I Hear Voices
After being laid off from her psychic gig, Zelda Dragos decides finding Montezuma’s lost treasure has to be easier than prying a check out of the state’s unemployment office. The fly in the ointment is the tenacious Derek Sloan, an Indiana Jones type, who wants the gold for himself.
The first clue in the treasure hunt is an Aztec amulet on display at the Phoenix Art Museum. All Zelda needs to do is “borrow” it for a bit. Unfortunately, Derek has the identical plan. With the help of a holographic diversion featuring the Rock as Montezuma, Zelda zaps him with a stun gun and walks off with the Amulet.
Zelda uses all of her tricks to discourage Derek’s relentless pursuit; a smoke bomb, mace, a hive of angry bees and getting him arrested. Out of options, Zelda finds herself stuck with a partner who thinks she needs a keeper and he’s just the man for the job.
To find the treasure all they have to deal with is an angry Apache Thunder God, Asmoday, the demon king of the Ninth Hell, eight thousand vengeful Aztec spirits and a mummified Aztec warrior. Adding to the mess is Zelda’s evil Aunt Sophie and Uncle Dante who wants the treasure for themselves. Dante’s lethal goons are hot on their trail. Derek and Zelda soon discover love blooms in the weirdest places.

This was a ★★★★1/2 read for me and I've rounded up.
I love how Gail incorporates her local knowledge of Arizona in this story, I felt like I was there, along with the heat and the flies :)
Our kicka$$ heroine Zelda Dragos (love the name) is an unemployed psychic and demon slayer and finding it tough to make a buck in this economic climate, when she chances on a story of Montezuma's gold and just knows it is hers.
The only drawback is the hero, Derek Sloan, ex-Navy Seal Commander and CIA operative. He found the link to the treasure and wasn't happy when the Mexican government appropriated the medallion. Our intrepid adventurers meet at the Museum, both intent on stealing the medallion.
Both have coooooll electronic toys, crazy relatives, lots of secret contacts, lots of stamina, plus Zelda has her ghostly Grandma to assist her.
This story has everything. Kidnapping, repeatedly, an Apache warrior, Aztec myths coming to life, Godiva chocolate, James Bond style action, laughs aplenty, Lear Jet, more chocolate, bikers, helicopter crash, Excalibur and Knights, Hummers flipping, and a heroine who laughs at handcuffs and seriously crazy relatives.
Gail is an autobuy for me, as all her stories are exciting, HEA, very funny, kicka$$ heroines, alpha males who underestimate the good gal at the beginning but love how strong their mates really are, by the end.
I'd love a sequel, Gail, you listening?
Now we just have to wait for Vexing Voss, #3 in the Coletti Warlords series.

sometimes when you read a lot of paranormal romance it can seem like there is nothing more out there that you have not already seen. i can honestly say that Gail koger is that something new. this is the fourth book that i have read from this author and it was as different as night and day from her Colletti Warrior series,which i adore. i loved this book, with the difference between the military trained hero and the criminally trained heroine. the undercurrents that ran thru the "family" and the hilarious commentary betwen Zelda and the other "characters",had me laughing out loud, a lot! this would not have turned out well if the Hero(a treasure hunter/military man) was not such a wonderful and stubborn ,"Pain in the butt! As Zelda would say", in love when it came to his heroine.
But then Granny told her he was"!@# (*#". LOL!(thought i was going to give something away didn't you?)
if you like: 1) paranormal books, with the most hilarious sense of humor running through them. 2)the against all odds romance that just might contian chocolate. then grab this book and dig in for the duration. go ahead and hibernate with it for awhile, i can guarantee once you start reading you won't want to put it down any more than a chocoholic would give up his/her Godiva. LOL!

