On October 3, 1993, the assault was initiated in the most dangerous part of Mogadishu, Somalia and within 20 minutes seemed to be under control for the assaulting Delta Force. Unfortunately, things changed very quickly and the men of Task Force RANGER would become involved in the most intense combat for American troops since the Vietnam War. This book addresses not only this situation commonly referred to as the Battle of the Black Sea or Black Hawk Down, but also the untold stories of that military engagement, the real events of Task Force RANGER combat operations from leadership to the negative impacts of political correctness on military decisions. Specifically, illustrating the dire consequences resulting when military leaders base their decisions on political and popularity concerns over the success of the mission. The discussion of leadership and critical decision-making in the streets of Mogadishu involved all levels of military service, and provides the reader with a better understanding of the privilege associated with leading our brave American soldiers.Colonel McKnight brings his experience to others through his presentation that provides a better understanding of the unparalleled commitment, and leadership required to be successful when executing operations in the most difficult and severe combat situations. Streets of Mogadishu is the epitome of the best and worst of times for soldiers in combat. The numerous and unsurpassed acts of courage, bravery and heroism during those extraordinary hours on the 3rd and 4th of October 1993 will never be forgotten, nor the leadership, commitment, and dedication shown by those in Task Force RANGER. And most of all, let their actions always be a reminder of the sacrifice necessary to protect our liberties and freedoms and the special way of life of our great nation.
COL McKnight is an absolute American treasure. I can tell he is the type of leader the military needs right now, too bad he’s retired. He hits the nail on the head when he mentioned that politically correctness will be the downfall of our nation and he is 100% correct. His leadership style and writing style make my heart so happy. I absolutely loved every word of this book and the lessons taught can not compare to anything else you will read about leadership. Amazing. Simply brilliant.
An excellent insight into political influence and how if affects military operations ultimately costing lives. This is an invaluable view from the ground from a man with a lot of miles on his boots. He has earned our respect, and his book is a memorial to the men who died for their country on the Streets of Mogadishu.
Great quick read about combat operations in 1993 in Somalia. Very interesting from COL McKnight's perspective on both military and political decision making.
★ - Most books with this rating I never finish and so don't make this list. This one I probably started speed-reading to get it over with. ★★ - Average. Wasn't terrible, but not a lot to recommend it. Probably skimmed parts of it. ★★★ - Decent. A few good ideas, well-written passages, interesting characters, or the like. ★★★★ - Good. This one had parts that inspired me, impressed me, made me laugh out loud, made me think - it got positive reactions and most of the rest of it was pretty decent too. ★★★★★ - Amazing. This is the best I've read of its genre, the ones I hold on to so I can re-read them and/or loan them out to people looking for a great book. The best of these change the way I look at the world and operate within it.
As a Vietnam veteran, I really appreciate this book. You can tell that he wrote this book to keep a promise to himself to honor those who served and died during the "Blackhawk Down" incident. This is what every good soldier does. He/she protects and honors the people they serve with no matter what the larger wartime issue may be. His analysis of good leadership was spot on and his opinion of the Clinton and Obama administration was totally accurate.
