Dethroning Crown

Rate this book
Number ten is plastered on his team jersey and on his ego. In his own mind, Crown Sterling is the shit. He dates the prettiest women, he dominates on the soccer field, he pours money out of his pockets like it’s water. Until a debilitating knee injury puts him out of commission on and off the field. He’s sent to an isolated town in Louisiana to recoup, undergo physical therapy and heal. But it’s when you’re down that you find out who your real friends are, and what they value in you, if anything at all.

All Lyra wants out of life is peace and quiet. She grew up with a regular, everyday family. When she turned sixteen, rummaging through her grandmother’s hope chest in the attic, she discovered a secret that would turn her simple, normal life into a ball of chaos that revolved around her. But while she seems to face her fears head on in her career, she lives a life that’s secure and well hidden.

A new neighbor moved in next door and he’s decided that everyone needs to listen to his rap music, shattering Lyra’s quiet existence. Enraged, she stomps to the next townhouse over and who should open the door but a man whose good looks and charming smile knock her breathless.

How good looking? Just ask him.

How charming? He’ll tell you that too.

The king must be dethroned.

And a small town girl who’s been through hell is just the one to do it.

Lila Felix is full of antics and stories. She refused to go to Kindergarten after the teacher made her take a nap on the first day of school. She staged her first protest in middle school. She almost flunked out of her first semester at Pepperdine University because she was enthralled with their library and frequently was locked in. Now her husband and three children have to put up with her rebel nature in Louisiana where her days are filled with cypress trees, crawfish, and of course her books and writing. She writes about the ordinary people who fall extraordinarily in wild, true love.

Crown Sterling is a soccer player who has as much ego as talent. Unfortunately an injury puts him out of the game until he recuperates. So he goes living near his family, to one of his uncle houses. And then he meets his neighbor, Lyra and she’s as beautiful as she is troubled. Crown never worried with anyone expect himself, but he finds soon that he also worries about Lyra.
And as they get to know each other they see that people aren’t always what they show, and there’s always more to a person. But when they start to find more about the other and feelings starts growing, how long will it take for the masks to fall?

I know I’m probably the minority here, but, well, that’s too bad. I fell for this book when I first saw the cover. Then I’ve read the blurb and I’m all about love and second chances. And if there’s an athlete in the mix I’m completely sold. I probably had to high expectations for this book and part of it it’s my fault, but imagine my disappointment when about 40% of the book I was so bored I just wanted to stop reading. I didn’t do it because I really hate not to finish books, and to be fair, near the end it gets better. But not better enough to compensate for the all the rest. For a romance story it lacked romance, it lacked steam, it lacked drama.
In all this, the good things were the writing, which is solid and flawless, the amazing cover and the plot, that unfortunately wasn’t delivered. I know that is going to be a companion novel to this one, but I’m seriously debating If I want to read him.
If you're are curious about this, give it a try. It's never enough to say that just because it didn't work for me,it doesn't meant it won't work for others ;)

Characters Development: I believe this was a first time for me. Normally I love the heroes, even when sometimes I want to beat them. In this book the hero did absolutely NOTHING for me. I didn’t care for him one bit. And if he wasn’t for the talking in 3th person (Crown Sterling is this. Crown Sterling is that.), I probably even wouldn’t remember him in the end. Despite being self-absorbed, he was nothing else. Seriously, no personality at all. Lyra was… meh. She had some lady balls, which was good for her, but not even her past made me like her more. And their connection, you ask? Well… what connection?
Steam: Nope.

I could’ve held her like that all night. This whole thing was completely foreign to me. It was like I was in a different world and I’d become a different person around her.
I wasn’t sure if I liked him or not.
He certainly wasn’t the Crown Sterling I knew.
Not that Crown Sterling was much to know.

***

When an accident on the soccer field lands Crown Sterling in the hospital, he has nowhere left to go but under the care of his uncle in Louisiana. No longer the King of the field, Crown must learn to fend for himself. While he is there recuperating, he meets the stunning, yet mysterious, Lyra. In a few weeks’ time, Lyra shakes up his world and his heart. But will it be enough to change this egotistical jerk into someone that considers other people before himself for once? Or when given the all clear will he take off running back to his old life and old ways?

