I figured I'd wait until I read the entire series to give a review.

Mayu Shinjo definitely has a style - forceful guys, bishonen after bishonen (literally, "Beautiful man") showing up to compete for the hapless heroine's hand, and, recently, a lot of moe guys ("moe" meaning "inspiring a feeling of adoration / devotion" - slang usually used to describe cutesy, helpless characters with super huge eyes and childish tendencies).

"Demon Love Spell" uses the same tropes - if you're not a fan of any of the above, I'd skip this title.

If you are - take a look! The series starts off strong (Volumes 1 and 2 are probably the best), but as the series goes on, it goes more into the improbable and the, "Crap; this needs to run longer than I originally intended, I gotta come up with something" territories. The last volume is a jumbled mess leading into a happy ending, but you know, for the genre / author, I don't expect a manga masterpiece. It's a bit of fluff with ridiculous sexual tension, guys that moan from the touch of a hand, and pledging devotion to a girl within a week of meeting her - and it's totally a guilty pleasure, like all of Shinjo's works have been for me. Is it the strongest of her works? Not really, but it's more fun than "Ai, Ore!" and briefer than "Sensual Phrase" (which I think is out of print now?)

Speaking of, it does make me want to track down "Sensual Phrase." It seems like in the early 2000s, Viz started taking more of a risk with their shoujo manga, and started translating more work that was way more sexual than what was previously on the market. "Sensual Phrase" is the title that stands out to me as being one of the most blatant - and it seems like it did well enough to keep bringing Shinjo's work over.

To be honest, the last 2 volumes frustrated me, mostly because of the lead girl, Miko. She pretty much annoyed me. She caused much more drama for no reason at all. I only wanted the series to end at that point. The 1st 4 vols were "better". Quite enjoyable. The only good part about the whole series was the comedy (some scenes made me laugh out loud) and some of the supporting characters. *sobs over Miyuki* The chapters with Miyuki and Momota were the most memorable to me, and probably the one with Mr Tree as well. Also we never got to know more about Momota afterwards. I was curious if he'd visit them back, especially at the end. I wished we'd get to see some character development from the lead couple, but that didn't really happen. The bad part about the series is that it has some... uncomfortable themes here and there. Not a fan of those. Overall, an alright series.

I really enjoyed this series. It was the right combination of comedy, romance, and action. Maybe a few too many instances of “just trust me on this”. That’s fine for things like your partner getting a random text in the middle of the night and them telling you it’s from work and you needing nothing further. But if my husband comes walking through the door covered in blood and dirt and carrying a shovel and he’s giving me an indignant “if you really loved me, you wouldn’t ask me about this”, I’m sorry, but no. There’s trust and then there’s stupidity.

Anyway, aside from that, it’s a good series. A little disjointed, I will say, but that’s intentional apparently—the author wrote this more as a series of short stories so that she could end it at any point. And I think she ended it at the right time.

Certo, siamo a livelli superiori rispetto a Love celeb, Sex=Love² o Virgin crisis.

Sadly rushed ending

I really wish they had taken there time. It feels so rushed that it's almost cliff notes. The author teases you on the series with the idea that Miko won't do anything unless forced either by desperation or some sort of transactional situation. It feels like a cheater method to use the "I'm dying" route over and over then actual use it. If that weren't enough, it follows with a 2 page mini conclusion that is years later with them having a toddler. So lazy! 😐 I feel let down.

It's always when Kagura nearly fades away that Miko makes some small step forward. This time they really are facing the end and not Kagura over exaggerating to get something from his girlfriend. Even both of their fathers seem to give in and accept there's nothing they can do when it comes to this odd pair. Funny how that doesn't seem to stop Miko's father from fawning over young Kamui in the end.

I absolutely loved the series, I read it all in a day and when I finished I felt like I should re-read it again straight away. Greatly recommend it to everyone. The manga had moments where it just touched my heart ever so gently, moments where I was close to crying and easy moments full of joy. I read countless mangas, and I am proud to say this is my favourite.

Cute ending to the series. I like that it actually had a good end and that it was a pretty short series.
The stories in this volume were good and I definitely enjoyed this volume as much as the rest of the series.
Over the course of the series there was good character growth, a good main story arc, and good sub-plots. Cute series.

Rating this series as a whole but V6 was the weakest of the series HOWEVER they way Demon Love Spell had me laughing in almost every volume, safe to say I loved this series and IF you can find V6 out in the world I suggest this series, it is out of print and def hard to come by, the ending was cute and okay but nothing special.

An entertaining and surprisingly adorable tale of a spiritualy "blind" miko and the Incubus who falls in love with her (and her parents who are surpisingly okay with him being around, just as long as his powers are sealed and he is in his "tiny" form).

I wasn't expecting to finish this the literal moment I picked it up, but that's entirely what happened.
This entire volume is an emotional roller coaster and a bit confusing, but I loved every second of it.
The best part is that it feels like a decent ending.

There was a big time skip at the end which was really jarring for me. I’ll prolly get rid of this serious. It was good but not memorable. I recommend trying this out before you buy.

Such a cute ending for the whole series!
If you love demon lore and romance, consider giving Demon Love Spell a read. It's a short tease but sweet series.

I finally finished it! Still sucks I can't own this copy solely due to the price it's at by this point (over 100 for one volume no thank you [aka maybe when I'm made of money T^T])

What defines a "guilty pleasure?" Self-indulgence. That's this manga. I devoured the entire series in one day, and it has all the works: pretty art, hot demon guys, "Will They, Won't They" shenanigans, Melodrama, shrine priestess/demonic power playoffs, and fanservice that is simultaneously "vanilla" and "steamy" for what it is. It is completely shameless shoujo manga trash and I'm LIVING FOR IT.

