Sanctuary, a Japanese manga series which obviously has a lot of influence on the Japanese and/or Hong Kong gangster movie genre.
Premise: years ago a pair of war orphans made a vow to reform the Japanese society, to change it from a society controlled by old men and corrupted politicians to a land of hopefulness where youngsters could decide the country's fate. Being a pair of nobodies with no wealth and family background to support them, they wouldn't do things the slow and legal way: instead one of them would join the Yakuza, the other one would climb up the ladder of political power, and tried to use political power and violence as their weapon to get to their final goal, regardless of the price they and those around them must pay.
Wow, it's refreshing to see two young fellow trying to do something akin to The Meiji Restoration! And they are doing it with violence, sex, blackmail, dog-eats-dog and their sheer wits!
I can't help comparing this first volume with Akira, I think the manga-kas of both series tried to explore the possibility of the reform of the society and human's heart and mind through the extreme ways.
Hand down, it's another manly and heroic manga series which is set in the 1990s Japan, and it is based on the story from the author who penned Fist of the North Stars?, no wonder! But I'm not surprised by some of the icky way of how women were described in the story. =__=