To say that Crown Sterling is a jerk is putting it mildly. Never before has Felix written a guy to this degree. But in a way, you still want to love him. You still know that there is something better hiding under all those layers. It is just the peeling away process you have to endure before you get down deep into Crown's true self. I liked what was found as Lyra stripped away his defenses.

Lyra is one of those precious characters that I was immediately fond of. The chick names her dresses for heaven's sake. But it is what she has been through and still dealing with that had me wanting to comfort her. I absolutely love that Felix will take something that a lot of people don't think about and make it a real thing in her books. You actually feel as if she has gone through the hurt and pain that she has her characters experiencing. It is that real.

DETHRONING CROWN is one of those books that I have been waiting a long time for. And I will tell you this...it was so worth the wait. I was given bits and pieces of the book over a lengthy amount of time and it was pure torture waiting to see where Felix was going to take certain scenes. To hear her talk about going a different direction had me pins and needles. But again…so worth the wait.

Once again, 5 Swoon Worthy Stars.

Having read and a fan of Lila Felix, I did not hesitate to have a chance to receive an ARC. So while I am a fan my review is given in return for receiving an ARC.

This book is a different story line for Lila Felix. Can she write stories that have a secondary or third jerks/@$$holes? Yes. Can she write them as her would be hero? Yep, turns out she can! Crown Sterling is a jerk with @$$hole tendencies. Crown is a guy who has the world at his finger tips and can have anything a the snap of his fingers, because he is a prince of the professional soccer world. An injury that takes him out of the game brings a heavy pile of revelations for Crown that open his eyes. He realizes the life he thinks he has isn't real and isn't the real way to live. But, Crown doesn't get to this realization by himself. Oh no, here is where Lyra (gah, love that name!) becomes the heroine for our hero and not just the story.

Lyra is a beautiful girl that has a soul and heart to match. Lyra is a character that is a complement to Crown, as she is his opposite. Lyra life has been touched by evil, the kind that will never wash away. But, while it is a daily struggle and Lyra is working to get out to a place she feels safe, she hasn't lost her kindness, her love of people in her life and her hope. She doesn't want people to pity her for the evil she has endured, she wants to be loved, accepted and safe just as anyone would want.

Lyra and Crown are good for each other and then lessons they each each other bring them to a place that both can be where they want and need to be. Lila has written another awesome story and I can't wait for the reading world to get their hands on it!

4.5 stars. I love author Lila Felix and I loved this book. Her books have unique story lines and unique characters. While usually a typical romance type book with an HEA, she never has any of the "cookie cutter" type plots and action.

Crown Sterling is a famous soccer player groomed from birth by his father to become a star. He is conceited, full of himself, obnoxious and living beyond his means. Then his knee is torn to shreds in a game and he is forced to retreat to the bayous of Louisiana where his uncle lives to try and rehab himself back into the God he knows he is.

Back in Louisiana, Crown's next door apartment neighbor is Lyra, a beautiful girl who lives a strange, quirky life and doesn't seem at all phased by Crown's superior beingness. Seems Lyra has her own tragic secrets.

Lyra and Crown form a tentative friendship based mostly on Crown's need just to have some help in navigating his new world, and Lyra's seemingly being afraid of everything around her except Crown. They help each other in profound ways but is it enough for each of them to admit they need each other? Just a wonderful, standalone book that I added to my favorites.

I was lucky enough to win a ARC from Lila Felix a couple of days ago. After I received it, I took myself off to my room and read the whole thing in one sitting! I think it took a couple of hours, I couldn't put it down.

At the beginning of this book I had an instant dislike towards Crown, I thought he was an Asshat; an arrogant Asshat and I didn't like him at all! In fact I dreaded having to read his side of things for awhile there!

Then we meet Lyra and slowly but surely she starts to make it easier to actually like Crown, she makes us see him through her eyes and you find yourself rooting for the both of them.

I really enjoyed this.

This story didn't have much sex in it, but the character development really made up for it.

At the start, you could just strangle Crown and his arrogant attitude, but through the
course of the story you can't really blame him for how he is as that is how he was raised.

