Steven graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1993, receiving a bachelor of science in English literature. He served the next eight years on active duty, traveling the world as a naval officer assigned to various Navy and Marine Corps units. His extensive journey spanned the globe, including a two-year tour of duty in Japan and travel to more than twenty countries throughout Asia and the Middle East.
From enforcing United Nations sanctions against Iraq as a maritime boarding officer in the Arabian Gulf, to directing aircraft bombing runs and naval gunfire strikes as a Forward Air Controller (FAC) assigned to a specialized Marine Corps unit, Steven's "in-house" experience with a wide range of regular and elite military units brings a unique authenticity to his thrillers.
He still wakes up at "zero dark thirty" to write for most of the day. When "off duty," he spends as much time as possible outdoors or travelling with his family--and dog.

The flow of the Black Flagged series keeps things interesting. Steve, if you're reading this review, you've done a great job with this concept. I implore anyone who is a military/spy/action fan to get every book written by this author.
Just as planned. That's the best way to summarize the major players and their schemes within schemes throughout this omnibus. I don't want to give too much away, but let's just say that reading these books during a pandemic may not have been the best decision. If you like seeing things play out both as planned and not as planned, this is a good set of books to read. Onward to book 6!
Years ago, I'd read every book written by Tom Clancy. I then started looking for new authors of action thrillers involving terrorist plots, spys, CIA, FBI, assassins, military, government plots and the like. I loved the Jason Bourne series by Robert Ludlum and a number of James Rollins books. They had a lot of action but not as much detail as a Clancy novel. I've also liked stories by Vince Flynn and the Brit in the FBI series by Catherine Coulter. Still one of my favorite authors with his Jake Grafton (e.g. Flight of the Intruder) and Tommy Carmellini series of books is Stephen Coonts. His military background brings some great realism to his stories. And now, I am so glad to have found Steven Konkoly. I started with his Ryan Decker books and have now finished his Black Flagged series. Both are absolutely terrific. The Black Flagged series is actually one long story where the next books picks up on where the previous books left off. The story line involves a wonderfully trained and skilled man and his wife and the group that trained them. But the story has so many other wonderful characters and plot twists that you never become bored. The story and sub-stories involve biological terrorism, Russians, CIA, FBI, POTUS and high ranking cabinet members, military contractors, all sorts of weaponry and electronic surveillance and more. Steven Konkoly has a military background himself and he adds terrific military details and realism to his stories. The way he describes scenes and the action in those scenes makes me feel like I'm right there. I feel like I'm part of the family of main characters. There is so much going on in the Black Flagged series that I've probably forgotten to mention other important points. As you can tell, I thoroughly enjoyed Steven Konkoly's Black Flagged series and look forward to reading more stories from him. And since it took me awhile to find him, I look forward to seeing if there are other authors who can best him.
Book two starts out a bit slow, introducing us to new players and a little recap from the previous book. Daniel and Jessica remain with Black Flag, primarily as instructors. Although Sanderson does get them out heading up a team for special missions. A deadly encephalitis virus has been set loose on a Russian city. The Black Flag team has been dispatched to pick-up the scientist responsible before the Russians find him. Book three follows several U.S. Government task forces, FBI agents, CIA operatives, and Black Flag operators looking for the last terrorist cell and the missing virus canisters. As you can imagine government agencies have difficulty communicating, collaborating, and working together towards a mutual goal. Regrettably, at several points, it’s rather funny; in a Keystone Cop sort of way. A domestic terrorist group is revealed to be connected with the Middle Eastern terrorists. What role they may play in the encephalitis plot is unknown at this time. Book four picks up after the bottled water fiasco. If you thought the story was over after that, think again. The scientist Reznicoff is not done with his scheming. Nor is True America done with theirs. This volume focuses on tying up loose ends. At least, loose ends that were identified at the time. The Russian laboratory, along with the Russian scientist was still live, which would cause future problems. I enjoyed the characters, the plot was well laid out, the action tense and exciting. Aside from a few mispronunciations, the narration was excellent. I may have to finish off the series to see how this all pans out.
Overall this set is 4 stars. This box set includes the three books in the Black Flagged series (Redux, Apex, and Vektor). These books can each be read as a standalone. But each book builds on the previous storylines so I suggest you read them in order. This set makes it easy to do that without trying to find the next book. There is a lot of violence and torture.