Alpha male plus trouble magnet female is Ms. Koger's trademark. One would think that after reading every book similar to this premise, I'd be tired of it. One would be wrong. I really enjoy it and this gift from Ms. Koger is a delightful 3.5 star book.
Zelda is a ghostbusting psychic with an interesting family curse. It's one of the reasons why she is still a virgin at her ripe age. She's currently unemployed and desperately fending off her crazy Aunt Sophie who is mixed up with the dark arts. Bonding with demons is definitely off Zelda's list of things to do. With her need for cash, she determines to find her payload through gold. Specifically, a treasure hidden by the Aztecs centuries ago is the answer to her prayers. Unfortunately, Derek Sloan is in her way. Derek wants the treasure and he will do anything to find it.
Derek is some sort of CIA operative with unlimited budget to chase after Zelda yet not enough money to go after and save his friend. Derek is an alpha male who is constantly undermined by slippery Zelda. Zelda's shenanigans are unbelievable at times.
This story is action packed. The world building is a bit rough. There are holes here and there which leads a reader to believe there was either a story before this one or this is supposed to be the beginning of a series. Hopefully there is a 0.5 prequel detailing the Dragos family. A follow up to this story with Derek and Zelda saving Derek's friend would also be great.
There are some plot holes in this story which make it a hard read for those who like to have logic in their story. While I prefer to have a smooth read with solid world building and good character building, Ms. Koger's writing voice overcomes these requirements. Her first person writing as the wacky Zelda is just hilarious. It never fails to bring a smile to my face. I tend to chortle throughout the book which is why I never drink anything while reading Ms. Koger's books. I don't want to do a spit take.
Ms. Koger's forte is character dialog. It's witty and the timing is perfect. Her sense of humour is also the type I like which makes her books appealing to me. For example, the lead female is always poking at the alpha male. Truly, these males have the patience of a saint. I'd have spanked these unruly female's ass fiery red multiple times a day. Here's a snippet which sums up Zelda and Derek's relationship. In this little scene, Zelda buys shirts for Derek to wear.
He [Derek] yanked out a neon yellow shirt with ‘I Don’t Have A License To Kill, I Have A Learner’s Permit’ stamped on the front.
“Are you deliberately trying to piss me off?” (pg. 135)
The answer is YES! Zelda is trying to drive Derek crazy and piss him off.
My recommendation for Ms. Koger is to work on her world building. I provided one example above which didn't make sense to me. Another one is why Zelda doesn't just go to her other Uncle and work with him. It's never clear to me why the only choice is for her to become a treasure hunter. This plot device feels forced even if it is required to make the plot work. From a character perspective, I love her characters. They are flawed and they try so hard to overcome them. The drawback of her characters is that they all have the save voice. Every male in each book is the same. It happens to be a type of male I like so it's fine for me. All her female leads also sound the same and behave in similar manners despite the differences in occupation. Since I like the females, it is also fine for me. From a writing perspective, the ability to create different female and male characters will be a good growth progression for Ms. Koger. Because this will allow her writing to appeal to a larger audience.
Still, this book is a hoot to read from beginning to end. I buckled my seat belt and enjoyed the wild ride. Recommended for paranormal romance lovers who love exasperated alpha males and quirky female leads.

Wow! This is one of the best books I have ever read! If you liked Vexing Voss, you will LOVE this! The dialogue between Zelda and Derek was smokin' hot! Be prepared and have a fan handy when you read this.
*****spoilers***** Zelda is a psychic and is searching for Montezuma's lost treasure. Derek is also searching for the treasure and Zelda is determined to find it first. Initially, she must steal a medallion from a museum, a medallion that Derek found and considers his. Derek realizes she is after his medallion when he comes upon her just outside his hotel room. (She had been planting evidence to get him arrested.) And thus the chase began - and what a chase! Zelda has many tricks up her sleeve and they are just hilarious. The bantering between the two never eases up and will leave you breathless.
Small example:
Zelda uses her stun gun on Derek and later she refers to this while threatening him. She says, "Stay the hell away from me or I'll do more than stun you."
"You try that little stunt again and I'll put you over my knee."
"The big, scary CIA agent is gonna to spank me. Gosh, I'm trembling in my boots."
That kind of bantering continues throughout the book. It was hugely entertaining and all the while the story itself, romance aside, is engrossing and humorous. I laughed out loud multiple times. As soon as it becomes available to purchase again, I advise you to buy it. Trust me. If you like the Coletti Warrior books you will love it and if you have never read a book by Gail, you are in for a treat.

Great story, action, humor, ghosts, demons, crazy families, oh my. I love how this author has kick a$$ female characters,and strong (need to learn a little lesson males) underestimating her at every turn, took him a while to figure out she had some awesome skills. Enjoyed the world development and the types of skills the different characters had. This is an action packed with great humor, interesting characters and a nice touch of myths in the story book. Romance was slow to develop, wasn't sure how he really felt about her until much later in the story. Then things do heat up.
Hope this is the start of a new series, would love to hear more about the cousins.

Gail Koger is an author that I'm going to put on my watch list to read more of her books. She has a wonderful refreshing voice that will only be refined with time.
I loved that this was a fun book with a sassy heroine and alpha hero in a paranormal setting. There was only one area that needs a lot of improvement.
But Gail Koger comes *highly* recommended by a few of my friends so I will read more books by author.