I think Lyra was a good foil for Crown. She didn't put up with his crap.

Because of their slow development of their relationship it was believable.

By the end of the book, I actually felt really bad for Crown.

There is supposed to be a novella coming in February 2015 which I will read.

I would recommend this book for a change of pace from the usual romance.

4.5/5.0

This book may not be a 5 star for everyone and I totally see that but for me, it was just what I needed when I needed it - a fun, upbeat and entertaining diversion that was well written and enjoyable. I was
just a titch let down at the end because I never could figure why Lyra acted as she did in the hotel and feel Crown needed more of a definitive declaration. Otherwise, this was absolutely delightful! The characters were written so realistically and stayed consistent to their natures. Crowns growth was especially well done, little by little as he discovers himself. It is a definite one sitting, sigh at the end kind of read.

Dethroning Crown is an Emotional lol funny swoon worthy romance that leaves U wanting more! I Fell hard for Lyra & Crown their snarky banter and sizzlin' chemistry was delicious!!!

I loved seeing how Lyra's love and sass stripped away Crown's mask and changed him from an intitled jerk to a sweet caring man that would do anything to win her heart!

One of my fave funny quotes
“Crown made my belly flutter even when I begged it to stop. Until he opened his mouth.
When Crown opened his mouth, I wanted to bust him over the head with a lasagna pan.”

Lila Felix Totally Rocks 5 Smokin' Hot Stars!!!

I loved the storyline for this book but something about the execution didn’t work for me. It was ok, but could have been so much better. I did like the characters, and how it didn’t have the insta-love vibe but everything else about this book was beyond ridiculous and unrealistic. It was just a bit too cliché for my preference.

I loved this book. ( as I love all lila books) this story was different in that I wasn't in love with Crown right away. I loved seeing both main characters progress and develop into better people. I thought that Crown was realistic to real men in a way. I loved this book!

Having never read a book from this author, I really had no expectations. Either I was going to like the book or I wasn't. It turns out that I loved it and I loved it because of the two main characters, Crown and Lyra.

In the beginning of the book, Crown, who is a professional soccer player, is not very likeable. His ego is so inflated that he refers to himself in the third person like royalty. I think he even refers to himself as a king at one point.

Then there's Lyra, a young woman who because of the actions of a teacher who should have been trusted, exhibits signs of OCD, a bit of paranoia and a fear of being watched/filmed/photographed. She's a model who prefers not to show her face in the photos she poses in. Yet, unlike Crown, albeit to a small number of people only, she's able to still give a little bit of herself, her caring and her kindness.

What makes this book five stars for me is really the because of the transformation of both characters. First, there's Crown. Here's a man, who from the time he was a kid, was railroaded into eating, sleeping, drinking soccer by his father. While it seems that it's only because his father was driven because he himself wasn't able to become a professional soccer player, there's also an implication that perhaps it was his way of dealing with the grief of his wife's death while Crown was just a child.

His father shut love out of his life when his wife died and in a way, taught Crown to do the same thing. When you shut love from others, it then becomes about just loving yourself, taking care of only your needs and only giving if you get something in return. Loving only yourself leaves no room for loving others and what happens is that you end up alone. Alone is what Crown is when he goes to Louisiana to recuperate and rehabilitate after he injures his knee.

When Crown and Lyra first meet, suffice to say that it doesn't go well. However, Lyra's compassion starts to make its way into Crown's life, not that he really wanted to acknowledge it. Instead, he comes up with a plan to ask Lyra if she'd consider posing as his girlfriend as a way for him to stay in the spotlight.

She says yes for reasons of her own, but in spending time with Lyra, Crown starts to realize how selfish he has been in comparison to Lyra's generosity of spirit. It isn't until something happens at Lyra's home that he starts to understand about giving back. By Lyra needing his strength, it made him want to be whatever she needed most. One line that I found poignant came from Crown when he said that "I didn't know that I heart before you."

Lyra also starts to change. Due to her extremely traumatizing experience with the teacher, she has difficulty trusting men in general, but more specifically in a romantic fashion. What I liked regarding this plot point is that while there were hints of what happened regarding the teacher, it didn't really come out until Lyra told Crown the whole story.

