Secrets at Sunset: Forbidden Romance Novella, is a stand alone novella by Juliette Cross.
Reed Robicheaux was practically raised by the Hebert family. He is best friends with Jonah Hebert and spent enough time with them growing up to be thought of as part of the family. Since the first time he met the youngest Hebert sibling, the only girl in the family, Anna, he’s been taken with her. But she was just a child. He watched her grow up, always knowing she deserved much better than him. And that she was off limits as his best friend’s little sister.
Anna Hebert has known Reed since she was little. She’s been in love with him just as long. She grew up, dated, went to college, always comparing any man she knew to Reed. No one ever compared. Now at twenty two years old, she’s ready to start her career, only her family doesn’t agree with what she wants to do. So she goes to Reed for help, offering cooking and cleaning in trade. Which means they will be spending lots of alone time together. With the help of a little extra alcohol one night, some secrets are spilled, and Anna and Reed’s relationship is forever changed.
This little story was so cute. I loved the Hebert family. The brothers are all quirky and fun. I love the way they just sort of absorbed Reed into their lives at an early age. This had the most wonderful ending. This story made for such an enjoyable afternoon read.

This was a cute and light brother's best friend romance where the H and h have known each other since they were kids. Both have been interested in each other for years, but held back, and the H is 6 years older than the h (which isn't really an age gap to me).
The prologue is from when the h is a teen and the H rescues her from a situation. Then, years later, they end up working together on a secret project of the h's, keeping it from her family, which ramps up the tension and attraction between them. Despite a bit of angst and pushing away, they do end up on the same page and going all in with each other. A couple of steamy scenes, a touch of family pushback (not about what you think it'd be), and a sweet HFN that's more of a HEA since it's clear they're in it for the long haul even if some of the future stuff isn't on page. I liked their friends and the h's family. I also liked that the H was blue collar, working construction, and that the h was starting her own business, a dance studio. Written in first person, dual POV. No ow/om drama (although one of the H's friends flirts with the h and gets him jealous) and neither are virgins (no details given on their histories, although the H's friend says he thought the H hadn't gotten laid for a year).

So fun to stroll back to Beauville and see what's happening.
This fun little novella is a Brother's Best Friend, forced proximity, grumpy sunshine delight!
I loved the set up for this story and seeing their history and previous feelings made it easy to jump right into the story and enjoy this quicky. So often with novellas it's difficult to connect with the couple in the limited time we have, but because of the prologue and the family connection, it is easy to see how these two already have some feelings cooking in the background. We just get to hop in and enjoy as the tension boils over.
We still manage to feel see some good character growth and watch them come into their feelings for each other. There is a lot on the line due to her brother and his best friend, but love cannot be denied.
And we still manage to get some good and meaningful steam (that mirror scene!). This sweet novella is the perfect treat for a late summer night.

4.5 stars! Secrets at Sunset is such a cute small town, brother’s best friend romance novella from Juliette Cross! This does exist in a small town series she has written in before, but it can definitely be read on its own.
Reed is Anna’s brother’s best friend and has been in her life for years. She’s secretly been crushing on him for so long! Anna has always dreamed of opening her own dance studio in their small hometown of Beauville, but her family doesn’t think it’s the right time yet for her to make such a risky business move. Tired of waiting, and with a little encouragement from Reed, Anna impulsively decides to drop her savings into a building! She goes to Reed for help in renovating the current office space into her dance studio dream. In return for his reno help, she offers to cook and clean for him.
“It was like that feeling you get on a roller coaster when you’re climbing that first steep incline. Your stomach is tight, butterflies are building, and your nerves are bearing down and getting you ready for the exciting big drop. That’s how I felt every time I was with Reed. Except we never got to the big drop. Not yet anyway. But a girl could dream.”
I just adored these 2 together! I love so many of Juliette’s books, but this small town novella was extra sweet! I loved the forbidden, sneaking around element of this and seeing how possessive Reed is. Delivers on the family dynamics, small town charm, side characters, and of course the steamy romance too!

Triggers: Assault
Liked: Loved all of it! It was very low angst, but I loved that it wasn’t full of annoying push and pull. Instead you couldn’t help but root for these two. Plus their chemistry was on fire, even the slightest touches get you all hot and bothered!
Disliked: I would have loved for it to have been full length, I always want more background and depth that novellas miss.
OM/OW: OM forces himself on h, but H stops him. No OW mentioned. H not a manwhore.
I need another Beauville book now!

A sweet novella with two likable characters who grew up together. Everyone can see they have been crushing on each other for years but don't act on it. It's not as big a secret as they think.
I find this storyline intriguing. The anticipation and build-up are exciting. It worked here, very well.
Once the big reveal happens, which I loved, the descriptive sex in odd places seemed forced to me and out of character for these two. All of a sudden we have two porn stars. Big ole side eye for the unnecessary sex. The bonus chapter brings the love story back to where it needs to be.
Minus stars for the cookie-cutter sex.

DANG!! I missed being in Beauville! Anna and Reed burn up the pages with their mutual pining, brother’s best friend romance.
Anna is back in Beauville and needs Reed’s help to make her dreams of owning and operating her own dance studio a reality. He’s got the chops to renovate her dream space and she’s got the cooking skills he sorely lacks. Their deal only adds to their longing and soon the time spent together only adds heat to the fire!
Juliette Cross is hands down one of my favorite authors ever. She writes heroines who are smart, independent, and fierce. Her heroes are the perfect complement to these strong women. Reed and Anna are perfect examples of this.
I absolutely love and recommend!