Receiving a ARC I jumped into reading this long awaited release from one of my favorite authors Gail Koger. The teasers had me hoping the final product would live up to my expectations and anticipation.
This is a contemporary paranormal read featuring Zelda Dragos, a psychic with a MacGyver mentality, who has struggled to distance herself from the shadow of the legendary Dragos family name. With the recent economic atmosphere and lack of psychic employment opportunities she plans to find 'Montezuma's Gold' and live independently wealthy for the rest of her life. Unfortunately the brash and often obnoxious Derek Sloan is also on the hunt for the gold and is standing between her and an important artefact she needs to find the actual location of the gold. Zelda sets out to teach him a lesson or two regarding the consequences of standing between a girl and her chocolate, or in this case a girl and her gold. And she'll enlist the aid of her kooky but loving family to make sure it's a lesson he never forgets.
One thing I can always rely on when I read a book by this author is a humorous read with a strong female lead character who takes on a alpha male character and brings him to his knees. The battle between Zelda and Derek is fast paced, unpredictable, and full of snarky dialogue. The sex scenes, while hot, don't overpower a story that has more twists and turns to it than a curlicue. The many cliches do get to be a little much but are consistent with the way the author developed the characters. There are so many parts of this book that I would like to comment on but with the many surprise plot twists they would potentially be spoilers and I don't do spoilers so I will simply say this author gives a whole new meaning to death by chocolate.
My one issue was that I wish the author would have put in some sort of separate reference page that explained in plain English some of the chanting and spell weaving used in the book. Being able to translate the terms would have been something I would have enjoyed to have seen.

The one thing I can honestly say about Gail Koger is that she never fails to deliver a fast paced, quirky and entertaining story. I was one of the few that was able to read an early copy of the book and since I have received it I have read it three times to make sure I could give an honest review. I have read all of her previous books and while they all feature alpha males brought down a peg or two ( or maybe 3) by a sarcastic, witty and kicka$$ female. Each one of those stories is different and unique that keeps me coming back for more and this one was no different.
Without giving too much away Zelda Dragos is a unemployed psychic with $20 left to her name trying to fly under the radar to keep out of her psychotic Aunt and Uncle's reach. He solution is to use her psychic gifts (and a few other tricks) to find Montezuma's Gold and live off that for the rest of her life. Unfortunately she is not the only one on the hunt for the treasure...enter Derek Sloan. Throw in a ghost, thunder god, commando's, car chases and a few non-psychotic but, still crazy relatives and you have a hilarious romantic contemporary paranormal book that will not leave you disappointed.
While the romance was slow to build in this book the storyline is action packed and very fast moving. I made the mistake of trying to read some of it during my lunch break and before I knew it I was a half hour late and was debating cutting out early to go home to finish the book :) I would recommend this book to anyone as well as her previous books, especially "Just My Luck" which is my overall favorite and "The Nasty Vamp" coming in as a close second. So read it and I hope everyone enjoy's it as much as I did! Now the wait begins for "Vexing Voss" :)

I really enjoy Gail Koger's humor and this book does not disappoint.
I received a copy of this book from the author via my reading group and was happy to check it out.
The adventure, romance, and humour are all very engaging. I enjoyed the quirky world building.
I found it a little disconcerting how Zelda went from hating Derek to being wild about him in the blink of an eye and the sentence structure in the first 1/4 of the book felt choppy. Other than that, it was a fast moving and fun adventure.

I really loved this book. It was so funny in parts, the heroine was in trouble so much she needed help on a big scale and got it in her own mate as well as her zany family. Would really love it you could write a another story about Fabian. I found him quite loveable too. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes to laugh while reading a good story.

At first I wasn't happy with this book? Why? Because it wasn't a Coletti book. But [no surprise here] the author won me over. This is a paranormal edging into fantasy and a great read. The heroine is a Dragos - a powerful family of psychics. Some of them are thieves, some of them are demon fighters and some of them are wannabe demons... [Family reunions must be fun.]
Zelda just wants to be left alone and to have to stop hiding from creditors. To that end she decides to find Montezuma's gold which is supposed to be hidden outside of Kanab, Utah. [For anyone who has never been there - her setting is dead on. I loved it!] The drawback here is the hero, Derek, who has similar plans. And he has no intention of letting it be stolen out from under him. Though once he sees Zelda he certainly does have intentions...
The story manages to mix Zelda and Derek - an Indiana Jones type archaeologist with CIA connections - with magic, Asmoday, portals to hell, Zelda's aunt-from-hell [literally], motorcycle gangs, and a plane crash successfully. Oh, wait, I forgot to mention the Apache Thunder God and his serial-murdering-henchman... And Excalibur, you can't leave out Excalibur!
It's definitely a thrill ride. [For those old enough to remember - it's an E-ticket ride all the way!]

