I have read all three of the Maggie Devereux books and this review is truly about all of them together. First, the ideas of this set are pretty cool. Just enough real history to grab you so he could expound into the magic. A positive there. I was very disappointed with the budding romance between Maggie and her beau. It was written awkwardly and never really grabbed me that they had feelings for one another. I've been to Scotland and Penner did a decent job of capturing its appeal. Not exceptional, but decent. The author definitely did his research and seemed to have a good grasp on the story, I just feel he could have wrung more emotion from the tale, and that's where this book falls short. It was a readable tale but really didn't grab the reader by the heart strings and make you care. Not a bad set of books to pass the time, but it was a bit shallow when it could have been deeper.
I kept reading, hoping that the story would develop into something more than it turned out to be. The epic finale was like something one would see in a B grade movie. Zzzzzzzzz.