I have been so focused on the Stay A Spell books that I didn't even know that I needed this best friends sister romance from Juliette Cross. This story (set in Beauville that companions her previous two contemporary romances) is about Anna and Reed. Reed is Anna's brother's best friend and sees her has completely off limits. When she starts a project and needs his help, their close proximity leads to sparks and FLAMES. It's a quick novella, but just enough to leave us all wanting more from Juliette Cross.

I love this sweet romance! Reed and Anna are made for each other and they gave me all the pining and steam that I needed! Beauville is the perfect small town romance series and I can’t wait to read more stories set in this world.

Characters: Reed and Anna
This is a quick novella in the Beauville series
I don’t know why but I didn’t love this.
We are first introduced to Anna (15) and Reed is 21-22 (i think) and Anna is at a mature party that she doesn’t feel safe at, so she calls her brother but Reed picks up the phone. He goes to the party just in time, because another guy is trying to assault her.
Then we have a time jump (I’m not always a fan of that, especially in novella’s), the author could have skipped over that whole beginning scene, because I didn’t feel comfortable knowing that he had feelings for her since they were younger (there is at least a 7 year age gap). When you are older, it doesn’t really matter with having an age gap, but she was basically a child when he started having sexual feelings towards her. It gave off the creeper vibes 🤷🏻♀️.
Then 7 years goes by (so she’s around 21-22) and he’s around 29, and he’s still sexually attracted to her and she’s had feelings for him for years.
She wants to open up a dance studio and her family doesn’t want her too, and I wasn’t a huge fan of her family and how they didn’t believe that she could do it on her own (her family rubbed me the wrong way). She’s an adult and she needs to make those decisions for herself. The only person who pushes her to pursue her dreams is Reed.
I wasn’t a huge fan of the sex scenes in this, Reed goes from treating her like broken glass to dominating her in the bedroom.
I don’t know what it is, but i have not been feeling contemporary romances lately, everyone keeps trying to cater to the TikTok crowd, where the sex scenes feel more like fucking and less about passion and love.

Oh man, this had me ALL OVER THE PLACE!
As usual, Cross delivers on the INSANE sexual tension. I was holding my breath half the time over their chemistry. At one point the author references the point when you're going up on a roller coaster, knowing you're about to go over the top and down, and that's exactly why I love her books! So much is insanely gripping. The intensity. I'm just blown away at what page turners her books always turn out to be.
There were emotional scenes, especially the bonus one at the very end, literally made me cry out loud. Oh man. SO GOOD.
HOWEVER, I literally went "BOOOO!" when he realized after sex that he'd "forgotten a condom." LAME. NO. And he was too "alpha" for me at certain points as well. Anna seemed to like it though, which is what counts, I suppose, LOL. I did appreciate the role reversal when Reed was telling her that he belonged to her during sexy times. I think the problem with a novella can be that there isn't enough character development, and my issue was related to that. I felt like I didn't have enough examples as to why they would work. I get opposites attract, but I needed a bit more of their connection that WASN'T sexual. This was a good try for a novella, though.

I love how Reed puts her first, keeps her secrets, but also acknowledges the emotional risk to himself. If her parents don't come around, he could loose the only father figure he's ever known and a best friend who is more like a brother. Reed is willing to risk it all for her dream, but is he willing to put everything on the line for love when he believes that he isn't the kind of man she wants?
Juliette Cross creates characters that I connect with, and Anna and Reed grabbed hold of my heart from the first. I loved every minute of this book; Secrets at Sunset was the perfect summer afternoon read that put a smile on my face, left me feeling satisfied with the ending, but also hopeful that I will get a glimpse of Anna's brother's in the future.

I picked up this novella on a whim and I am so happy I did. I love Juliette Cross and now I need to read the other books in this series. This may be a novella but Juliette managed to tell a full story with great characters. This was a sweet brother's best friend romance.
Anna has had a crush on her brother's best friend, Reed for many years. She has no idea he also has had feelings for her, but he felt like he could never go there with her. Now, Anna has graduated college and want to open her own dance studio but her parents don't support that decision. I loved this sweet brother’s best friend romance. This is a heartwarming and steamy romance portraying lovable and relatable characters with a touch of angst. Reed is a construction foreman in a small town. He is 7 years older than Anna and her brother’s best friend. They’ve known each other since they were children. Reed has always been attracted to Anna but also felt she would never look at her twice. Anna feels exactly the same way. Everything changes when Anna asks Reed to help her with the renovation on her new dance studio. Despite being short, the story was well written and included witty dialogue, big feels, three dimensional characters and an engaging storyline. 4.5 stars.

This book broke me out a reading slump! The perfect shot of hot forbidden romance with a side of idiots (affectionately said) to lovers. It is everything I love about Juilette's writing, but in novella. Not that I wouldn't have read this story as a full-length novel, but it was perfect just as it is.

Just finished this book and it was so freaking perfect!! For a shorter novella I didn’t know how much I’d get into it. But honestly I fell for these characters, got invested in their sweet friendship to romance and truly want more of them now!! That bonus content ending was the cherry on top of the sundae for me!!

Depsite being a novella this felt fleshed out and like a full story which I loved!

This is a sweet, low angst novella set in a small Louisiana town. It’s brother’s best friend, but not the obnoxious way. I loved Anna and Reed together. 4.5 stars