The story manages to mix Zelda and Derek - an Indiana Jones type archaeologist with CIA connections - with magic, Asmoday, portals to hell, Zelda's aunt-from-hell [literally], motorcycle gangs, and a plane crash successfully. Oh, wait, I forgot to mention the Apache Thunder God and his serial-murdering-henchman... And Excalibur, you can't leave out Excalibur!
It's definitely a thrill ride. [For those old enough to remember - it's an E-ticket ride all the way!]

The blurb is the only part of this book that is coherent and well-written. The book is a mess in terms of pacing, world building, and character development. As a reader, you are plunged into one action scene after another with no rhyme or reason. There's a teeny tiny hint of a plot but it's covered up in lots of crazy stunts and antics. It was so confusing. Imo, Gail Koger's Coletti Warlords series is WAY better developed and written than this one.

After being laid off from her psychic gig, Zelda Dragos decides finding Montezuma’s lost treasure has to be easier than prying a check out of the state’s unemployment office. The fly in the ointment is the tenacious Derek Sloan, an Indiana Jones type, who wants the gold for himself.
The first clue in the treasure hunt is an Aztec amulet on display at the Phoenix Art Museum. All Zelda needs to do is “borrow” it for a bit. Unfortunately, Derek has the identical plan. With the help of a holographic diversion featuring the Rock as Montezuma, Zelda zaps him with a stun gun and walks off with the Amulet.
Zelda uses all of her tricks to discourage Derek’s relentless pursuit; a smoke bomb, mace, a hive of angry bees and getting him arrested. Out of options, Zelda finds herself stuck with a partner who thinks she needs a keeper and he’s just the man for the job.
To find the treasure all they have to deal with is an angry Apache Thunder God, Asmoday, the demon king of the Ninth Hell, eight thousand vengeful Aztec spirits and a mummified Aztec warrior. Adding to the mess is Zelda’s evil Aunt Sophie and Uncle Dante who wants the treasure for themselves. Dante’s lethal goons are hot on their trail. Derek and Zelda soon discover love blooms in the weirdest places.

Also there are lots of laughter that would be coming from yourself, so be warned!!

now zelda has a bounty on her head from her aunt, who really needs to sacrifice zelda to sophie's ruler asmoday, or else sophie dies.
woman in zelda's family r cursed. when they have sex with someone and their virginity is gone, they are bond to whoever they gave it to.

From the very hilarious first line, I couldn’t stop laughing.
I hear voices and see dead people. No, I’m not nuts. I’m psychic.
Zelda Dragos needs money and to be far away from her Aunt Sophie, who sold her soul to a demon, so when she sees an article in a magazine about Montezuma’s gold, she decides she'll be the one who’ll find it. However, she's not the only one who's after the gold, Derek Sloan aka Tomb Raider wants it too.
After robbing an artifact that could help her find the gold, Derek calls her.
“First thing I want to do to you, Angel, is strip you bare. Then I’m gonna spread your hot, naked body across my bed like a banquet and eat you until you scream.” Shaking off the urge to yell, ‘take me I’m yours’, I snorted rudely instead. “Nice try asshole.”
Her dead grandmother, who had refused to pass over until she accepts her destiny and finds a strong man to protect her, helps her too; although she thinks Zelda's finally found her match in Derek Sloan and tries to convince her to surrender to the man.
While she is searching for another clue, she faces a possessed Apache warrior and soon after a demon, so she finally accepts the help of Derek… temporarily, of course. After that she runs again. Here's the summary of the first part of her adventure and injuries.
“Did I get my brains scrambled when the helicopter crashed and burned real pretty? Or did it happen when I crashed Derek’s Hummer and the airbags deployed too late?
Or maybe it was when Peg Leg smacked me in the face? Or could it have been when I was kidnapped by a maniac on a motorcycle that dangled me over his lap like a sack of potatoes?”
Oh, and the maniac is Derek’s cousin, Dixon. He wants her to find the gold because her Aunt Sophie had set a price for her head.
Zelda escapes, but Dixon gets her again and locks her in his private plane and they take of; she finally escapes.
“You’re fucking nuts.”
I shrugged. “Some people think I am. Can’t imagine where they get that idea from. Oh, by the way, I need to borrow your airplane for a bit.” Alarm flared in his eyes. “Have you ever flown a Bombardier Learjet 45 before?”
“Nope but how hard can it be?” At his horrified expression, I hurriedly shut and locked the cockpit door.
Like I said, I kept laughing until the end. Zelda is a trouble magnet. There is always someone trying to kill her. She's a strong and independent woman who doesn’t want a man in her life, but she needs one to protect her. I really love this character, along with the Derek Sloan aka Tomb Raider. Strong, decisive, he's the perfect match for Zelda. And he is also romantic, buying her a bullet-proof vest and chocolate; and tells her this:
“Things that go bump in the night don’t scare me.” Derek gave me a long, tender kiss. “But if I lost you, I would lose the other half of my soul.”
Gail Koger created something wonderful and special, all the while keeping her marvelous humor that I love. It converted me into an addict, and I’m sure that many of you are feeling the same. 5 stars, this novel deserves this and more.