Is the romance cliched? Absolutely. Are the characters complex or fascinating? Absolutely NOT. This is pure, unadulterated romantic fanservice for girls and women, and nothing more or less. There's no one coherent story, more like a series of vignettes featuring our hapless heroine, Miko (who happens to be a miko/priestess... I see what you did there, Japan) and her constantly horny incubus boyfriend, Kagura. No main villain or conflict, unless you count troublemaking demons, and no real plot point except "when will they FINALLY have sex?!" Yeah. It's pretty ridiculous, but also a fun ride.

This manga is basically Black Bird done right, in terms of portraying a hot demon guy who's kinda pushy with his affections. Black Bird overdid it, with having the love interest, Kyo, be downright rapey towards his lady love. Like, good gods, the amount of times poor Misao literally cries and is TERRIFIED during "sexy times" was genuinely disturbing. Whereas, in Demon Love Spell, Kagura is literally an incubus, and literally lives off the love and passion of women, and yet holds back in extraordinary levels, and Miko quite obviously enjoys every moment of it, and only resists because of her duties as a shrine priestess. This manga only has one "problematic" scene in the last volume, but it barely lasts a few panels, so I barely count it. (Besides, that's like, what? One half mark in Demon Love Spell vs countless marks in Black Bird? Hmmm.)

If you're a sucker for shoujo romantic nonsense, with demons and priestess powers, and relatively tame action scenes (both for defeating demons and for steamy love scenes), then give Demon Love Spell a try. It might give you a good laugh or some level of fluffy entertainment, it might not. But if you can't stand any of the tropes I mentioned, then it's probably best to steer clear. It definitely has its particular audience, and I'm just a shameless member of that group.

Yup, I finally finished this story. I mean the last 2 volumes have been lying on my bedside table since the end of October. And I finally read them after my midterms were finished. Yes, it’s the end of November while I’m writing the review. Let me start from the beginning. There are only 6 volumes, 18 chapters, however, right now there are only 14 chapters uploaded on mangafox and mangahere. But do not be discouraged as Viz media has taken it under its “wing” so if you need you can get all volumes. That’s what I did, though I only bought last 3. But let me end this boring talk and start talking about the story itself.

If you’ve been reading my blog you know that Mayu Shinjo is one of my favourite authors and I have already covered quite a lot of her works that are on my favourite list. Mostly I love her adult works, and though this one is a not in such a daring form, it still is in the adult section, or I could say in the entrance to the adult section. The story is about a young priestess who by a chance banishes the real demon, and he to take his revenge stays next to her to eat her up. Yup, this is your demon x priestess romance. But trust me it’s fun, with lots of action and you wouldn’t want to put it down. I remember I was sulking for a year to get new updates until I finally ordered the last volumes.

Miko and Kagura are awesome characters. Especially Kagura, he reminded me of Sakuya from Sensual Phrase, and in one of the chapters he really is compared to Sakuya. But we are not talking about Sakuya here; let me get beck to Kagura. He’s the demon in the flesh and that’s his incredible charm. He’s hot, I remember my friend who has no idea about manga was drooling when she saw me reading. You can never get bored with him and with mini Kagura. And the real fun is in the last 2 volumes, as the relationship between Miko and Kagura finally reach that point. Are you sure you want to miss this fun ride? Well, this story is all yours! And you’ll love how it all ends!

Enjoy it to its fullest and don’t forget to share your thoughts below! Stay tuned for more reviews as well as promos. Don’t miss your next favourite book or manga! Happy reading!

XOXO

My review for the whole serie:

The art of the manga is really pretty. It's a pleasure to see the banter between Miko and Kagura. And chibi-Kagura is really adorable. It has funny moments as well as actions fighting demons. I like that Kagura needs to touch girls to survive. I really like the characters and the storyline.

I find the last volume confusing though, especially the end, I find it rushed and a 7th volume would have been welcome. I was expecting a wedding with Kagura's demon family on one side, and Miko's exorcist family on the other, and I think the tension between both groups would have been funny to show. But instead after Miko and Kagura get back together, I was sure her father had put Kagura in his chibi form again. I had to reread that part a few times to realize it was not Kagura's chibi form, but Kagura's and Miko's son. It does not say if they got married after all, it also does not say if their child is a human or a demon either.

The sakura tree story was sweet, but I was wondering why all the build up for this "side story" when the series was ending. Of course, in the "real world" of manga, there isn't much heads up, so perhaps the mangaka only found out after this had gone through, or it was simply something she still wanted to tell. The ending was okay. Wish their could have been more. It was set up where it certainly could have gone out with the investigations, but alas. Nice series! Goodbye, bishonen! Adieu, Tiny Kagura!

I'm not entirely sure why, but the end of the Cherry Blossom arc made me cry (maybe it's hormones).

The last arc was romantic and sexy although a bit too much misunderstanding for my taste. And the part about the priestess's blood seemed to come out of left field. But the part about Kagura's father was a pretty good twist I didn't see coming. it was a really cute series overall and I loved the humor.

I really wish the series didn't end but i truly loved the ending to this, i can't believe they had a kid and when Kagura was dying i was so shocked and i genuinely thought he was going to die. I wish there was more to this manga series but over all i love it, i got these for Christmas and it was so awkward when i opened them but i absolutely adored this entire series and the love between Kagura and Miko.