By Lyra helping Crown to open his heart and to not live just a "partial life", she was also learning to open up her own heart and also to trust again. That trust was first shown when after a freakout, she allowed Crown to be there for her. But it wasn't until telling Crown that the teacher she trusted had wired her bedroom and bathroom with cameras for years to watch her, that she really put her trust in his hands.

Unfortunately, as Crown's injury healed and it was time for him to go back, who he was then and who he is now started battling with each other. Even though Lyra tells him that she loves him, Crown is unable to accept or acknowledge that he feels the same way. Soccer is the only life he's ever known and because of that he feels like has no other choice. So instead of staying and loving Lyra, he goes back to his "partial life" but not without extracting a promise for Lyra to come and see his first game.

It's what happens at that game that Crown finally realizes that he wants more and that his only true happiness lies with Lyra and in true HEA fashion, he goes and gets her.

Dethroning Crown is another awe-inspiring book written by the one and only Lila Felix!!! I have read most of Lila's books, and there hasn't been one that I haven't loved. Each book that she creates becomes better and better. Dethroning Crown was a little different from Lila's usual books. She always writes the sweet, loving guys that we can't help but fall in love with. Well, let me tell you something about Crown Sterling. Crown Sterling is an arrogant jerk. A jerk who I eventually fell in love with, and that is one of the things that I loved about this book. Crown completely changed by the end of the story. The character development was spot on!!!! I also love how we get to read the story from both Crown and Lyra's point of view.

Lyra has suffered so much throughout her life. After what that creep did to her, she hasn't let anyone in her life period. She pretty much swore off guys and who could blame her. Lyra suffers paranoia big time now. She basically has OCD with anything electronic so she has to check it several times over and over before she feels safe and secure. Being outside, is more comfortable to Lyra than being inside. Silence. That is one important thing she has to have. So when her next door neighbor has his music blaring, she rushes over there and lets him have it!!! What I love about Lyra is that she doesn't want to like him, but does. She sees the good in him. The person that he can be if given the chance, and I really adored her because of that. I loved watching her feelings grow and change for Crown. She slowly let him in when she wouldn't anyone else.

Crown always thought he was the big kahuna. Nobody mattered but him. He honestly treated people like crap, and I didn't like him at first. It really wasn't his fault though so I can't really blame him. That was the way he was raised. The only way he knew how to be. After injuring his knee in a game, Crown is whisked away to Louisiana to be under the care of his uncle who he has no relationship with. After Lyra tells him off one day, they can't get enough of each other. They make a deal that helps both their careers out only it seems to bring them closer. Being around Lila, he finally got to see how empty his life was, realizing he had nobody. That everyone he thought liked him, didn't in fact like him. Crown Sterling changed because of Lila. It was so heartwarming to be able to see and feel that. Boy, he got so jealous and possessive of her!!! Crown Sterling quit talking like this after Lyra made fun of him for it. Crown Sterling finally found something more important than himself and soccer.

Lila crafted a unique story that had me me from the very beginning and never let me go!!! Dethroning Crown was a fun, fast-paced story that definitely left me wanting more!!! I am hoping against all hope here that Lila writes a sequel. Crown Sterling is so awesome he needs another book!!! I want to find out what happens next!!! The ending was left open a little to me. Crown still has a lot of changing to do, and I was wondering if anything became of Lyra's stalker after he got out. I have been waiting impatiently to read Dethroning Crown for a while now, and it was well worth the wait!!! This book is a MUST read everyone!!! I already want to reread it!!! I highly recommend it!!!

I'm shocking myself by saying this, but I think (for the first time ever, I have a favorite Lila book!) I love them ALL and I can never, ever pick a favorite, but......I can't believe I was finally able to say yep it's this one!! There was just SO much to love (and hate) about this book. Hate?? Yes I HATED Crown when I first met him. So cocky, spoiled, rude and a down right A hole! Crown treated people and money like Kleenex, easy to come by and dispose of, made me sick. The moment he hurt his knee I thought, oh yeah, paybacks buddy!! I didn't feel one bit sorry for him and thought he deserved every moment of his misery and pain.

