My fantasy fiction book Blood & Soul stayed in Amazon's top 100 for it's genre almost 6 months. I'm still stunned. I worked on crafting the best book I could write. I studied many of the gurus on novel structure and story telling. My book garnered 20 or so 5 and 4 star ratings on Goodreads and Amazon.

I also made the agonizing decision to go the independent route, that is self-publish. Publishers weren't gonna make any room for me next to George R. R. Martin. So I took a leap of faith. But I knew I had to set myself a part due the well-earned reputation that self-published authors SUCK! I agree wholeheartedly. I've only managed to make it through 1, maybe 2, self-published books.

When my editor was almost done with the final draft, I started reading Kindle Publishing Made (Stupidly) Easy. I couldn't fully implement everything since I my goal was to publish before my 50th birthday. So the night before my birthday everything I could do in the time frame was done. I uploaded the final draft to Amazon and went to bed. The next day my book shot to #1 on Amazon. Me. Totally unknown. Next to George R. R. Martin's Dance with Dragons and Star Wars.

That initial boost was due to many factors. One crucial factor was implementing Michael Rogan's instructions in this book.

This is the second book I have recently read and reviewed by this author. Although the casual style might put some of you off the information contained is valuable and collated through a number of years of experience in the field of publishing e-books.

This is a short book each page is filled with actionable content. There is no padding and no soft edges.

There are many books on Amazon in similar style but actually avoid any useful information this book is not one of them

I've never read a book that had so much valuable information packed into one place! I chose submersion reading, listening to it on Audible and reading it through Kindle at the same time, which was great! But then I decided I would also like to have it in paperback because there's so much reference material in here!

For beginning self-publishers, this title is a natural choice. The author delivers useful tips about advance work to develop a marketing base, and the final publication-and-promotion push. That alone makes it worth the low price.

But reading this is a bit like watching a magician reveal his tricks. Rogan says the real secret to success at Kindle publishing is to publish lots of other short “books by the this author” or Amazon-suggested related books — in other words, to use your books to promote your other books. This he does amply, directing readers to his own web resources and to tools and services he has used and recommends. If he has cross-promotional agreements with any of them, he does not mention them.

The useful tips, mostly from two chapters on building and using a promotional network, could be reduced to about five pages of tip sheets for beginners — but then he wouldn’t have a book to sell the other books.

You can’t fault an author for practicing what he preaches — except when he doesn’t. Chapter 2 offers “Million-Dollar Makeover Tip No.1[sic]: Get a Pro Copy Editor (You Don’t Count).” There’s irony in his boldface tip “And nothing will get you crappy reviews on Amazon quicker — we’ll go over reviews later — then [sic] misspellings, comma splices, split infinitives, and all the other common text mistakes that self-publishing rookies and veterans alike make.”

Copy editing software, even the ones Rogan recommends, won't catch all the errors, and skilled copy editors can be expensive and hard to find. The careful writer will be grateful for the advice but wish the author had followed it himself to make his product more professional.

As a first time author, this book has been my publishing Bible. It's easy to understand, easy to follow, and has been extremely helpful. There are a few details I wished he had included, but if he did, that may have taken away from the clear cut straightforwardness of the book. Either way, I'm so glad I got this book. The information has proven to be extremely valuable. I wouldn't have gotten this far without it. I recommend it to all my author friends or anyone aspiring to be an author! Thanks for being awesome Michael!

I found Michael's book very helpful. There are a lot of books in the area (I have read quite a lot of them) and Michael's book stacks up very well in a head-to-head comparison. I found his advice immediately actionable.
