Murder Unearthed: an Inspector Constable murder mystery

Rate this book
What could spoil the fun of a free holiday on the Spanish Costa? For Detective Inspector Andy Constable and his colleague Sergeant Dave Copper, only one thing - the murder of Spanish builder Juan Manuel Laborero.
But why should the death of one manual labourer on a building site make Constable and Copper's free holiday far from carefree? Demolishing the local British community's wall of silence, our detectives soon unearth a whole structure of deceit and corruption. Whose story is without foundation? Who has constructed a false alibi? Has someone gone plumb loco, or did one of the suspects put the final nail in the coffin? Sparks fly as the truth emerges!
'Murder Unearthed' was originally published in paperback in 2012 under the title 'Juan Foot In The Grave'. Critics wrote 'A very enjoyable, well-written, British novel with huge dollops of humour and wit' - ' The author pulled me in and I kept reading it' - 'Very clever and thoroughly entertaining'.

Roger Keevil was born and educated in Southampton, U.K. Having moved to Spain in 2006, he devised and began to write a series of light-hearted short stories featuring his detectives, Inspector Andy Constable and Sergeant Dave Copper, eventually deciding to develop one of his stories into his first full-length novel, 'Feted to Die' (later re-titled 'Murderer's Fete'). Returning to the U.K. in 2009, he published the second Inspector Constable mystery, 'Juan Foot In The Grave' (later re-titled 'Murder Unearthed') in 2012, and in 2013 he launched Inspector Constable's third investigation - 'Death Sails In The Sunset' - set aboard a cruise ship. He published the fourth book, three short stories under the title 'Murder Comes To Call', in 2014 and followed this in 2015 with three further short stories in 'Murder Most Frequent'. The sixth Inspector Constable novel, a full-length investigation entitled 'The Odds On Murder', appeared in January 2016, followed by 'The Murder Cabinet' in January 2017. The next novel, 'The Game Of Murder', launched in January 2018, and then came 'No Bar To Murder', published in January 2019.

In October 2019 Roger published 'Honeymooner's Murder', the first in a new series of novels - The Copper & Co Murder Mysteries - following the further cases of some of the favourite characters from the Inspector Constable stories. The second novel, 'Murder at Witch's Holt', appeared in May 2020.

Roger was delighted to be invited by the BBC to be part of the panel of sleuths on their exciting new whodunnit game show 'Armchair Detectives' in 2017. Funny and brilliant

From the moment you first open the book the humour begins. Often subtle, sometimes wincing, off times laugh out loud funny. Set in sunny Spain, Copper and Constable have arrived for a week long holiday won in a raffle. Their first day begins with a body and a rapid solution to the problem brought before them by the local police chief. The second body takes a bit longer but finally a satisfactory solution is found, though it must be said that many of those who knew the dead man probably wish they didn't. The first book in the series that I have read. I have just purchased a number of others and will be reading them as well. An author well worth reading, and one whose sense of humour is too often lacking in the writers of today but us a throwback to the writers of times past when a good book really was a good book for more than one reason.

If I could give minus stars I would as this was very disappointing. The attempts at humor get in the way of what I felt was a mediocre mystery. I had to force myself to finish this (because I can't just begin a book and not finish it) even though it was really a waste of time. I didn't care who the murderer was or why the victim was murdered. I doubt I'll read any more of the series.

Gentle read

Nice one, the names not only amusing but helpful, I am constantly forgetting who is who. Not with this, will try again with this Author.

I love these books. They really make me giggle. I love the play on names and the fact that no-one even mentions them. Good fun reading.