The book blurb adequately describes the storyline so I'm not going to repeat that all of that info here. There are clues in the storyline that keep you guessing what will be revealed next. It definitely kept me reading. Overall it is an interesting storyline and worth taking the time to read. I can’t wait to read more of this series!
These are relatively long-worded books, and my major problem with the writing is that there are so many characters and names — it’s nearly impossible (OK, for me — very, very difficult) to keep straight. Other than that, the near-constant action on multiple fronts was good. Unfortunately, the author lost track of at least one situation where damage was done earlier in the book, and totally ignored later — and I’m 99% sure there was at least a couple of consecutive chapters that had a morning time-frame, but the writing alluded to evening ... THAT was confusing.
This box set brought me through Book 4 of the Black Flagged series, and I'm champing at the bit to continue the saga. Konkoly serves up the whole smorgasbord: complex cat & mouse games; techno savvy; characters you care about; political cynicism without partisan axe-grinding by the author; shoot 'em up action; suspense galore--I mean, who can you trust not to stab you in the back?? But the destructive scheming is balanced by instances of fierce loyalty between characters too. I don't know how the guy keeps track of such convoluted twists and turns and a large cast of characters, but he does, and he does it very well.
I am impressed. I have read the entire series. I feel like I have met Daniel some time upon lives path and am glad not to have made him angry. Great work Mr Steven the story lines continued solidly through all 5 books and I without a doubt understand the disclaimer at book 5 truth can be stranger than fiction especially n the period to we live in today . Thanks for your service and thanks for an outstandling read. Steven
Just finished the series, 1-5. I'm thinking Wow, this series is some of the very best. Why did it take me so long to discover this author. I've lost a lot of sleep because I couldn't put the books down. Now I've finished #5 Omega and there are no more books. Is there another book in the series being written? Is there there a time frame for another book? HELP!

This is actually a four book series that is absolutely nuclear powered high intensity non stop action thriller of the highest class!! A top secret covert team is tasked with stopping a deadly plague that can be released in the water system in America.. It's results are devastating and lethal. A test run in a Russian city met with devastating results. Betrayal and deceit at every turn!#! On a one to ten scale .....these books score a hundred!!! I give this series my highest recommendation!!!!
What a ride to this point! If I had not gotten the set of three, where there was no real "review break", I would have written sooner, after each new book...encouraging readers to pick up Steven Konkoly's Black Flag books. Deep levels of detail, dark under the radar ops...a group of operatives that I personally hope exists! I look forward to future Black Flag stories.
These three books are some of the best I have had the pleasure to read. The action and suspense are fantastic. I can hardly wait to read the Vektor book. Every one of Konkoly's books are great reads. I highly recommend them to anyone liking action books. You will not be disappointed.
I enjoyed the plot and most of the characters in this series. I felt most of the descriptive passages were too "wordy," exceedingly long and drawn out. Sometimes it was difficult to keep up with the characters (who they were, what branch of service). If you're going to use so many anagrams then occasional refreshers of what they stand for is needed.
Absolutely fascinating reads! I am a new fan of Konkoly and can't imagine anyone that likes action, intrigue, mystery and a little romance not enjoying this author. Of course you need to be aware this is not for the person with the inability to realize this is a military action and not a tea party.
Konkoly has crafted a rich story packed with action and solid characters. While robust enough for this genre, the plot is a bit transparent, and didn't offer any memorable surprises.
I want More of the Black Flagged Books! Mr. Konkoly has a winner here can't put the book down! Please continue the series. Great Characters, plot development, he's got it all
This is just great reading! Konkoly brings in political crap to muddy the waters and make the ongoing problems of the Black Flag group even more dynamic. I do like the way he's incorporated the payback of Russia into the storyline as well.
I read these books as a package and was glad I didn't have to wait to move on to the next book! The author doesn't disappoint and the reader is in for a wild ride!
Highly recommend this series, all the books are great. After reading the first book I couldn't wait to read the next one and getting the next 3 books at a reduced price was a no brainer. Highly recommend this book as well as each book individually.
Just finished the series and liked most of it. Captivating story, a little long on the descriptions of the guns and operations, but well thought out. Drinking well Agee now!