Now Crown is trapped in a self loathing prison lashing out at everyone, until one day a cute spunky neighbor moves in next door....... *giggle* Due some family issues ( you'll have to read) Lyra just wants to keep to herself and move ahead in her life and job. Lyra is loving her new place until her neighbor decides to disrupt her peaceful atmosphere. Not one to put up with any one's crap, Lyra heads next door to give her new neighbor a piece of her mind. Helloooo sexy! Is she ever surprised when Crown answers the door, this is one of my favorite parts, btw!!!

What comes next is one of the most tumultuous love hate relationships Lila has ever written. Beyond all my gasps and giggles, I think what I enjoyed most about this book, was the amount of change Crown was able to achieve in this story. It was truly awe inspiring. He went from being a character I despised to one I adored by the end. It wasn't for Lyra or even because of her. I think Crown changed because HE wanted to become a better person.

Let's not over look the wonderfulness of Lyra, she's so strong and tries to hide her painful secrets. Through her relationship with Crown, she learns that love is worth the risks.

So how did all this come together? You'll have to read "Dethroning Crown" to find out! You DON'T want to miss this book!!!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Crown Sterling cares about three things in this world; Crown Sterling, Soccer, and Crown Sterling. He lives for the game and it’s very good at it. If you don’t believe me, just ask him. He’ll be happy to tell you all about Crown Sterling.

“That’s right, ladies and gents, I’m a god in this arena. Shout my name, clap and gasp when I make a brilliant move. Fuel me with your worship.”

When an injury lands him out of his element, down and out in a small town, he has to adjust to being on the road to recovery and face that maybe soccer isn’t the only important thing in life.

“These Louisiana people probably hosed off in the yard.”

Lyra is the sweet girl next door with a dark past. She’s worked hard to make a life of quiet solitude that’s interrupted when a boisterous ego maniac move in next door. I’ll give you three guesses who that might be, and the first two don’t count.

“Crown Sterling was an ass - and he smelled like one too.”

The first three-quarters of the story was a savoring slow ride up to the top of the roller coaster, you can see quite clearly that the drop is right ahead. You’re not sure what’s going to cause it but you know it’s coming!

After that is actually the part I liked the least. Given the backstory I was expecting either for things to get pretty dark, be filled with a bit more drama, or run its course a little longer. It just felt a bit rushed to me. I mean, don’t get me wrong the ending was satisfying, in a wow that cake was great but the icing could have been better. And really that’s the only thing keeping this from hitting 5 stars.

Crown is an arrogant, self entitled jerk who has been catered to most of his life. An incredible athlete until one fateful game takes it away. Now he's sent to the swamps of Louisiana to stay at an estranged uncle's home to recover. No friends, No visitors, and visions dancing through his head of if he'll ever be able to play again is enough to weigh anyone down. He is drowning at the moment until a ballsy spitfire appears before him. Lyra just may be the one to save Crown.

These two have somehow ended up neighbors and Lyra is not too happy with the obnoxious and rude guy next door.

Lyra a part time model with a heart gold who seeks solitude as much as she can and has a pension for restoring old things and bringing them to life again. Lyra has a painful past and things are getting a bit strained for her but she is also torn between her growing feelings for Crown.

Crown wants more than anything to be back in spotlight again and feels there is no hope in changing him but can't help caring deeply for Lyra.
Lyra craves her quiet & calm life but she also yearns to have Crown realize he is more than what he does, that there is a wonderful and sweet man that lies underneath.

Can these two even become friends? Will Lyra & Crown ever give in to their feelings? Do you think Crown will ever open his eyes and see what really matters in life? Find out Today & Snatch up your copy ASAP!!!

Dethroning Crown had been teased for awhile now and I've been itching to get my hands on it. And let me tell you, I was not disappointed when I was lucky enough to receive an ARC for review.

Crown Sterling is an egotistical, arrogant, self centered butt that doesn't know any better. Many times I wanted to yell at home and smack him upside the head to knock some sense into him. He thinks he is king of the world and doesn't have to do anything or be nice to anybody. It's just not in his standards of life.

Lyra is the sweetest woman. She is confident with herself but has some quirks that hurts my heart. She makes you work for her love and friendship but that makes me love her even more.

