If you ever wanted to get to know Yeshua, the Jewish Messiah, the Good News of Matthew is the best place to start. Get to know Yeshua, the King, throught the writing of another rabbi, Barney Kasdan.
Barney Kasdan is leader of Kehilat Ariel, a thriving Messianic congregation located in San Diego. He holds degrees from Biola University (B.A.) and Talbot Theological Seminar (M.Div.). He also completed a year of post-graduate study at the University of Judaism in Los Angeles. Mr. Kasdan is the author if the popular book God’s Appointed Times.
A great overview of the Gospel of Matthew, addressing almost every verse (though it's divided into passages, not verse by verse). It puts Yeshua and the events of Matthew in a thoroughly Jewish context, so it's a valuable read for everyone who wants to better understand that.
The reason I gave it only four stars was for my level of enjoyment---I was already familiar with a lot of what Kasdan discussed, though I gleaned a few new exciting insights and it was handy to have this information all in one place. Also, a couple of things I had questions about in the Gospel weren't touched on. The book could have been better edited, and I'm not sure I agree with some of Kasdan's interpretations.
But I strongly applaud the author and publishers for putting out such an informative and well-organized volume. This has got to be one of the best commentaries on Matthew yet.
I found this to be an extremely helpful resource as I preached through the gospel of Matthew over a year and a half. Since Matthew's intended audience was 1st century Jewish converts, I needed help understanding the 1st century Jewish context! This commentary did that for me and more!