Finding the treasure is not so easy, however, because she has to deal with the annoyance of Derek, a pissed off Apache Thunder god, a demon king, not to mention her family—all with their own designs for her. If she gives in and accepts, though, Derek can help.
Derek Sloan, a “tomb raider” type, has questionable motives and a love for loud Hawaiian shirts. Zelda is not his normal type, but there is something about her that makes him decide she is his, along with the treasure. So he will do what he needs to, even deal with her over a stun gun, her penchant for escaping from him and the things after her.
Following the trail to the gold will take them through at least three states, which involves more than just figuring out clues. They will have to avoid a virgin sacrifice, really angry spirits and demons and interferences from her family. Working together would get them both their goals, with his brawn and sources for information, and her “woo-woo” abilities to find the gold and to avoid psychic obstacles in the way.

This was an excellent read. Fresh story line, fast-moving, absolutely great sex scenes . I loved the interaction between Zelda and Derek, it's full of tongue in cheek humor, and passion...And like her previous books, the supporting characters are just as entertaining and wonderful as the H/H. Gail, I loved the clever storyline, witty banter that had me baying like an donkey. Honestly Gail, I am so pleased that every novel you have out, has never disappointed your reader. I read a lot of romance, and let me tell you each book of yours is 5 star. The plot and characters are fleshed out. Your scenes descriptiveness have me right there in the moment! I must admit to being selfish, because at the end of every book, I can't help but think...couldn't she have added 100 extra pages?

You can always count on Mrs. Koger's books to be 'rolling on the floor' funny. Zelda is a very smart-mouth, independant lady which tends to tick off evrybody she comes in contact with. So when she dicides to find Montezuma's lost gold, she has to step on some toes, mostly Derek Sloans. Mmmmmm, Derek. Besides his tendency to wear bright, Hawaiian type shirts, Mrs. Koger did a great job making this character and describing him. I have never drooled over a fictional character before but hey, there's always a Derek Sloan. The characters are hilarious and the entire story is action-packed and fast-paced. Zelda and Derek's characters go together so well even when they are butting heads (which is almost all the time). Throw in some crazy family members, a biker gang, demons, spirits, and Granny Annabel and you will definitely become a fan of Mrs. Koger.

Gail Koger did it again! Another great book....her characters are fun, witty, and just plain enjoyable. I read this book in less than 24 hours and I did not want it to end. The heroine loses her job and decides to change "careers" and enter into treasure hunting. The hero is so alpha and a treasure hunter who is also searching for the exact same treasure as our heroine. Sparks fly between our alpha hero and independent heroine. This is a contemporary paranormal romantic story that I highly recommend!

What a fun read! Action from page one and never lets up. Most of the action is so out there and over the top ~ but is was so freaking funny. The book was fantastic my only complaint is the ending was very abrupt. I even thought my kindle skipped a page or two, but no it just ended that way. This would make such a great series I would so love to read more about this couple and her family. Love the sense of humor, it had you smiling and laughing the whole time! It did remind me of G.A. Aikens work with the attitudes of the H/h & snarky dialogue.

Zelda & Derek (Indiana Jones in horribly loud Hawaiian shirts) try to find the lost gold of Montezuma. First at odds with each other, and then together. He's the weapons/fighting expert, she's able do battle with evil forces. And with the help of her otherworldly multi-tool, aka her grandma, they can fight through anything.
Smut light, but a ton of crazy action.

(One of my favorites scenes contains a whole new meaning to the phrase "Death by Chocolate!".) When I read Gail Koger, I expect a fast pace, constant danger, hilarity, dirty talking uber alpha male, snarky problem with authority female, etc. This book more than delivered, and caused me to laugh out loud several times. Suspension of disbelief is key when reading Ms Koger, however if you can do it, you are in for a very fun ride.

This was just what I needed after listening/reading a couple of very “heavy” books…while I won’t say this is “light and fluffy” it was a very fun read full of action and laughter. If you liked Just My Luck you will enjoy I Hear Voices.

I have not laughed this much in a very long time. I loved this book. A BBW heroine with psychic gifts and an alpha male hero who never gives up. Snark galore, and a treasure hunt filled with perils from hell. Great fun!
