't believe them, the kids show the proof, the Count escapes before he can be arrested and swears that he'll get them next time, and Mr. Poe takes the kids to another new owner that is not nice. And repeat and that's how all the book have been so far and will always be until the last book hopefully - fingers cross.

I just hope this series gets better and less predicable, but for now I'm taking a break with this series. I need some relaxing 'me' time.

Again, Lemony Snicket made me laugh so hard, I love his sense of humour, his style of writing, and the illustrations in the books. I love the bevelled pages and the retro-style hardcovers. I loved everything about these books, including how the narrator tries to steer us clear of how terrible they are, and into much happier books with heartwarming plotlines. I think these are very different from the regular children's books, and I would love children who think outside the box to find them. The movie was good, but it does not do the series justice!!!

The new Netflix adaptation made me crave these. I can't believe I never finished this series when they were coming out; I think I was just slightly too old for them at the time, but now I am truly appreciating how clever they are.

Well, it's hard to review these as a collective when this is actually three books. Yes, they are slightly ridiculous. The Austere Academy and The Ersatz Elevator are definitely some of the weaker links in the series, but this is all about building the mystery.
