Picked up this novel to practice Japanese reading.
The novel follows an episodic format, with each chapter describing a separate comedic snippet in the character's lives. The cast is super cute, with quirky, slightly over the top personalities that create fun, interesting scenarios when they clash with each other. There's no much drama or action to see, simply the mundane events of the character's lives.
In the afterword the author explains how, whenever he watched plot-heavy anime shows like Macross, he'd always be more invested in the beginning episodes when the focus is more on the character's lighthearted day-to-day lives and the way they get by in their fantasy/scifi setting... up until completely losing interest once the plot kicks in and it's just non-stop action and drama. That's why he decided to write a story like this. If you, like me, resonate with his feelings, then you may enjoy this novel as well.
Beyond that, I would also strongly recommend it to anyone trying to get some reading practice, but is too intimidated by long-form, narrative focused novels. For that purpose, its very short chapters (always 4 pages long) along with the lighthearted, yonkoma-like storytelling structure worked wonders for smooth comprehension. The vocabulary is relatively simple even for a beginner, and the episodic, self-contained chapters helped avoid losing track of what was happening.
It's a decent enough book to read if you're hoping to increase your Japanese vocabulary and knowledge of literary Japanese grammar, in large part due to the one story per four page structure. But the stories are boring and the characters are as one dimensional as a straight line.
GJ-bu is a short fun read. This light novel is what the author calls a 4-koma novel. Each chapter is exactly 4 pages. With most of them not being connected at all.
The story is about the club, GJ, and the daily lives of the 5 members. Each of the member has their own interesting quirk. The stories themselves aren't complicated and are usually about mundane things. One such story was about one of the characters trying to make instant Ramen.
All of the characters are charming and the overall atmosphere of the book is just a nice relaxing mood.