Lyra and Crown are the king and queen for each other but they have hard work and valuable lessons to get to their own thrones.

Lila has written amazing characters that you hate to love and you just can't help it. With each book of hers that I read she gets better and better. So yes pull up a comfy throne and fall in love with Crown and Lyra.

AWESOME BOOK! I loved it! I loved the story! It had such a wonderful story of love. The message was so sweet and refreshing. The characters are very lovable. We start off with Crown, and you’re thinking this guy is a complete ass. But as you get to know him, you can’t help but adore him. Lyra is a sweet heart, you’ll fall in love with her from the start. I don’t want to spoil anything, so I’m not giving any details, but the love story of Crown and Lyra will just melt your heart. This book is hard to put down once you start it. Great!!!! I’d give this one a million stars if I could!

This was another great story from Lila and a different type of story as well. From the start of all of Lila's books I've fallen for the guy right away...total opposite for Crown. I was thinking what a self centered jerk!!! All things happen for a reason which is why he got hurt and met Lyra. He got to find himself...

If you love a good very realistic story this is a must read!

Another amazing story from Lila Felix.

This story is a little different from what we are used to from Ms. Felix. The main character is a bit arrogant and pompous and thinks the world revolves around him. But trust me you will fall in love with Crown Sterling!

The best thing about this book was that both main characters went through complete character development stages and really grew as a person by the end of the novel. Lyra was able to finally let go of the past (for the most part) and actually start living again without being in constant fear. And Crown was finally a decent human who was nice and didn't act like he was a god. I feel for both of the characters because they had a really bad past that molded them into the adults they were at the beginning of this novel.

But with the help of each other being in their lives and influencing one another, they were able to move past the crazy way they grew up and start living like normal people.

Overall I enjoyed this book, but I don't think I could re-read Crown's attitude again. It was a lot to handle during this novel.

I really wish I could give 1/2 stars. This one is a strong 3.5, in my mind.

Crown Sterling is the Kanye West of soccer, but I don't think even Kanye is as arrogant and self absorbed as Crown. No one is a better player than he, no woman can resist him, and nothing means more to him than the game. When Crown gets hurt in a game, he is sent to a small town in Louisiana to recover because that is all he can afford. He has an estranged uncle who has offered to let him stay for free in an apartment he owns. The only catch - he needs to keep an eye out for anyone who might bother his neighbor, and act as protection if she needs it.

Lyra Marchand lives next door to that apartment, and is not amused when her nice, quiet life is disrupted by a loud, obnoxious, Crown. To quote the book: "He was a giant douche canoe who was paddling his way upstream to asshatland." Lyra is a model by trade, but never - ever - shows her face. It's one of her 'rules'. Years ago, Lyra's privacy was violated and it has left her deeply scarred. All mirrors are covered in her apartment, she constantly sweeps for bugs, looks for cameras, etc. She eschews as much technology (including answering machines) as possible. It doesn't help that the man who made her this was is scheduled to be released from prison in a few weeks!

Slowly, they comes to terms and meet half-way on many things...but will it last?

After reading the first few pages from Crown's point of view, I was close to putting it down. I really thought about it. But, being ever then analyst, I figured there must be something coming that put him in his place to let him know that his crap stinks, too.

Is it bad of me for being a little relieved when he got hurt? I wouldn't call it 'happy', because no one should go through that kind of pain. However, the way he is treated by those in his day-to-day life breaks my heart a little. Watching his shell break was very heartwarming, and gave me hope.

I really felt for Lyra. I know someone in real life who experienced what she did, and I understand her routines. The way she handled Crown was nothing short of exactly what he needed and deserved.

I had a really hard time putting the book down once I got started. I even stayed up late to finish it (1am), despite the fact that I had to be up at 6am to get ready for work.

So, why only 3.5 stars? The end felt rushed. There was one major loose end that was not resolved, as well as several other minor plot lines which required resolution on the characters part but were glossed over and treated like they never happened. I'm sorry, but if there are multiple people embezzling from me - I'm going to hang them from a tree by their ankles and tickle them til they return it. (to put it nicely)

I received the book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This book was a difficult one for me to rate.

First it embodies so many of the tired, over-used YA/NA tropes. Crown Sterling (tick, stupid name) is a highly successful soccer player (tick, sports superstar), unfortunately he has bought into his own hype and only refers to himself in the third person, "Crown Sterling doesn't need to be polite to the little people" kind of thing. When he is badly injured he finds out that he is flat broke and needs to rely on the kindness of an estranged uncle in Louisiana who lets him stay rent-free in an apartment he owns while sterling goes through physiotherapy.

Lyra lives in the other half of the duplex. Her entire life is a series of OCD routines, she is scared of being watched and goes to obsessive lengths (even covering all the mirrors in the house) to ensure she isn't. She is a model but insists that her face isn't shown in any of the pictures. Finally, she is dreading the imminent release of a man from prison. As the book unfolds we learn why Lyra is so scared - although TBH with those facts I think we can all surmise fairly accurately what happened.

At the start of the book Crown was so annoying that I almost gave up reading - rest assured he does stop being such a gigantic ass pretty quickly, in fact almost too quickly. He goes from being an entitled ass to being a sensitive guy pretty fast.

Slowly Lyra and Crown begin to form a friendship as Crown realises his upbringing has been fairly blinkered and that the people he thought were his friends were nothing of the kind (and vice versa). Then Crown suggests that Lyra pretends to be his girlfriend. He will get publicity while he is injured, she will get publicity and hopefully more requests for modelling work - it's a win-win situation.

But Crown finds out why Lyra behaves the way she does, his injuries are healing - what happens when Crown goes back to soccer.

The underlying premise was good. Whilst the novel took up some of the aforementioned YA/NA tropes it went in different directions and I enjoyed that. The book was also set mainly in Louisiana rather than some glamorous city which made a nice change.

Things that didn't work so well. The writing was a bit florid, it made me feel that this was a first novel and Lila Felix wanted to impress with her big words and similes. I got the impression there was a whole other story (Lyra's family, her childhood, the man in jail) which was alluded to but never developed - I felt as though I had missed out on something. As I said, Crown's change of attitude seemed to happen very fast and there needed to be some lead up. Also, the end felt really rushed. I got to the epilogue and thought OMG there must be a cliff-hanger!

I truly enjoyed reading this, but I'm going to give you a little warning before I tell you why I enjoyed it.

Let me start of with this if you are a Lila Felix fan - this is not her typical book. It is not YA, it is NA, albeit a clean NA. It is not the same formula you might be use to, so read it with those things in mind. Do not go in expecting it to be Love and Skate - because it is not.

Now, here is why I enjoyed it. It is not YA, it is not the same formula you might be use to...get the picture? LOL

I enjoyed a break from the 'norm'. Yes, it is nice to escape into a fantasy romance world where love is all sweet and she is worried about him thinking she is good enough and him thinking she's too hot for him - but now and then it is nice to read something that doesn't fit that mold.

Crown Sterling is self-absorbed, bordering on being narcissistic, ass. He cares about two things in life himself and soccer. He has no time for relationships, he lives and breaths soccer and all that it means to be a pro soccer player and being center of attention.

Lyra is Crown's opposite. She has a troubled past; she has issues. She does not want attention, she does not seek out fame, all she wants is to live a quiet life hidden from the rest of the world.

They both have issues, but then, who doesn't? They are thrown into each other's lives and neither are happy about it. They have to learn to deal with each other - quirks and all.

This is the story of how they grow as individuals and come together as a couple. Will Crown be able to care for someone, other than himself? Will Lyra beat Crown with one of his weights? Who knows? It is life, it is a relationship in the works - and nothing says that a relationship is all about being happy all the time. Some relationships are about trust, and finding yourself wanting to be different because of someone else.

What I like about this book: I believe I established that I like it because it isn't Lila's normal style.

What I didn't like about this book: I have to be honest and say that the first few chapters were really hard for me. Not because of the writing as much as Crown was such an tool - I just did not like him, and if you know me, that means the author did a good job. Because if you can make me feel something, negative or positive, about a character's personality - you are writing it clear enough that I can perceive it.

Would I recommend this book: Yes - as long as you read it with the understanding that this isn't what you are use to, it is a NA not a YA.
